Transcripts
today I want to share the very specific
ways of how I turned photography into my
career all the first steps and the first
processes and some of it's controversial
so some of you watching might not like
what I have to say but I came with
receipts to back it up and if you know
anything about me I don't like being the
same as everyone else
[Music]
as is the same for any profession learn
the basics exposure aperture ISO
composition and lighting and editing
don't discount editing and don't
desaturate all your greens okay in the
beginning I practiced this by taking my
camera to every single event with my
friends and photographing everything
that happened because they knew me as
the person with the camera they started
asking me to photograph their families
photograph their engagements photograph
anything which in turn gave me more reps
in practicing photography learning the
basics and sharing my work on Facebook
at the time Facebook do not discredit
the basics because you will be carrying
those basic skills and that Foundation
of your photographic skill set
throughout your entire career never
discredit revisiting those basic skills
so that you can use them to compound
into more diverse skills later now
here's the controversial one
shoot for free
now I know what you're thinking that's
like creativity business 101 mistake
yes I said it shoot for free friends
family any chance you can get bring your
camera to events ask people to shoot
their portraits to shoot their
engagement sessions maybe even to shoot
their weddings whatever it is just get
out there and start building a portfolio
I went out to Utah with my family to
visit some friends and their family and
I was like hey they live in Salt Lake
City we're two hours from the Bonville
Salt Flats you want to go to the Salt
Flats we do a session with the two of
you at Sunset you've never been there
yet could be really cool let's just do
it now as we were approaching it we were
seeing all these crazy clouds in the sky
and then we realized there was actually
a wildfire on the Nevada side of the
border and all these smoke clouds were
billowing over the Salt Flats creating
this like insane Mars looking scene we
were like some of the only people out
there that evening and I got these
insane portraits of Matt and Megan on
the Salt Flats and I went really
artistic with it busted out the 135
prime lens got this crazy compression of
them running at each other and this
Golden Light and I planned I talked to
my friend Emily who had a faux floral
business and she gave me two bouquets to
kind of feature in the shoot as well so
partnering with somebody in the industry
already and trying to get another
portfolio piece to extend what I'm
capable of doing and show to potential
clients what I am capable of doing as a
photographer during blue hour I got the
silhouette shot of the two of them on
the Salt Flats and then the next day
when we went to a cabin in Park City the
stars were abundant so I grabbed my tilt
shift lens and a tripod and went outside
and got a long exposure for the second
exposure on that double exposure and
became one of my biggest standout
portfolio images it was all because
shot for free does that mean that I'm
telling you to always shoot for free of
course not that's not a sustainable
thing to do nobody can just work for
free all the time but you have to be
strategic in your creative
entrepreneurship to see when it's
appropriate to do so how you can fill
your portfolio with stunning images that
prove to potential clients that you are
capable of doing these things and speak
to the people who love that style as
well
I can't see you guys
make a website your Instagram and your
Tick Tock are not enough why a website
shows professionalism and conveys to a
potential client that you are a
professional that you know what you're
doing you have a body of work to stand
on sure there's plenty of people that
would argue that you could just do it
through social channels these days and
yeah you could probably build a whole
business like that but you're not going
to land the super high-end clients or
ones where eventually are going to be
paying thousands and thousands of
dollars for your work without having a
portfolio and a place to house
everything if you're not doing it you're
just losing out on the chance of SEO
search engine optimization so getting
blog posts out there with Google search
and finding new people that way you
obviously don't want to overwhelm
yourself with all the channels that you
have going on showcasing your work but I
would argue that a website is the best
place to have a foundation in your
photography and I am the typical
stereotype I haven't updated my website
and I don't even want to see how long
I'll be doing that for this video so you
can see by the end do a couple new blog
posts of some of my most recent work
that I'm proud of and I feel like will
attract clients that I want to be
booking in the next three years get a
photo delivery service in the same way
of building a website this is going to
up the professionalism this is going to
let potential clients know that you're
serious about this that you are a
professional because the experience of
getting your photos through that kind of
platform versus something like Dropbox
or Google Drive is going to be a world
of difference they get to view and star
and favorite and download and order
prints all through one place plus you
could show potential clients what a full
Gallery looks like outside of just
specific images from a blog post they
can get the expectation of this is the
volume of photos that I'm going to
receive as a client and it's going to
convey to them well this is how the
experience is going to be as well don't
discount how much you could make in
print sales you're just leaving money on
the table if you're sending a Dropbox
link because you have this whole
platform that just makes you money you
set up discounts you set up automations
through I have pick time it will just
send them email emails and they will
order prints their family will order
prints I just had a 784 order come
through from two months ago just out of
the blue something else I absolutely
love about picktime is that they're
always updating new things within their
services so they created slideshows not
that long ago and now they're doing blog
integration so you can create your own
blogs through their service if you
already have them you could just start
using this if you don't have them this
will be included in your plan it is
insane I've already started using it for
new blog posts that I'm going to be
featuring at the end of this video it's
insanely easy they throw it all together
for you you can add in lines of text
wherever you need it all you have to do
is there's like three templates of how
you want a Blog to look and then you can
customize it from there you could do
different colors you could add in text
you can reformat images you could do all
sorts of things or you can make it as
simple as you want plus they do
integrated stories like if you want to
share that you did a new blog post you
want to throw it on your Instagram
stories make a tick tock it just makes
it for you recently I've been wanting to
feature more of my film photography work
on my website so I I utilize this new
feature through picktime check out the
blog post that I made with this new film
work and it's going to be going up on my
site now so it's really super easy less
than half of a day of work if you're
interested in signing up for pick time
you can get a bonus month if you use my
code all caps Eric flowberg with any
paid plan so check it out it's the first
link in the description thank you pick
time for sponsoring this video share
your work everywhere Instagram Twitter
Tick Tock YouTube submit to blogs try to
get featured photo contests anything to
try to get your foot in the door of
getting in front of new eyeballs all of
that stuff is free and I know it might
feel overwhelming to try to do that but
it doesn't all need to be up once curate
stuff over time and slowly roll it out
just so you could try to get it in front
of people who may have never seen your
work before it's free marketing as is
right now and maybe you consider later
on once you have a budget you have more
money to spend for marketing you could
do some paid ads do those platforms but
at the very least they're free and you
might as well just put your work out
there I can't tell you how much I've
grown in my career by just posting on
Instagram and YouTube and even Twitter
now and connecting with new people that
I never imagined I could have and giving
opportunities I never dreamed of even
outside of wedding and portrait
photography but that never would have
happened if I didn't start with my
cringy dad personality and actually
click post just don't let it rule your
life okay okay
serve your clients and I don't mean just
show up on time deliver the adequate
amount of photos or just be generally
Pleasant that's the bare minimum I mean
hold their hair back if they are
throwing up go to the corner store and
get them a couple bottles of water if
they need it give them a bear hug if
they're grieving or stay an hour and a
half later to possibly photograph
Grandpa for the last time in his life
don't be like everyone else experiment
Tinker try new things don't just consume
get bored and make some stuff of your
own and once you start making your own
photographic voice lean into it go get
them
