Transcripts

play00:00

well hey there I am really excited for

play00:02

this Monday motivation where I am joined

play00:05

by one of our students and adun

play00:07

professors William bowler and so William

play00:10

not only is a student in our DBA program

play00:12

our number one Forbes ranked DBA program

play00:15

but he's especially a student in my

play00:17

class that just finished high

play00:18

performance leadership and one of the

play00:21

culminating assignment options was to

play00:23

write a leadership mini book I know many

play00:25

of you have heard me talk about this and

play00:27

William did that he wrote this really

play00:29

cool leadership book we'll put a link uh

play00:31

in this email or however you're getting

play00:33

this video to the book but I really

play00:35

wanted to have him join us and share a

play00:36

little bit about what he chose to write

play00:38

about and how it's informed his

play00:39

leadership so hi William hello hi so

play00:43

yeah tell us a little bit about what is

play00:44

the book about and why did you decide to

play00:47

write on this topic well I decided to

play00:49

write on a topic because I've been using

play00:51

mindfulness now for about three decades

play00:53

um and you if if you if you purchase a

play00:55

book you you you will be able to read um

play00:58

kind of my trials and tri ulations as a

play01:00

child and what what got me here that's

play01:03

right the title of the book is the

play01:04

mindful leader a four-week road mapap to

play01:07

master OCD elevate your leadership and

play01:11

improve your life that's it that's a

play01:14

mouthful it is so U as a child I had OCD

play01:18

and as an adult I still have OCD uh but

play01:21

the difference is uh for the last three

play01:24

decades or so I've been controlling it

play01:25

and mastering it through the use of uh

play01:27

mindfulness and meditation

play01:30

uh when when I started using mindfulness

play01:32

it wasn't called mindfulness it was just

play01:33

called meditation basically yeah um yeah

play01:37

so so uh that's why I went forward and

play01:39

and decided to write the book uh as I

play01:42

started looking into the literature I

play01:43

found that mindfulness leadership was a

play01:45

big thing still is a big thing and uh

play01:48

it's it's becoming more and more of a

play01:50

big thing and and here's the thing about

play01:51

mindfulness there's there's good news

play01:53

and bad news about mindfulness the good

play01:55

news is we're all born with it if you

play01:57

have Consciousness if you're if you're

play02:00

and if you're a if you're awake okay and

play02:02

you're walking around and you're

play02:04

performing a job and you're you have

play02:06

mindfulness you may not know it but you

play02:08

do uh uh but the bad news is everything

play02:12

that goes on in our lives uh from cell

play02:14

phones to Family Matters to job uh

play02:18

everything draws us away from our

play02:20

mindfulness so I like to think of

play02:21

mindfulness as a as a uh kind of a jug

play02:24

of milk that's been sitting in your

play02:25

refrigerator for the last 40 years and

play02:28

it's spoiled and it's your job wake it

play02:30

up and use it and use it to your

play02:32

advantage um so we all have it all we

play02:35

have to do is wake it up and unspoil it

play02:37

so I love that analogy that's so great

play02:40

and so you used mindfulness techniques

play02:42

and strategies not only to master OCD

play02:45

but really improve your life and your

play02:47

leadership and that's what you're doing

play02:49

today and you're in our DBA program so

play02:51

we know yes yes 100% I'm glad to be here

play02:54

as uh in the top ranked DBA program and

play02:57

that actually got yeah that actually got

play02:58

the uh the notification uh and the

play03:01

accolades when right after I had uh kind

play03:03

of got into the program so I'm really

play03:06

really glad to be here well I'm sure

play03:08

it's because you enroll that really

play03:10

helps

play03:12

elev yeah okay uh so so in in the book

play03:16

in the book I give you some uhh some of

play03:18

my childhood right and and I tell you

play03:21

how I got to where I'm at okay it's it's

play03:23

it's it's a bit of a tearjerker there

play03:25

were some trials and tribulations and

play03:27

some trauma as a child uh that brought

play03:30

on the OCD um and having OCD I uh I

play03:35

almost didn't make it into college

play03:36

because when I got into college and was

play03:38

accepted uh we went through what what

play03:40

was called a u a trial period that's

play03:43

like a week of uh of of tests and where

play03:46

they're going to place you and what

play03:47

classes and that sort of thing and I was

play03:49

reading on the fourth grade reading

play03:50

level and that was not acceptable and

play03:52

the reason that was happening is because

play03:54

when I was reading in in high school I

play03:56

could only read the first sentence of

play03:59

every paragraph

play04:00

if you know anything about OCD it's uh

play04:02

it's called obsessive compulsive because

play04:04

you have obsessive thoughts then you

play04:06

have these ritualistic compulsions that

play04:08

come along with that to relieve the

play04:10

stress of your obsessions okay so my

play04:13

obsession was death and loss Through

play04:15

Fire how it got there I don't know but

play04:17

that's what I that's what I focused on

play04:19

and so my my my my whole ritual was I

play04:23

had to read the first uh sentence of

play04:26

every paragraph at least four times but

play04:29

the more stressed out you get you you

play04:31

you read it four times and then you read

play04:33

four time four and then it's four time

play04:35

four time four my point is is you can

play04:38

get stuck in a loop and start what I

play04:39

call spiraling um and and that's where

play04:43

um uh I had to learn when when when I

play04:45

went to remedial reading which was

play04:47

entirely embarrassing and I tell you I

play04:49

when I got the letter I if last year was

play04:53

was the first time I mentioned it to my

play04:54

parents and I never told my father right

play04:58

last year isn't that amazing how we

play05:00

carry these things with us

play05:04

oh it was I but after that I forgot it

play05:08

because uh it's it's really a reminder

play05:09

of the past and a reminder of uh how

play05:12

it's good because it reminded me where

play05:13

I'm at but it's bad because it was it

play05:15

was really I had to clear the air right

play05:18

so in the book I go through fstep

play05:20

four-week process and the first step is

play05:23

to surrender okay when I surrendered to

play05:25

OCD I did it involuntarily I got sick

play05:29

and tired of it I was s I'm sitting

play05:30

alone in my apartment I just screamed at

play05:32

top my lungs and you'll read that in the

play05:34

book I'm done with you I'm through with

play05:36

you you

play05:38

win just do what you want to do and I

play05:41

expected my what I call my OCD monster

play05:43

to take over at that time and he didn't

play05:46

it's really weird it's like when when I

play05:48

gave no resistance neither did he right

play05:51

what a turning point I remember that it

play05:53

was like such a turning point because

play05:54

you're like where's this going to go

play05:56

which way and then it was like wow yeah

play05:59

it just relieved it's a lot of stress

play06:00

and a lot of pressure and at the same

play06:02

time I was seeing a psychologist through

play06:04

through the college and I actually saw

play06:06

that psychologist all four years so uh

play06:09

he helped me tremendously because he

play06:10

would give me little assignments to go

play06:12

to go take a look at meditative

play06:13

techniques and relaxation techniques Etc

play06:16

some of the stuff I I go over in the

play06:17

book um step two and step step two

play06:20

through five are week-long processes

play06:23

each okay and I do that because it's an

play06:25

introduction now after you learn this

play06:26

stuff you can do what whatever you want

play06:28

to with it you know whatever feels best

play06:30

for you pick and choose right and the

play06:32

other thing is is is this book isn't

play06:34

only for people with OCD once you learn

play06:37

relaxation and mindfulness and

play06:39

visualization you can use these in any

play06:41

part of your life yeah it's incredible

play06:44

the changes that that that that it can

play06:45

make the reason why I why I I I I kind

play06:49

of bent it toward OCD was because I

play06:52

wanted to demonstrate how powerful

play06:54

mindfulness is I never took one

play06:56

psychotropic medication when I when I

play06:58

had OCD and I had it really bad okay so

play07:03

um uh that's how powerful mindfulness is

play07:07

that's why I put these steps in the in

play07:09

the book well I love it because this is

play07:11

like a Hands-On guide I thought the same

play07:13

thing when I was reading it first of all

play07:14

you have to get this book because the

play07:16

way William tells you this story you

play07:18

will immediately be drawn in and there's

play07:20

such a credibility to it because it's

play07:22

like people know wow you've been there

play07:24

but also like I can take away so much

play07:26

from it too even though maybe I can't

play07:28

relate to the OCD part too much who

play07:30

knows but also it's like wow these these

play07:32

work if this can work in the most

play07:34

difficult and intense of circumstances

play07:37

this can work in any leadership or life

play07:40

peril so I really appreciate it and it's

play07:42

so applied that's what's so great is

play07:44

this isn't some long book on Theory it's

play07:46

a very short and sweet mini guide book

play07:49

and I hear you're working on a companion

play07:51

journal for it too which is I am I am I

play07:54

am yes I

play07:57

am yeah and and so uh um mindfulness

play08:00

within itself is when you when you

play08:02

define the word mindfulness if you ask a

play08:04

100 people maybe 10 of those may know

play08:06

what it is and out of the 10 they're

play08:08

going to tell you something different

play08:09

but mindfulness is just is just

play08:12

basically paying attention being being

play08:14

aware of your present tense at all times

play08:18

right and and having uh ADHD or OCD is

play08:21

like having one of your therapy dogs

play08:24

with you I had I had a friend when I was

play08:25

in college that had a therapy dog and

play08:27

anytime he would be close to to to a

play08:30

seizure the therapy dog would put his

play08:32

paw on his on on on on on Jack's knee

play08:35

and so Jack could then take the

play08:36

preemptive steps he needed to take uh to

play08:39

toh get himself to a safe place and to

play08:41

squelch what was going to happen to him

play08:44

right so U uh having mindfulness is like

play08:47

having that little uh uh dog in your

play08:50

head that that little friend that lets

play08:52

you know when things are going to start

play08:54

spiraling and that that is where the

play08:56

magic is I uh my spouse is extremely

play09:00

understanding and there are times when I

play09:01

get very stressed out I'm I'm having

play09:04

trouble I'm I'm checking the stove I

play09:07

know immediately when I'm going to start

play09:09

to spiral so I go to my wife and I go do

play09:11

me a favor I'm G to step outside can you

play09:13

please check the stove and then tell me

play09:15

come out tell me it's okay and so that's

play09:17

what she does and so she come out she

play09:20

it's fine it's off you're good to go um

play09:24

that's what mindfulness does for you it

play09:26

doesn't pure your OCD it helps you

play09:29

control your OCD and or ADHD and if you

play09:34

want to use it to for for for your

play09:36

leadership yeah go for it it does

play09:39

nothing but but uh but but increases

play09:40

your leadership you're so right because

play09:42

how many of us could use better focus

play09:44

and to be present myself included in

play09:46

meetings when there's emails and there's

play09:48

texts and there's all sorts of things

play09:49

you're thinking about on your to-do list

play09:51

this really helps you develop that

play09:53

mindfulness security so William I'm so

play09:56

excited for you we'll put a link I

play09:57

highly recommend this book it's

play09:59

extremely readable and to gift it as

play10:01

well because you may know folks that

play10:02

struggle with this or who could benefit

play10:04

from this and it just makes a great gift

play10:06

so thank you for joining us on our

play10:07

Monday morning motivation I think we

play10:10

need to change it to mindfulness Monday

play10:12

I like that even better mindfulness

play10:14
