Q & A

  • What is the primary purpose of stimulation therapy for hair loss?

-The primary purpose of stimulation therapy for hair loss is to stimulate the hair growth without addressing the underlying cause of hair loss, such as in male pattern baldness or androgenetic alopecia.

  • What was the original purpose of Minoxidil before it was used for hair loss treatment?

-Minoxidil was originally designed as a tablet to treat high blood pressure, and its use for hair loss was discovered due to an unexpected side effect of increased hair growth in users.

  • Who were the initial researchers involved in the trials for topical Minoxidil in Australia?

-Dr. Vicam Jash was one of the five doctors in Australia who were involved in the original research using Minoxidil as a lotion for balding scalps.

  • How does Minoxidil affect the hair growth cycle?

-Minoxidil affects the hair growth cycle by elongating the anagen phase, which results in a decrease in shedding rate and more hairs growing at any one time.

  • Why might some people experience an initial increase in hair shedding when they start using Minoxidil?

-The initial increase in hair shedding is due to the new hair growth pushing out the old hair as the treatment stimulates a new growth cycle, which is a temporary phase.

  • What is the general time frame for noticing the effects of Minoxidil on hair growth?

-The effects of Minoxidil are typically noticeable after 4 to 6 months of consistent use, with improvements in hair quality and volume.

  • What is the recommended frequency of applying Minoxidil according to the script?

-The script suggests that once a day is a reasonable frequency of use for Minoxidil, as it has an effect that lasts in the skin for about 21 hours.

  • Why might the 5% Minoxidil solution be preferred over higher concentrations like 7% or 10%?

-The 5% Minoxidil solution is preferred because it provides a noticeable improvement in hair quality, and going to higher concentrations does not significantly increase the response due to the flat dose-response curve of the medication.

  • What are the two forms in which Minoxidil is available for topical application?

-Minoxidil is available in two forms for topical application: a liquid solution and a foam.

  • What is the role of Minoxidil in the treatment of hair loss according to the doctors in the script?

-According to the doctors, Minoxidil is a safe and effective stimulator of hair growth that can be used for various types of hair loss. It is considered a valuable part of a treatment program, although it may not address the root cause of hair loss in conditions like male pattern baldness.

💊 Introduction to Hair Loss Treatments and Minoxidil

In this introductory segment, the hosts, Dr. Vickram Jash and Dr. Russell, welcome viewers to the Hair Loss Show, where they discuss various aspects of hair loss and its treatments. They delve into the topic of stimulation therapy as an alternative to addressing the root causes of hair loss, specifically mentioning minoxidil, a long-standing treatment option. Dr. Jash highlights Dr. Nudson's involvement in the original Australian trials of minoxidil as a lotion for balding scalps. The segment also touches on minoxidil's original purpose as a high blood pressure medication and its unexpected side effect of hair growth, leading to its use as a hair loss treatment. The hosts emphasize the safety and over-the-counter availability of minoxidil, suggesting its rigorous testing and widespread acceptance.

05:01

🌱 Minoxidil's Mechanism and Temporary Shedding Concern

This paragraph explains the mechanism of minoxidil, which involves extending the anagen phase of the hair growth cycle, thereby reducing hair shedding. The hosts discuss the initial increase in shedding that some users may experience when they start using minoxidil, reassuring viewers that this is a temporary phase indicating the onset of new hair growth. They stress the importance of patience, as the full benefits of minoxidil, including improved hair quality and volume, may take up to six months to become noticeable. The segment also addresses common misconceptions about minoxidil use, such as the necessity of its application frequency and volume, and clarifies that the treatment aims to stabilize hair loss before any improvement is observed.

10:03

📊 Minoxidil's Success Rates and Patient Feedback

The hosts present the success rates of minoxidil, noting that about 40% of users see a noticeable improvement in hair quality, primarily in terms of hair shaft thickness. They explain that an additional 40% of users maintain their current hair state without further deterioration, suggesting an overall positive outcome for 80% of patients. The paragraph also addresses how to determine if minoxidil is effective, advising users to discontinue the treatment temporarily to observe any changes in hair shedding. The hosts discuss variations in minoxidil concentration, such as the 5% and 7% options, and explain that the higher concentration does not necessarily yield better results, cautioning against marketing-driven misconceptions.

15:05

🔍 Minoxidil Application and Preparation Options

This segment provides practical advice on using minoxidil, including the recommended application frequency and volume. The hosts clarify that the product should be applied directly to the scalp, not the hair, and that it is available in two forms: liquid and foam. They discuss the benefits of the foam preparation, which is often better tolerated and less likely to cause scalp irritation or flakiness. The paragraph also touches on the absorption time for minoxidil, indicating that the foam version absorbs more quickly, allowing for more flexibility in post-application activities such as washing or exercising.

20:07

💡 Long-Term Use and Combination Therapy with Minoxidil

The final paragraph discusses the long-term use of minoxidil, acknowledging that while some patients use it consistently for years, others may be less consistent due to various reasons such as forgetfulness or discouragement. The hosts stress the importance of compliance and the role of minoxidil in combination therapy with other treatments, such as DHT blockers, for more effective hair loss management. They conclude by reiterating the safety and efficacy of minoxidil as a valuable component of hair loss treatment programs and look forward to discussing additional stimulators in the next episode.

Keywords

💡Hair Loss

Hair loss, also known as alopecia, is the primary theme of the video. It refers to the falling out of hair from the scalp, which can occur for various reasons. In the script, hair loss is discussed in the context of both men and women, and the focus is on understanding the causes and exploring medical and surgical treatments to address it.

💡Stimulation Therapy

Stimulation therapy is a method of treating hair loss by stimulating the hair follicles to promote growth. The script mentions that this therapy does not address the underlying cause of hair loss but is used to stimulate hair growth, particularly in conditions like androgenic alopecia.

💡Minoxidil

Minoxidil is a key concept in the script, identified as a long-standing product used for treating hair loss. Originally developed as a medication for high blood pressure, it was discovered to have the side effect of hair growth. The script discusses its use in both men and women, its mechanism of action, and its role as a topical treatment for hair loss.

💡Androgenic Alopecia

Androgenic alopecia is a type of hair loss that is linked to male hormones and is common in both men and women. The script refers to this condition when discussing the limitations of stimulation therapy, as these therapies do not address the root cause of hair miniaturization in androgenic alopecia.

💡Hair Cycle

The hair cycle is a natural process involving the growth, rest, and shedding of hair. The script explains how minoxidil affects this cycle by elongating the anagen phase, which is the growth phase of hair, leading to a decrease in hair shedding and an increase in the number of hairs growing at any given time.

💡Over-the-Counter Medication

An over-the-counter medication is a type of drug that can be purchased without a prescription. In the script, minoxidil is mentioned as transitioning from a prescription medication to an over-the-counter product, indicating its safety and widespread acceptance for use in treating hair loss.

💡Potassium Channels

Potassium channels are part of the mechanism by which minoxidil is believed to work, although the exact process is not fully understood. The script mentions that minoxidil's effect on potassium channels is part of how it stimulates hair growth, but the specifics are beyond the scope of the discussion.

💡Shedding Rate

The shedding rate refers to the rate at which hair naturally falls out. The script discusses how minoxidil can decrease the shedding rate, which is beneficial for those experiencing hair loss, as it means more hairs are growing at any one time.

💡Dose Response Curve

A dose-response curve illustrates the relationship between the dose of a drug and its effect. The script uses this concept to explain that increasing the concentration of minoxidil from 5% to higher percentages does not significantly increase its effectiveness, indicating a flat response beyond the 5% mark.

💡Compliance

Compliance in the context of the script refers to the consistency and adherence to a treatment regimen. It is discussed in relation to the long-term use of minoxidil, with some individuals using it for many years, while others may have issues with consistency due to various reasons such as forgetting or getting discouraged.

💡Topical Solution

A topical solution is a type of medication that is applied directly to the skin. The script mentions that minoxidil is available as a topical solution, which can be applied directly to the scalp to stimulate hair growth. It is also contrasted with an oral form, which requires a prescription.

💡Oral Minoxidil

Oral minoxidil refers to the form of the medication that is taken by mouth, originally used for high blood pressure. The script mentions that an oral form of minoxidil can also be used for hair loss, but it requires a prescription and is typically used at a lower dose that does not affect blood pressure.

play00:03

welcome to the hair loss show Dr Russell

play00:05

nudson and Dr vicam J aash discuss

play00:08

issues relating to hair loss and the

play00:10

medical and surgical treatment of hair

play00:11

loss in both men and

play00:16

women hi everyone my name is Dr vickram

play00:19

jash I'm Dr Russell nson and welcome to

play00:22

the hair loss show and this is episode

play00:24

number seven so if you've been with us

play00:27

up till now we've gone through uh the

play00:30

causes of hair loss and what happens and

play00:33

the difference between hair loss and

play00:35

shedding and we've sort of outlined what

play00:38

the uh the methodologies are of of

play00:40

treatments so we talked about blockers

play00:42

and now we're going to move on to the

play00:44

other side of the equation which is

play00:46

stimulation therapy now as we talked

play00:48

about in the last episode stimulation

play00:50

therapy uh is designed to do exactly

play00:53

what it says it just stimulates the hair

play00:55

it doesn't address the underlying issue

play00:58

certainly in things like male patent

play01:00

hair loss androgenic alopecia why the

play01:03

hair is miniaturizing in the first place

play01:05

these uh stimulators don't really

play01:08

address that uh issue but what they're

play01:10

doing is they are stimulating the hair

play01:13

so the first thing we want to talk about

play01:14

is one is a product that's uh been in

play01:17

the market for for many years uh and

play01:20

until uh for a long time was this you

play01:22

know was the only therapy really we had

play01:24

for for hair loss and that is

play01:26

minoxidil so minoxidil I mean you know

play01:29

lot about minox don't you cuz uh you

play01:32

were certainly um one of the initial the

play01:35

doctors who were involved in the trials

play01:37

and with minox aren't you that's correct

play01:39

vicam so in 1984 I had the privilege of

play01:42

being one of the five doctors in

play01:43

Australia that did the original research

play01:45

in Australia using monoxil as a lotion

play01:49

to apply to Bolding scalps so the

play01:52

background to the story is that monoxil

play01:54

was originally designed as a tablet to

play01:58

treat high blood pressure and one of the

play02:00

unusual side effects that It produced uh

play02:04

in the method of action that that it the

play02:07

utilizes was that people became Haier so

play02:11

80% of people using oral minoxidil in

play02:16

the dose that they were using for high

play02:17

blood pressure noticed increase in hair

play02:21

generally so basically on the arms the

play02:24

legs the chest the face you name it that

play02:26

they got hairy it was kind of like a

play02:28

werewolf syndrome if you're like

play02:30

but curiously they also noticed that

play02:33

some of the mild patients who were

play02:35

baling got some uh reversal of their

play02:38

Bolding using oral minoxidil so this

play02:41

stimulated the idea uh for the

play02:44

pharmacology company to investigate

play02:46

whether you could just stimulate the

play02:49

hairs you want to stimulate so in that

play02:51

scenario you put it into a topical

play02:53

lotion and you only apply it where you

play02:55

want the hair to work now so This

play02:58

research was started in

play03:00

1984 and we kind of have an idea how it

play03:05

partly works but still 35 years later we

play03:07

don't really exactly know how it works

play03:10

it has something to do with potassium

play03:12

channels but it's really Beyond uh you

play03:15

know either my level of knowledge or

play03:19

your level of knowledge to go any deeper

play03:20

than that but it certainly does have an

play03:24

effect so we did the research on both

play03:28

men and women Australian had the first

play03:30

women's trial in the world for using

play03:31

topical monoxil for the female patent

play03:34

hair loss it came on the market in

play03:36

Australia 1989 as a prescription

play03:39

medicine and it's safe that's the

play03:41

important thing to notice this is a safe

play03:43

therapy it lasted as a topical therapy

play03:46

only for about 10 years be on

play03:49

prescription before it became an

play03:51

over-the-counter medication so the first

play03:53

thing I want to tell you about the

play03:55

medicine is that it's an

play03:56

over-the-counter medicine you can buy it

play03:58

from the chemist I think that highlights

play04:01

its safety profile is so if anything's

play04:03

available over the counter it's gone

play04:05

through the very rigorous testing and it

play04:07

is and they was a prescription for a

play04:09

while but when they realized nobody was

play04:11

getting harmed they knew they could

play04:12

downgrade it from a prescription

play04:14

medicine to an over-the-counter

play04:15

medication so this is an important thing

play04:17

for people to know so

play04:21

minoxidil how we don't know exactly how

play04:24

it works but it does two things that we

play04:26

really want to focus on number one it

play04:29

has an effect upon the hair cycle

play04:31

remember we talked about the hair cycle

play04:33

where we have the growth phase which we

play04:35

call the antigen cycle so what monoxil

play04:38

does is it elongates it lengthens the

play04:42

antigen cycle so the way that becomes

play04:44

noticeable to patients is that they

play04:47

decrease their shedding rate now the

play04:50

advantage of that is that if you Fe that

play04:52

you have a hair loss problem or an

play04:54

excessive shedding problem then being

play04:56

able to slow down the shedding rate is

play04:58

good because first you're less worried

play05:01

that's right and number two it means

play05:02

more hairs are growing on your head at

play05:04

any one time than otherwise would be the

play05:06

case that said I've got to tell you that

play05:09

one thing that does make people nervous

play05:11

is that there is a percentage of

play05:14

patients when they start using monox all

play05:16

then in the first month or two months

play05:18

they notice an increase in shedding rate

play05:20

they think my golly this is supposed to

play05:23

save my hair and yet it's making it fall

play05:25

out even faster well the reassuring

play05:27

thing about this is number one it's a

play05:29

temporary phase number two it tells you

play05:33

that when hairs finish growing and they

play05:35

stop being attached to the skin they sit

play05:38

there till something tugs them out when

play05:39

you put monoxil in the system and you

play05:42

start the next grow cycle it pushes the

play05:44

old hair out so the reason that people

play05:47

go through this temporary increase in

play05:49

shedding is because the new hair is

play05:51

pushing the old hair out so that's a

play05:53

good thing it not a bad thing I know but

play05:56

what we're what I see and what I'm sure

play05:58

you see is that people go oh you know

play06:00

what I tried minoxidil topical minoxidil

play06:04

and it made my hair loss worse and I was

play06:07

like you know this is just this is

play06:08

horrible this is not for me and then

play06:10

they gave up and walked away and the

play06:12

problem with that is that they've

play06:13

invested in the monoxil they've tried it

play06:15

for a few weeks they've had all the

play06:18

downsides of it which is that initial

play06:20

shedding without the benefit without the

play06:22

benefit and so you know we all what we

play06:25

say to all our patients if if you're

play06:26

starting on an oxal listen be prepared

play06:28

for that shedding and power through it

play06:31

because the good stuff is coming you

play06:33

know a few weeks after so that leads

play06:34

into the whole concept of stimulators in

play06:37

that if you remember from our discussion

play06:39

on the podcast about the hair cycle when

play06:42

a hair sheds out a replacement hair

play06:44

doesn't come through for 3 months so

play06:47

realistically when you're using

play06:48

stimulation therapy you can't expect the

play06:51

response to happen in weeks it's going

play06:53

to happen over a period of months so for

play06:56

monoxil specifically we would say to you

play06:59

if it is 4 to 6 months before you're

play07:01

really going to notice whether you're

play07:03

getting a benefit or not the first thing

play07:05

you might notice is a reduction in

play07:07

shedding even if you have that little

play07:09

bit of increase in shedding but for you

play07:11

to notice an improvement in the quality

play07:13

of your hair and therefore the volume of

play07:15

your hair forget it it's not going to

play07:18

happen in under four months and you'd be

play07:20

very lucky if you're one of the people

play07:21

to get it at four months it's more in

play07:24

the second six months so you've got to

play07:27

power through as you said and be patient

play07:29

so people who come and say to us that

play07:32

they've tried M oxal and it didn't work

play07:34

there are two questions we asked them

play07:36

number one is how long did you use it

play07:38

for because they may not have used it

play07:39

for long enough and number two I asked

play07:42

them to Define failure because what they

play07:45

mean is they didn't grow any extra hair

play07:48

but if I say to them well but did you

play07:50

get worse while you were using monoxy I

play07:52

said well no and I said then my next

play07:55

question is well what happened when you

play07:56

stop using minox I say oh thinner so I

play08:01

say the first goal of stimulation

play08:03

therapy is to make sure that you're not

play08:06

deteriorating that's an acceptable

play08:08

result it may not be your favored result

play08:10

but it's an acceptable result and this

play08:12

is something we talk about all the time

play08:14

isn't it with with medical therapy uh

play08:16

and I know you say this I say is that

play08:19

the goal of medical therapy at the

play08:21

Baseline is stability if we can maintain

play08:24

stability you and I are going to be

play08:25

high-fiving our patients all day long

play08:27

isn't it that's right because even if

play08:28

the p isn't ecstatic they're not going

play08:31

backwards this is like leaking bucket

play08:33

therapy right you know we've got to stop

play08:35

this leak coming out of the bucket so

play08:37

obviously the second phase which takes

play08:39

longer for people to notice is whether

play08:41

they're going to get Improvement so if

play08:43

you ask what are the percentage success

play08:46

rate of these things there is again it's

play08:49

a complicated thing so let's walk you

play08:51

through it in bite-size chunks first if

play08:54

you look at the trials about 40% of

play08:57

people that used monoxil topically were

play09:00

able to get a noticeable Improvement in

play09:02

the quality of their hairs now if we

play09:05

break down that 40% into what that

play09:07

actually means it is mostly about

play09:09

increasing the diameter of the shaft of

play09:12

the hair so a weaker hair is becoming a

play09:15

stronger hair and that's what's

play09:17

producing the notable Improvement there

play09:19

is a little bit of an increase in the

play09:21

number of hairs that will grow at any

play09:22

one time but the major benefit of using

play09:25

monoxil is to increase the thickness of

play09:28

the hair shaft so that's the first thing

play09:30

that people need to understand that's

play09:32

what we're trying to achieve so if we

play09:34

look at it from therapy we're saying you

play09:37

need to be on it because we're going to

play09:39

stimulate the hairs and we're going to

play09:41

try and keep them now what I said before

play09:43

is that monoxil can be used for any type

play09:46

of hair loss not just boldness in men or

play09:49

female patent fitting uh for people that

play09:51

have had uh malts which is like

play09:54

synchronized shedding that maybe after

play09:56

the birth of a child maybe after a fever

play09:58

Maybe maybe after a change of medication

play10:00

maybe after an acute stressful event um

play10:03

even conditions like alip alpc areata

play10:06

where the immune system switches off the

play10:08

hair follicle we can stimulate the hair

play10:10

follicle to see if we can get it to come

play10:11

back faster so that's the benefit of of

play10:15

using the the therapy so yes 40% of

play10:18

people over time will notice an

play10:20

improvement there's another 40% of

play10:23

people who just notice that they're not

play10:24

getting worse at least in the short term

play10:27

you know 1 to two years so that's the

play10:29

second benefit of it so maybe 80% of our

play10:31

patients are going to use uh minoxidil

play10:36

and somee of success with some degree of

play10:37

success and then people say to me well

play10:40

you know how do I find how do I know if

play10:41

it's working I said well probably the

play10:43

only way to be sure is to stop it and

play10:46

see what happens so if you stop the

play10:48

therapy and you stop stimulating the

play10:50

hair with Minoxidil if you notice an

play10:52

increase in shedding some four to8 weeks

play10:55

later then you know that was having an

play10:57

impact upon the hair cycle right so

play11:00

sometimes you have to withdraw to the

play11:01

therapy to be sure about the therapy now

play11:05

the next thing we need to talk about is

play11:07

what's written on the box it says one

play11:10

mill to be used twice a day now there's

play11:12

a reason why it says that it's because

play11:15

that's what we did in the trial in 1984

play11:18

that's what we submitted to government

play11:19

in

play11:20

1985 and so the therapeutic Goods

play11:23

Administration said yes you can bu you

play11:25

can Market it for a mill twice a day

play11:28

that doesn't

play11:29

address two critical factors number one

play11:32

is how long does the effect last in the

play11:34

skin the answer is 21 hours so

play11:37

realistically it only has to be used

play11:39

once a day if you want to use it twice a

play11:41

day that's fine you're not going to do

play11:42

any harm but realistically EAS to be

play11:45

used once a day the second thing is

play11:47

addressing the one mil the reason that

play11:49

one mil was the number was that they

play11:51

were trying to standardize how everybody

play11:53

in the trial was being treated but but

play11:56

again in real life situations some

play11:58

people have a small area of hair loss

play12:00

some people have a large area of hair

play12:02

loss so if you have a small uh area of

play12:05

hair loss like you would put a cream on

play12:06

a rash you just cover the area and the

play12:09

amount is the amount if you got a larger

play12:11

area you use a larger amount so it

play12:14

really doesn't matter about measuring it

play12:16

to the one mill you don't have to stick

play12:17

to the one M you just need to cover the

play12:19

area you're trying to treat so those are

play12:21

two things I want to emphasize number

play12:22

one is once a day is a very reasonable

play12:26

uh uh frequency of use number to treat

play12:30

the entire area you want don't just

play12:32

worry about the one meal answer cool so

play12:35

there's a couple of other things you

play12:36

know so you know sometimes we get a lot

play12:38

of feedback from patients who are who

play12:40

are on minoxidil who are trialing

play12:42

minoxidil and so here's a few things

play12:44

that we commonly go here I'm on 5%

play12:47

monoidal I hear there's a 7% monoidal 7%

play12:50

must be better than 5% all right now

play12:53

that sounds like a logical thing until

play12:55

you understand what we call a dose

play12:57

response curve which means if you

play12:59

increase the dose do you increase the

play13:01

response the positive response so with

play13:04

monoxil it works like this yes it works

play13:07

up to about 5% here right at the 5% Mark

play13:11

you're getting this response if you go

play13:13

to 7% you might get that response if you

play13:16

go to 8% you might get that response if

play13:18

you go to 10% you might get that

play13:20

response it's almost a flat line right

play13:23

so basically the reason behind this is

play13:26

marketing because people believe that

play13:29

Solutions work better so don't be fooled

play13:31

by that if really 7% or 6% or 8% or 9%

play13:37

was better than 5% why isn't it

play13:39

available at the chemist seriously why

play13:42

isn't it available it is so as you can

play13:44

see you know 5% is applicable across the

play13:48

board yes theoretically there's an

play13:50

advantage to 7% but it's absolutely

play13:52

minuscule and you're not you know it's

play13:54

not going to be noticeable by most

play13:56

people and the same is true with the

play13:58

inverse because there is a a version so

play14:00

if you look at minoxidil which is rain

play14:03

or regain that you might see at the at

play14:05

the chemist there is a men's version of

play14:08

it and there's a female version of it as

play14:10

well so for men mostly they will use 5%

play14:12

for women you can use 5% or 2% now the

play14:15

reason that we have these two different

play14:17

ones is because some women are very

play14:18

fearful of getting increased facial hair

play14:21

from absorption through the skin using

play14:22

the 5% and the interesting fact is that

play14:27

if you start on 5% you get a quicker

play14:29

response than if than you start on the

play14:31

2% it's not necessarily a better

play14:34

response so what you can do in this

play14:37

situation is if we have women who are

play14:38

using 5% and they're noticing a little

play14:40

bit of increased facial hair we can

play14:42

downgrade them to to 2% to help that

play14:45

because that's reversible by the way

play14:47

that increased stimulation is reversible

play14:49

which also tells you if you stop the

play14:51

therapy you lose the effect so it is a

play14:53

reversible effect in all cases so you

play14:56

can often maintain somewhat on 2%

play14:59

after you've started on on them for 5%

play15:01

so that's okay so the difference between

play15:03

the pink box and the blue box is that

play15:05

marketing pink to the women seems to

play15:06

work better than than than just marking

play15:09

the blue men's version so that again is

play15:11

a marketing principle not necessarily a

play15:13

science principle the other thing that

play15:16

we commonly see is people come and say

play15:17

oh look I've started minoxidil I really

play15:19

don't like it it makes my hair greasy or

play15:22

I'm getting really skitchy sorry itchy

play15:25

flaky scalp and that comes down to the

play15:27

preparation and in fact oxal comes in

play15:29

two preparations there's a liquid and

play15:32

there's a foam and the liquid is the the

play15:34

base preparation is propylene glycol and

play15:37

that can cause uh itchiness and Flaky

play15:39

scalp uh in about 30% of uh people that

play15:43

use that so um I generally sort of say

play15:46

to people look there are two options the

play15:48

foam is sometimes a lot uh better

play15:50

tolerated in a lot of people and it's

play15:53

like comes in a mousse can you shake it

play15:55

and you squir a bit into the into the

play15:57

cap and then you can just use your

play15:58

finger or or a cotton butt just to to

play16:00

paint it on and the other key there is

play16:02

that it is there is absolutely no point

play16:04

in applying the monoxil to the hair

play16:07

right the monoxil has to be on the scalp

play16:10

it doesn't do anything if you soak your

play16:12

hair in monoxil because the hair is not

play16:15

going to the hair is effectively dead

play16:17

rope and therefore is not going to

play16:18

absorb and you're not going to get any

play16:20

benefits so painting it onto the scalp

play16:22

is important so foam I find is better

play16:25

tolerated in a lot of it's less grezy

play16:27

because it doesn't have the PG yeah

play16:29

right it's pg3 which is the reason they

play16:31

developed it was because you know not

play16:33

just the Dermatological reaction the

play16:35

flaking that Vic was talking about but

play16:37

also women finding they were having

play16:39

styling issues with it so this is why

play16:41

they developed a PG free uh version of

play16:43

it to do that but the chemistry is

play16:46

interesting too because the foam absorbs

play16:48

quicker through the skin than the lotion

play16:50

so the lotion takes 60 to 90 minutes to

play16:53

absorb through the skin the foam takes

play16:55

10 minutes to absorb through the skin so

play16:56

when people are saying well when can I

play16:58

wash my hair afterwards or when kind of

play17:00

get sweaty afterwards um as long as you

play17:03

have applied the lotion maybe 90 minutes

play17:05

before washing or sport you're going to

play17:07

be okay as long as you put it on 15

play17:09

minutes before uh with the foam for 15

play17:11

minutes before uh sport or washing

play17:13

you're going to be okay you don't really

play17:15

have to keep it on for 4 6 8 hours and

play17:18

wash it out the next morning it really

play17:19

will absorb through a lot quicker than

play17:21

that cool so in summary minox really

play17:24

really it's been around for a long time

play17:25

very safe really good stimulator of hair

play17:28

growth it comes in um a liquid and a

play17:31

foam and the 5% is applicable for most

play17:35

people and most people don't react don't

play17:38

react um and the other thing to not note

play17:41

that you don't need to take it twice a

play17:42

day once a day is perfectly fine um if

play17:45

you take it you know start taking it be

play17:48

aware that there is going to be an

play17:49

initial shedding phase after using some

play17:52

people which you may experience some

play17:54

shedding absolutely and but power

play17:56

through that and then uh the growth will

play17:58

will come after that and um it can you

play18:01

can take it as an oral form as well okay

play18:04

but that's back to prescription medicine

play18:06

so oral monoxil is something that's

play18:07

increasingly being used because people

play18:10

don't like necessarily to use a topical

play18:12

solution in amongst their hair uh for

play18:15

styling reasons so you can use a much

play18:18

lower dose uh rather than the tablet

play18:21

that was used for high blood pressure in

play18:24

fact we use such a low dose that it

play18:25

doesn't affect the blood pressure but

play18:27

again you'd have to have that prescribed

play18:29

by a doctor somebody who knows what he's

play18:31

talking about like a specialist who

play18:33

works with hair loss would understand

play18:34

this rather than the general

play18:36

practitioner they would be very

play18:37

reluctant to do this so it's a very

play18:40

useful medication for any type of hair

play18:42

loss and it has a role in the treatment

play18:45

of boldness um and most people might

play18:47

start with this first but it's a

play18:50

short-term therapy for Bolding in my

play18:52

opinion because for most people it's not

play18:55

targeting the problem which is the DHT

play18:57

buildup and the f IC it doesn't have

play18:59

that effect so it's slowing things down

play19:01

without necessarily stopping what are

play19:03

your thoughts on compliance I mean how

play19:05

you've used it for a long

play19:07

time uh have you seen people going oh

play19:09

yeah I've been on monoidal once a day I

play19:12

use it every night and I've been on it

play19:13

for 20 odd years yes there are people

play19:16

like that but the truth of the matter is

play19:17

most people waver in waver out they stop

play19:20

for different reasons they forget they

play19:23

get discouraged right because they're

play19:25

expecting it to be better when in fact

play19:27

it's stable

play19:28

and often they come to me and say yeah I

play19:32

realized when I stopped that I got worse

play19:34

so maybe I should start back on it again

play19:35

but is there something better the answer

play19:38

is there's no 100% answer for anything

play19:41

in hair loss uh but it is a very useful

play19:44

medicine and I rank it just behind using

play19:47

in boldness I rank it behind using

play19:49

blockers first uh and other types of

play19:52

hair loss are rank at number one and and

play19:55

this is going down another rabbit hole

play19:56

but you can combine therapy can't you

play19:58

the blockers and stimulators we'll talk

play20:00

about that at the end because there is

play20:02

there are certain conditions where it

play20:04

makes sense to combine a blocker and a

play20:06

stimulator but certainly I want you to

play20:09

know it's safe I want you to know it

play20:12

works pretty well and that it's a very

play20:16

useful part of

play20:19

a treatment program for virtually any

play20:23

type of hair loss uh there are sometimes

play20:25

you might under use it shortterm but

play20:27

mostly you're going to have to use it

play20:29

long term perfect okay I hope that's

play20:32

been of use to you or I think that's

play20:34

great I mean I think we've got covered a

play20:35

lot with M oxidal so yeah I think that's

play20:38

uh fantastic and we'll uh on the next

play20:40

episode we'll go through some of the

play20:41

other uh stimulators um uh for for hair

play20:45

loss okay but we'll see you next episode

play20:47

thank you see you
