Prophet Yusuf - Part 2 - The Dream Comes True This story has been taken from Tafsir Ibn Kathir Â
and has been reviewed for authenticity by Luqmayâs Shariah Advisory Board.
The prison cell was dark and musty. Yusuf was here because he had refused Â
to obey the Ministerâs wife. She had wanted him to be Â
unfaithful to the minister and to Allah. Two other men also entered the prison with him.Â
One of them was the cupbearer responsible for the Kingâs drinks Â
and the other one was the royal baker. The two men had had strange dreams.Â
âCan you please tell us what these dreams mean?â they asked Yusuf.Â
Yusuf knew the meaning of dreams because Allah had given him that special knowledge.Â
He understood that one of them was in GRAVE danger.Â
But before telling them about the dreams he told them about Allah.Â
âIt is Allah, my Lord, who taught me how to interpret dreams.âÂ
âMy fellow-prisoners! Which is better:Â Â
many different lords or Allahâthe One, the Supreme?â He asked them Â
and invited them to worship Allah alone. â One of you will present the king with Â
wine to drink. As for the other... he will be killed.â Yusuf told them.Â
âOh!â âhmmmm...âÂ
âTell your king about me when you get freed,â Yusuf said to the cupbearer.Â
Soon, the two men went to court. Just as Yusuf had said, one of them was killed in punishment Â
and the other went back to serve the king. Hum! Hum! Hum!Â
Hey! Donât stand there watching. Get going with your work.Â
Ah! Time for the Kingâs morning drink.
The cupbearer met the King everyday. He had the chance to tell the Â
King about noble Yusuf. But Shaitan made him forget.Â
Days turned into months and months turned into years.Â
And Yusuf stayed in prison... His family didnât even know where he was, Â
who could help him now?Â
But Yusuf knew Allah was with him and he kept praying to Allah without losing hope.
Ladies and gentlemen, please behold! His majesty, the King of Egypt!
My dear princes, respectable priests Â
and honorable chiefs. I have gathered you here for an important matter.
Today, I had a strange dream. I saw seven fat cows and seven thin cows. And the thin Â
cows ate the fat cows. And I saw seven green stalks of grain and seven dry ones.Â
I am completely baffled by this dream. Do any of you know how to interpret dreams?
The king is out of his mind! What nonsense! Â
Cows and grains! I always said he was unfit to be the king.Â
âPlease accept our apologies, my majesty. These seem like mixed up dreams. We do not know the Â
meaning of such dreams Iâm afraid.â Hmmmm...Â
The king was disappointed. He knew in his heart that Â
this dream was a different one. But alas! There was nobody who could Â
tell him what it meant.
âI remember! I know just the person! Just let me go and visit Yusuf in the prisons, Your majesty.Â
Heâll know what your dream means.â
Yusuf! You truthful man! So good to see you! Iâm here about the Kingâs dream actually.Â
The King saw seven fat cows being eaten by seven thin cows and seven green stalks Â
of grain and seven dry ones. Please tell me what this means Â
so I can go and inform him. What a strange dream it was!Â
But Allah had given Yusuf special knowledge and Yusuf immediately knew what it meant.Â
âFor seven years there will be great harvest, rain and lots of food but then for seven years Â
there will be a famine, you will not have rain or any harvest.â said YusufÂ
The cupbearer hurried to the king and told him what Yusuf had said.Â
The king was impressed. Go and bring this man to me!Â
His Majesty the king wants you to come and meet him.Â
What an honour! Heâs going to be free at last.Â
This man deserves it! But Yusuf replied, Â
âGo back to your King and ask him about the case of the woman.âÂ
âYour Majesty! Very strange man, that Yusuf! He has refused to come! He wants you to investigate Â
the matter of the woman who sent him to prison. Hmmm..very well, very well.
Out with the truth ladies, what was this matter with Yusuf?Â
What did he do? He is innocent, your Majesty!Â
He didnât do anything.
I must confess.I am the one to blame. I wanted him to be disloyal Â
to the minister, but he was not. That settles the matter! Go and bring Yusuf Â
to me. And tell him he is clear of all charges! Iâll appoint him as my close advisor.
After living many years in the cold and damp dungeons, Â
finally, Yusuf was able to breath in the fresh air and enjoy the sunâs light.
When the king talked to Yusuf, he was even more impressed, because Yusuf was extremely wise Â
and knowledgeable. From now on Yusuf Â
has my complete trust and favour. Yusuf asked the King to appoint Â
him as the treasurer so he could manage the store houses and the grain properly.Â
The king agreed. And so, Yusuf ended up Â
becoming a high ranked minister in Egypt. But what of his family?Â
Was his father alive? Would he ever see them again?
The seven good years passed by. Yusuf looked over the crops and made sure they Â
were distributed properly so they could last in the next seven years of drought.Â
Then came the seven difficult years.Â
The drought affected Egypt and all the surrounding lands.Â
Yaqub and his sons lived in nearby Kanâaan and they too had no food now.Â
They heard about the righteous treasurer of Egypt who was giving away grain for a low price.Â
The brothers took some money from their land and left for Egypt to buy grain.Â
But Yaqub kept Bin Yameen, the youngest brother, with him because Bin Yameen reminded him of Yusuf.
When the brothers came to Yusuf he recognized them at once.Â
But his brothers had no idea who he was! Yusuf gave them their supplies and asked them Â
to bring their youngest brother next time. âDonât you see Iâm the best of hosts? Â
If you donât bring him next time, IÂ will have no grain for you.â said YusufÂ
âWeâll try to convince his father to let him come. Weâll try our best.â the brothers replied.Â
Yusuf told his servant to secretly put their money back in their bags.Â
He feared they had no more money to bring back a second time.Â
âDad! The minister has refused to give us more grain if we donât take Bin Yameen with us. Â
Do send him next time. Weâll take care of him.â the brothers said to their father.Â
Should I trust you like I did with Yusuf before?â said Yaqub.Â
Then the brothers unpacked their bags and found their money in it.Â
âDad! What else could we ask for! The minister gave us back our money!â they saidÂ
âNow we can buy more food for our family. Weâll Â
watch over our brother and get an extra camel-load of grain.âÂ
âI will never send him with you, not until you swear by Allah that you will Â
bring him back to me â said Yaqub The brothers gave their promise and Â
were soon back in Egypt along with Bin Yameen. Yusuf was pleased to see his brother Bin Yameen.Â
âI am your brother, Yusuf.â he told him, âDonât be sad because of what theyâve been doing!âÂ
Yusuf wanted to keep his brother in Egypt with him.Â
But how could he do that?Â
Yusuf thought of a plan and slipped the cup into Bin Yameenâs bag.
Hey you! Youâre thieves! âWhat have you lost?â asked the brothersÂ
âThe kingâs precious cup! Itâs missing! âWe didnât come here to make trouble.â Â
replied the brothers. âWeâre no thieves!âÂ
âWhat if youâre lying? What punishment should we give you?âÂ
âWhoever has the cup in his bag, you can take him as a slave. Thatâs how we punish Â
the wrong doers in our land.â said the brothers Fine then! Our minister will inspect your bags.Â
Yusuf searched their bags, and the cup was found in Bin Yameenâs bag.Â
âNo surprise heâs a thief! His brother Yusuf was a thief too.â said the brothersÂ
Yusuf knew they were lying. But he kept quiet. âKind Minister! Please take one of us in Â
his place.â The brothers requested Yusuf. They were thinking about their promise to Yaqub Â
about bringing Bin Yameen back safely. But Yusuf refused.
âDad! Your son has stolen! You can ask the people of the caravan Â
and even the people of that city! We are telling the truth.Â
Your souls have made you do an evil act. But Iâll be patient. Â
Allah will bring them back to me.â said Yaqub. Yaqub missed Yousuf and Bin Yameen a lot. He Â
would cry so much for them that he became blind. âYouâre going to ruin your health or even die Â
if you keep thinking of Yusuf like this!â the brothers said to Yaqub.Â
I only complain of my sorrow to Allah. I know something from Allah that you donât.â he replied.Â
âMy sons! go and look for Yusuf and his brother. Donât lose hope in Allah.âÂ
âMinister! Our family is going through a rough time. Â
We have brought very little money, but please give us more grain.â the brothers requested Yusuf.Â
âDo you know what you did to Yusuf and his brother in your ignorance?â said YusufÂ
âAre you Yusuf?!â they exclaimed âYes. I am Yusuf, and this is my brother. Â
Allah has been very kind to us.â said Yusuf The brothers admitted they had been wrong.Â
Yusuf had power and he could punish them in any way he wanted.Â
But YusufâŠ.forgave them. âMay Allah forgive you.â he said. âTake this Â
shirt of mine and put it over dadâs face. He'll get his eyesight back. Â
Then bring your whole family to me.â âYou may think itâs because of old age, Â
but I can actually smell Yusuf!â said Yaqub. Youâre just lost in that old error of yours!âÂ
The brothers came back to their father with the good news and put Yusufâs shirt on his face.Â
âDidnât I tell you I knew something from Allah that you didnât know!â said Yaqub.Â
Welcome to Egypt,â said Yusuf to his family. He brought his parents to the throne Â
and they all prostrated to him. âDad! This is the explanation of the dream that Â
I had! Allah has made it a reality.â said Yusuf. He then thanked Allah and made dua to him.
