what's going on my friends i hope you're
all doing absolutely fantastic today
we're going to be talking about these
two lenses right here the nifty 50 yes
the sony fe f 1.8 versus the viltrox f
1.8 they're obviously both f 1.8 lenses
50 millimeter so they're great to
compare with each other they are
slightly different in price and the
performance is interesting this is an
interesting comparison especially for
photography and videography so we're
going to be going through a little bit
of a photo shoot and obviously a little
bit of video style as well to see what
the differences are in these lenses who
it is pretty much for and if it's worth
it all right let's get into it
so the nifty 50 focal length that a lot
of people love and i'm going to be
putting these two lenses up against each
other this is the sony fe
50mm f 1.8 and the viltrox 50mm f 1.8 fe
the reason why i'm comparing these two
because well they're both f 1.8 they're
both 50 millimeters and for sony
e-mountain and i know a lot of people
own this lens right here this is the 50
fe 1 8 so full full frame don't get this
confused with the 50 mil oss lens now
not a lot of people have this but this
is an aps-c lens it covers your aps-c
sensor and it's not a full-frame lens
this one covers your full-frame sensor
and does not have oss but neither does
this one so these two are very
comparable they're slightly different
price ranges this one's 248 and this one
is
379 us so it's a little bit more
expensive it's definitely a lot heavier
but which one is actually better is the
newer viltrx lens better than the old og
50ml f 1.8 by sony so the viltrx 50mm f
1.8 has an aperture of f 1.8 to f 16.
has a minimum focus distance of 55
centimeters a front filter thread of 55
millimeters and it weighs in at a total
340 grams whereas the sony is a 50
millimeter f 1.8 to f 22 has a minimum
focusing distance of 45 centimeters and
a front filter thread of 49 millimeters
and weighs only 186 grams now this
review is actually a lot closer than i
was expecting when i tested this in
terms of photography you know it's
splitting hairs it really is splitting
hairs but when it comes to video that's
when these two are a little bit
different
but when it comes to autofocus
performance they are pretty much the
same it just comes down to the sony lens
is definitely louder when it comes to
autofocus so in this scenario here the
viltrx actually performed quite well
this is wide open at f 1.8 and it was on
object tracking with fast responsive
autofocus tracking so they are pretty
much the same when it comes to autofocus
and video and you're pretty much
splitting hairs here when it comes to
that autofocus performance
you can actually see there is a little
bit of focus breathing on the sony lens
so if this is important to you then the
viltrox lens is going to be better with
that focus breathing so autofocus speeds
seem to be the same in many situations
there's one situation where i was
outside filming these lenses pulling
focus from close to far and you could
see the sony does hesitate a little bit
does a little bit of back focusing and
then catches focus whereas the viltrox
catches directly on that's why i tested
it in a couple of different situations
but overall i think the viltrox is just
a little bit faster when it comes to
autofocus speed and accuracy so when it
came to that photo shoot yeah i really
didn't like the performance of the
viltrox lens like there was a problem
with that focusing and i was getting a
little bit frustrated when it came to
that and
you don't want to be frustrated when
it's on a shoot and you don't want to
have lacking autofocus performance
because that could be a make or break
when it comes to getting that perfect
shot at the right time we were a little
bit pressed for time because the storm
was rolling in at outside so we actually
had to move inside because this lens was
just it was not working how i wanted it
to work and how it should work the auto
focus performance just was not great
with a real life moving subject whereas
the sony lens just caught on every
single time sure it's clunky it's loud
when it comes to photography but
autofocus is reliable and that's what
you really want at the end of the day
when you put this into the image chart
you can definitely see that in the
center they are both very sharp you go
out to the corners it's a little bit
soft wide open at f 1.8 but then you
stop down to you know f 2.2 f 2.8 f 4 f
5.6 and it actually is quite decent
performance from both of these lenses
you do notice a little bit of chromatic
aberration when it comes to the viltrox
lens it does show a little bit when you
are wide open especially outside on the
edges now when it comes to the image
performance of these the main difference
is actually that distortion you can
actually see a little bit of pin
cushioning on the viltrox lens as
opposed to your sony lens sony lens is
pretty much low distortion if not any at
all but you will have to correct that if
you are a photographer and you're doing
some sort of landscape sort of stuff the
viltrox has that pin cushioning and you
need to correct for that
now in terms of ghosting flaring and
vignetting they're both pretty much the
same the votrox does have a little bit
more vignette around the corners wide
open but you do stop down it obviously
does get a lot better but it really
depends on if that's the desired look
you're going for but you can actually
change that in post-production anyway
now they are both f 1.8 but the minimum
focusing distance of the 50mm sony is 45
centimeters so you can get a little bit
closer to your subject which potentially
will give you
more background blur but the big thing
about the viltrox lens it has a slightly
wider field of view it's not exactly the
same as the sony lens you can see the
difference between uh when you go side
by side on these images that the viltrox
lens is slightly wider and the big thing
is your minimum focusing distance is 55
centimeters so it's 10 centimeters
difference which is you know this much
but if you are shooting some macro stuff
you probably wouldn't choose any of
these lenses but you know 45 millimeters
for the sony is a pretty decent
performance when it comes to the viltrx
55 millimeters does seem just a little
bit too far away so overall is this
worth 130 us more than the sony lens
it really depends when it comes down to
photography i'd say no they're pretty
much much of a muchness if anything pick
up the sony if you are a photographer
and photographer only when it comes to
video
that's autofocus performance is great
for both of them but the sound on the
50mm
sony lens is just it's too much it
really is really annoying it's clunky
and i just absolutely hate the sound of
this thing so if you are a video shooter
and you're picking up the 51.8
in sony i absolutely recommend don't do
it you do have the viltrox will be
better for video especially when it
comes to manual focusing now this manual
focus ring here is almost linear so if
you're actually pulling focus uh each
time you're going to pretty much get the
exact same spot but when it comes to
manual focus on the sony lens that's
when it becomes a little bit difficult
and the big thing is if you're trying to
pull focus into that exact same spot
you're not going to get the exact same
spot each time whereas with the viltrox
it's almost linear just like your
g-master lenses it's great for manual
focusing you also do have this aperture
ring as well so if you do want to change
the aperture on the lens you can whereas
the sony is just absolutely basic that's
why it is much cheaper but when it comes
down to that image quality and
performance they are pretty much the
same here so when it actually comes down
to overall is this thing worth it if you
don't have the 50mm lens definitely
don't buy the viltrx lens but if you are
choosing between these two and you are a
hybrid shooter i would still probably
edge the viltrox lens but still there is
nothing wrong with getting this lens if
you can deal with that autofocus noise
if you're actually recording a lot of
on-camera audio
you probably won't like this lens the
viltrox lens will probably be the one
for you but anyway guys i hope you
enjoyed this video if you did give it a
thumbs up that would be absolutely
amazing subscribe to my youtube channel
