round co-main event at UFC 302 on

Saturday rocking one of I imagine dozens

of his NBA memorabilia Eric Nicki how's

it going what's up Shaq how are you

brother good good uh the Vancouver

Grizzlies one is still the best item

that you own I just want yeah that was F

that was dope what's your how

legitimately how many like NBA related

clothing do you have in your closet oh

quite probably like 20 or 30 items uh so

this was a Charles Oakley I was gonna

rock this one and then I have a Rangers

hockey jersey with Strickland on the

back for for the because they're still

in the playoffs I figure I'll rock that

one while I'm out there I think Ariel

helani will enjoy the New York Jersey

100% 100% have you worned this while

talking to him no nothing yet no make

sure to bust that one out um hey we've

got uh Sean Strickland fight coming up

um at least the rhetoric going into

these is always violence he said on UFC

embeded that this will be a bloodbath to

the death is a bloodbath to the death in

Eric nix6 game plan this time around

never is I want a clean kill man you

know never is but um again like you

coach to your fighter uh their skill set

um so I guess when you when you have a

guy like Sean Strickland that's usually

the uh style of fight you're going to

get yourselves into you know but um for

us having that that five rounder I think

it definitely favors Us in the cardio

element so um I like to see sea push the

pace with rounds four and five and try

to get him out of there so you know the

five round non-title comain events is

something we're seeing pop up more and

more in the UFC there doesn't quite seem

to be a Rhyme or Reason as to when it's

implemented do you know at all what went

into the decision of making this a five

round fight no clue yeah yeah was no

clue like and and then so when when I

got the news um from Lance our manager I

was like I was like so is it three

rounder or five rounder he's like it's a

three rounder and then you know then I

talked to Mick and Mick's like no it's a

five rounder and then I was like yo do

you know and then they were saying that

you know when you even even for the

corner you should get four four in the

corner for a five rounder they're like

no it's only three I was like no if it's

a five rounder you get four in the

corner so we were going back and forth

with that too so um yeah it was up in

the air but if I had my choice yeah I

would say five round for the style of

fighter that Shawn is that's interesting

that you say that I I know one thing um

our mutual friend Luke Thomas has

brought up a lot is the toll that these

five round fights take on a Fighter's

career in totality now obviously like

you said it benefits Sean style but are

there any concerns about his longevity

when he's in there and you know Sean

he's like a long game fighter anyway

when he's in there for so long so often

I would say if if your fighter tends to

take so much damage damage throughout

those throughout those rounds or those

fights but um as we know like Sean's

really predicated off his defense and he

doesn't take a whole lot of damage you

know throughout those five rounders and

[ __ ] even even in his sparring you know

he's not getting hit a whole hell of a

lot at all so with that being said I

mean it definitely I think favors our

style more than anything but I can

imagine like if you're you know Justin

gatei and you're having these five round

Wars yeah of course man like it's going

to take a toll on anybody but thankfully

I think stylistically you know Sean's

pretty good at keeping himself clean

throughout that those five five rounds

now uh the sort of duality of a

defensively mindful style is that

sometimes it can be hard for the judges

sitting ringside to call it correctly

obviously that was a big point of

contention in the drias dup fight now we

can't go about changing overnight the

way fights are scored or who is judging

the fights so I am curious from your Ang

from you know from your role in it what

amendments do we have to make to Shan's

style to better solidify some of these

rounds that the judges May perceive as

close uh that's a great question bro you

hit it on the head I think you just have

to give more um scoring elements more

things for the judges to be able to see

you know you know Shawn is so predicated

off his lead side and his lead hand um

and you get a death by a thousand paper

cuts you almost kind of get lulled to

sleep by the same offensive action over

and over and over so you know in the

drus fight I think there was a lot of

things we could have done better I think

we could have implemented some more

kicks some more teps um the one thing

that really stood out to me was you know

when we hit the switches on the ground

instead of getting up and popping right

back up there was an opportunity for us

to lay some grounded pound on them you

know so there were some things I think

we could have done better and and uh you

know and to try to to try to change the

fact that we have these close split

decisions you know even going back to

the Chris Curtis fight and Brendan Allen

very close I felt like felt like we had

that fight one but again there was areas

I think we could have done some more

things offensively that the judges could

have taken uh in consideration in their

scoring

criteria now rightfully um there's been

so much praise heaped upon your gym and

the coaching staff there but I do see a

through line that I find amusing and

that's kind of the Underdog Story

obviously Shawn was a big Underdog when

he fought Izzy uh Francis enanu was a

Colossus Underdog against Tyson Fury

even Chris Curtis coming into this fight

unranked taking on a guy like Brendan

Allen to the Limit who many perceive to

be on the route to a title shot do you

get a kick out of sort of defying

expectations as frequently as your gym

does uh absolutely and I I love that I

love that Underdog mentality that we

have you know and um you know guys that

you have been in the room and seen the

room and been to the practices know how

we feel about that and we welcome that

you know and I want people to doubt us I

want people to say you know what we're

not capable of but they understand what

we're doing in here and how we're

evolving and how we're getting better

you know it's definitely that cliche

saying that iron sharpens iron man I

looked around the room last week and I

had you know six former world champions

in our Gym training and and you know

it's it it makes us all better you know

so I love that I love that mentality and

um you know one guy is pushing the other

and you know it's a it's a it's an

individual sport once the cage door

closes but we're we're a big team and we

take care of one another uh coach

hydration is very important correct yeah

big time so Sean took issue the the fact

that I have like a daquiri cup filled

with water at my desk at all times do

you want to also strip down my character

right now I would never do that to you

bro I'll never do that to you hey as

long as you're drinking water man I

don't care what it's in bro my wife

insisted on getting one of these like we

have nowhere to put it so I guess I'll

that's awesome with me that's great hey

what what's like the can you give me a

quick tour guide if you're actually

trying to see Vegas and not you know

lose all your money and morals and Val

at the strip like what do you actually

do in Vegas to have a good time for like

the long timer yeah like you know for me

I'm out in Green Valley like Henderson

area there's a lot of like local um you

know Mom and Pop SP uh restaurants and

and uh bars and places that you can go

and hang out and you know give back to

the community and and support local

businesses man I'm I'm big on that stuff

the coffee shops um a couple of my

family friends own like little

restaurants in in this place called the

District so you know we'll go we'll go

pop around there and and and try to try

to you know put money back into our

community of people that we know and

stuff like that rather than the big

corporations I guess so um but yeah very

very rarely do you find us like out on

the strip it's just hard man I just I

hate to get down there it's it's so much

you know just you got to deal with so

much crap when you're over there so um

I'm usually staying close to home yeah

if I can get away during International

fight week I'm going to try to for at

least a little bit

um where where I I've lost my here Eric

oh yes uh we you talked to the Schmo I

think about some of the dangers that

pooc Costa uh presents particularly when

he can back you up against the fence and

start unloading the speed with which he

uncorks those kicks obviously I know we

can't talk about everything but where

are some of the Avenues you think Polo's

going to struggle the most in this

fight um I I think just I think to me

the cardio element you know I think the

pacing um Sean dictates a certain type

of pace and I think you know even even

Izzy said that after the fight it was

just it was hard to get a rhythm it's

hard to get a read on him especially the

first time you've ever been in the cage

with him so it takes a while for a lot

of guys to feel comfortable like Johnny

edin said it the best like you know

Johnny the first three or four times he

sparred him he's like oh my God this

guy's overwhelming but it takes you you

know a number of opportunities to start

to get a rhythm with him and then once

you do you know you understand kind of

what you're getting so um a lot of that

for me is just is is to lean heavy on

that lean heavy on his awkwardness and

try to maintain that pace and pressure

and stay in Paulo's face and really stay

out of that kick Range man because you

know cost can throw him up there pretty

quick um there's a lot of movement

happening at middle rate right now DDP

appears to be on the verge of signing or

announcing a title fight it seems like

we're just waiting for some loose ends

there Robert Whitaker versus Hamza

chimaya is one of the main events this

month that is supposedly a title

Eliminator so it seems like there's you

know the middleweight

title schedule is filled out for a

little bit do you think Shawn takes

another fight if he beats Paulo or is he

G to wait this

out um I mean he's a prize fighter it's

hard to keep him you know not busy like

for for sea and um I know the UFC took

care of him you know he got the the deal

that he wanted so he's gonna you're GNA

See Shawn fight no matter what that's

just always been his mentality

he hasn't been a guy that really was

chasing for the title he was just

chasing the opportunity to fight more

often um the title helped put him in a

position of stardom um I think the UFC

has realized what his value is and his

worth so um you know Sean wins this

fight if he's if he's in the title pict

or not or if he's in the title

soon I'm I'm I'm actually really glad

you brought up the value that the UFC uh

seas in Sean because there's one sort of

like narrative going around nothing

concrete obviously but I want your take

on this how much truth do you think

there is to the narrative that despite

the UFC and Dana being very Pro speech

they might not want someone like sha as

UFC champion who's obviously a little

hard to control in the uh press

conferences and attracts a lot of

different kinds of

attention I don't know I couldn't tell

you I'm not I'm not behind those scenes

the conversations that I've ever had

with Hunter and Dana they've always said

they loved sea you know but this is well

before he won the world title but you

know they've always loved sea in his

approach to the game but uh I can see

that you know being a company owned by

Disney like some of the things that Sean

says might ruffle some feathers up the

chain you know so um but to me that's

that's credit to the UFC that they're

not going to put a muzzle on their guy

you know um I don't know man I I don't

I've heard that back and forth

especially when we fought in Canada you

know but I don't really like to fall

into those conspiracy theories man

because there's nothing you can do about

them and it just drives you crazy when

you think about it over and over at the

end of the day man you go out there and

win the fights knock dudes out then

there's no there's no conspiracy theory

you just got to win the fight I was

watching UFC embedded and uh you know

Sean's out here teaching his puppy how

to swim is Sean's Tri to big

softy yeah course man he's he's a big

old softy bro like 100 per. yeah um you

know that's that's the thing with him is

just keeping his Edge and and all the

while you try to refine them a little

bit better too as you as you as you you

you hang out with them more and more so

uh his his girlfriend KJ has definitely

been a huge godsend to to Sean and his

life um I think between myself and KJ in

the gym and Danny Davis and a bunch of

us you know we don't want to turn this

dude soft we have to keep his edge of

course but um it is nice to have a

little bit of refinement when it comes

to Sean it's that's quite a delicate

Balancing Act but it seems like you guys

are doing a good

job um very quickly and I apologize for

the change in tone I was wondering

obviously uh France

is going through a difficult personal
