Outlines
๐ Starting Fresh with SEO in 2024
The speaker begins by stating it's 2024 and they are starting a new blog, despite having many already. The video's focus is on fresh SEO strategies rather than recovering traffic, as SEO has evolved significantly. The old method of keyword stuffing is no longer practiced. The speaker emphasizes starting with a specific niche and understanding the target audience before delving into SEO tactics. They argue that SEO should be treated as a marketing tool rather than the core of a business, suggesting building the business around the audience and using SEO to connect with them. The speaker also stresses the importance of validating niche words to ensure the audience is actually searching for the content being provided.
๐ Crafting a Content Strategy with SEO
The speaker discusses the process of creating a content strategy with SEO in mind. They suggest starting with a specific story or topic, such as a location for a travel blog or a type of food for a food blog. The example of a photography blog is given, where the speaker would focus on their own experiences, like using a specific camera brand or type of photography. The goal is to pick one or two aspects to focus on and build content around them. The speaker also introduces the concept of a content style, which is a grouping of content that tells one complete story, aligning with the AI da funnel marketing principle. This principle involves teaching, getting interest, making people want a product, and then making them buy it.
๐ Keyword Research and Audience Engagement
In this paragraph, the speaker talks about finding blog post topics, both those that come to mind immediately and those that might not be as obvious. They suggest finding these topics by engaging with communities where the target audience is already present or by creating such communities. The speaker then introduces the use of keyword research tools like Key Search to find the correct phrasing for content ideas and to perform competitor analysis. The aim is to ensure that the content covers all aspects of the AI da funnel, from awareness to action. The speaker also discusses the importance of writing for the audience and not just for search engines, emphasizing the need for a natural writing style that avoids keyword stuffing.
๐ Writing Engaging Blog Posts with SEO
The speaker provides guidance on writing blog posts that are engaging and SEO-friendly. They advise against writing academic essays, diary entries, or text message threads, instead advocating for a conversational tone that is focused and on-topic. The speaker stresses the importance of satisfying user intent and providing unique content that is not found in the top search results. They also discuss the use of secondary keywords, the structure of blog posts with short paragraphs and relevant headers, and the inclusion of internal links to other content on the site. The goal is to keep visitors engaged and moving through the content.
๐ Building a Brand with SEO and Beyond
In the final paragraph, the speaker discusses the importance of building a brand that goes beyond just SEO. They talk about the use of schema markup to provide context for Google and the importance of having a strong about page that establishes expertise. The speaker also touches on the use of SEO plugins to optimize various elements of a blog post and the value of external links to show subject knowledge. They emphasize the importance of not just relying on ads for revenue but also considering affiliates, services, sponsorships, and owning your own products. The speaker concludes by advocating for an SEO strategy that prioritizes the audience and long-term success over quick wins.

Transcripts
the year is 2024 and I'm starting a new
blog not really because I have too many
blogs and I need to stop making them but
this video is all about what I would do
if I was starting over with SEO in
2024 now before you get your hopes up
this video is not an hcu recovery video
it's not about how to recover traffic
this is about how to start fresh cuz SEO
has changed a lot in recent years when I
started we were still kind of in that
keyword stuffing phase which I'm so glad
we moved away from so I'm going to share
my exact tips to get started now this is
probably going to be a bit of a longer
video cuz I want to go very in depth so
if you prefer to listen do remember that
I keep all my videos on a podcast feed
as well you can search she know SEO and
you can download and listen on the
go the very first thing I would do is
Niche down I would still Niche down and
that really just means having a specific
topic now I think that is true of any
business if I'm hiring a lawyer to do my
whittles I want a lawyer who does Wills
that is their specialty I don't want a
lawyer who specializes in divorce law
because that's a very different thing
the same goes for a chef I want to have
like five star sushi I'm not going to go
hire someone who's like who cooks ribs
they're just very different they're
great but they're very different once I
know my Niche then I want to figure out
my audience now you'll notice I haven't
really started talking about SEO yet
there's a reason for that I think the
best way to do SEO now is to treat SEO
as a marketing tool not as the
foundation of your business and all that
I mean by that is make your audience the
first thing make your audience that
Foundation of your business build your
business around your audience and then
SEO is really just a form of marketing
that's going to help connect you with
that if you are building for SEO versus
for your audience there's a big
difference and that is the old version
of SEO once I have my Niche and my
audience the next thing I'm going to
need to do is validate the niche words
and all I mean by that is figure out
what the audience is actually looking
for about the subject I've given this
example many times my old travel blog
was really like a living abroad kind of
site I consider it slow mad I don't
consider it digital Nomad I don't really
consider it xat either cuz I didn't
often like get visas I never got
citizenship but the term slow mad means
nothing so no one else knows that term
and so they wouldn't search for it so in
this way I'm really using FCO to
validate kind of my Niche and my
audience and really just connect the two
I'm not using it as the basis of
everything and I'm definitely not just
choosing a niche because there's a lot
of like blue keywords on key
search so what we want to do is figure
out what's kind of the first story that
we're going to tell what's the first
thing we're going to talk about in
travel it's typically a location and a
travel style maybe it's two locations um
in food it tends to be like a certain
type of food like maybe a dietary
requirement for food um maybe it's more
about like a season type of dish but
let's say we're doing a photography blog
I just got my very first like proper
adult camera that's not my phone and so
because of that let's say I'm obsessed
and I want to make a website about my
whole process then I need to figure out
my specific audience to figure out their
age stage their awareness of the camera
let's say I'm speaking to other true
beginners who just want to like kind of
learn the process of having a camera
then I need to figure out specifically
what I'm going to talk about because
photography has so many different
aspects so I have a Sony um it's an A7 C
camera and I know that like Nikon and
Canon and there's so many different
brands all of them are so different so
I'm not going to start a vlog that's
photography and I cover all of those
maybe I'm just going to cover this
specific type of camera maybe I'm going
to cover a specific type of photography
I have a dog I love taking photos of my
dog so maybe it's going to be more about
like animal portrait photography or
nature portraits or something like that
I'm going to pick one to two of those
and I'm going to build a Content styo
around them I have another video
explaining that in more detail but
essentially it's just going to be like
kind of a grouping of content that tells
one complete story those things need to
work together to help move someone
through a journey That's the basis of
the AI da funnel which is like a
marketing foundational principle that
basically just says you're going to
teach people get them interested make
them want the thing make them buy the
thing that was very reductive now
there's a lot I could talk about with
dog photography there's like how to get
them to pose train my dog with the
command selfie cuz I'm extra there's
getting the right lighting there's
dealing with your dog maybe breaking
your camera it could even be about dog
photography like underwater above water
in different locations all of those are
topic clusters so I'm going to pick a
couple but I'm really going to hone in
on one to start with and typically the
first one that you talk about should be
the thing that you care about the most
or know the best and that's because we
want to Foundation that is really built
on our expertise so in that case I'm
probably going to start with how to get
your dog to pose for things I have
trained my dog very well to be a little
model then I'm going to go looking for
blog post topics now some of those will
come off the top in my head because
there are things I can immediately think
of like training my dog to do the selfie
command or how to get your dog to look
directly at the camera without rushing
the camera cuz that was a big problem we
had but there's probably things I
haven't thought of because my level of
expertise means that I'm beyond that
issue so how do we find those well we
can find them basically wherever our
audience are go find communities where
your audience already are or create your
own like a Facebook group and that's
when we're going to add in some actual
keyword research with something like key
search that's where I'm going to take
all of those kind of content ideas that
I've had and actually start figuring out
the way that I should phrase them I'm
also going to do some competitor
analysis at this point to see if I've
missed anything that maybe I didn't
realize I need to talk about then I use
my SEO spreadsheets one of the
spreadsheets in the pack is the topical
maap 2.0 um and it basically like builds
your topic clusters and then you can
collapse them so it's not too crazy big
I'll find at least 10 keywords per
cluster of topics that way I really make
sure I have enough information I also
want to make sure that I cover all the
span of the Aida funnel in those topics
so for example most people will just
write informational posts and Google's
not loving informationon sites now this
does not mean you need to start an
e-commerce brand I see a lot of people
saying that that's not true but if
you're a business you will be selling
something so you're not just going to be
informational you're going to have some
posts that are going to be in that
desire and action portion of the AI
funnel maybe I'm going to sell an ebook
that I wrote about trading your dog
maybe it's a video course where I
specifically walk through like step by
step every bit of it with like helpful
training tips and so then that cluster
needs to kind of move people from being
aware that their dog should be trained
to sit all the way down to like here is
a course on how to like turn your dog
into a model this is like the doggy next
toop model Master Class if you want to
steal that go ahead I think that'd be a
very fun Master Class when I'm looking
for keywords I'm really looking to make
sure I have something that is an easy
enough keyword that I can rank for it or
even if I don't think I can rank for it
I do want to make sure that is relevant
to my audience for what they would
search if they were going to search that
and that's because no post exists in a
vacuum we really want to make sure that
we are showing Google our topical
Authority and our expertise and
sometimes that means writing on a post
that it's like way too hard to rank for
but it'd be weird if you didn't have it
I think of it like no job was going to
ask if I took Elementary School like
math if I learned algebra or basic
addition but if I'm going to go into an
engineering degree like they're they're
pretty sure I had that like I must have
had that someone else must have checked
and be weird if I hadn't done that so we
need to make sure we have some of those
posts that yeah maybe we can't rank for
but we've used the right terminology
we're going to internal link them it can
get traffic in other ways andul Ely its
main point is to build our Authority so
I'm basically looking to see what's the
structure of the keyword should I phrase
it differently I'm going to try and pick
whatever has the highest volume and to
some extent a lower difficulty score if
it seems relevant to non- topic I'm not
going to make it a more Niche post just
for the sake of like what might be an
easier keyword because I'm really
focused on my audience and my content
plan and if that like more Niche keyword
would vary it for my audience and make
it less helpful not going to brisk it
now it's time to write some posts but
there are some things we're not going to
do we are not going to write an academic
essay we are not going to write a diary
entry and we are not going to write a
text message thread this is a blog post
and blog writing is very specific we
really want to make sure it's like
having a conversation with a friend but
that that is not a conversation you're
having with me as a friend cuz I have
critical ADHD according to my therapist
and psychiatrist and my convers ations
are unhinged and all over the we want a
very very focused blog post that stays
on topic and satisfies the user intent
immediately there is no perfect formula
for a blog post please stop asking
anyone to tell you the exact number of
keywords the exact length the exact
number of headers because what you're
doing there is again turning things into
a formula which Google does not like I
can give some very general rules use
your keyword at least once make sure
that your blog post answers the question
fully I don't really recommend doing a
blog post under a thousand words rarely
the situation calls for it but it is
rare there are definitely some rules not
to do do not keyword stuff your headers
do not keyword stuff your alt text do
not be like throwing 500,000 secondary
keywords in there instead you really
just want to make sure that you're
answering the question immediately you
are including something unique you want
to include something that no one else in
the top 10 has and not because it's
something unhinged you just want it to
be something unique what I'm finding
more and more is when forums and things
are outranking people it's because they
share a new piece of information
unfortunately even if it's
misinformation I then include about 5 to
10 secondary keywords that are related
to the topic and a lot of times those
are going to get added in pretty
naturally I would also make sure your
paragraphs are short you break up your
sections with relevant headers that
again are not keyword stuffed and make
sure that every single blog post has a
conclusion that sends people to
something else a lot of old SEO was very
like firstclick focused I don't want
someone coming to my site for one click
and then diping I don't really care how
many people first come to my site I
guess I care about the overall number of
people on my site this is a gripe I have
with medine that's very sessions focused
I carear way more about page views I
want someone to stick around for a long
time on my site and view multiple pages
I don't just want like a bunch of random
people coming once and then never
showing up again and one of the best
ways to do that is internal linking
which leads us to the next
section I make sure every blog post has
relevant internal links that have
different acor text and that's because
naturally we are going to vary the way
that we talk about things but also we
want to make sure we are referring to
things now you'll notice in many of my
videos even throughout the video I refer
back to other videos to other articles
I've written to other experiences or
other things I've done and that's
because it's natural for humans to do
that the same is going to go for your
blog posts you really want to make sure
that you're referencing other works
you've done throughout the post itself
but it'd be weird to always use the same
language but to finish off every post I
really recommend a next step in that
Journey again think of the Aida funnel
what is the next step building them from
awareness all the way down to action
where are they at in the journey what
can they do next it'll get them closer
and closer to that action step I'm
definitely still including external
links but I'm very picky about that them
I don't just do it for the sake of it I
want to make sure that these are
genuinely helpful sources usually these
are an education source for an
organization and I'm kind of doing I'd
say about three on average minimum but
that's an average minimum because it
does vary based on the
post backlinks still matter but they're
very different I shared my entire
backlink strategy last week so go watch
that video if you missed it but
essentially I'm treating back links like
PR more than to get Lake juice so
basically I'd figure out a Silo I'd
write a couple topic clusters to
completion to me a silo has to have at
least 20 posts a cluster at least 10 so
then you're probably somewhere around
like 30 posts total at that point I'm
internal linking within the Clusters and
even like throughout the silo I also
link back to that navigational Silo page
I have a video on how to set those up if
you guys want to go watch that and i'
probably link back to that page about
50% of the time from content with in
that
Silo I'm only writing about things I
have experienced in expert peace with
and that does mean that there are some
topics I can't cover now I'm going to
try and do my best to get that knowledge
if I can especially if it's like really
integral to the site but I'm not going
to like pretend I'm a dog trainer for
this dog site I'm not going to pretend
I'm some sort of like National
Geographic photographer and can talk
about getting your photos in there cuz I
can't I'm going to stay in my Lane
because that's where I'm comfortable and
it's where I can actually help people
the most and if I need to go outside my
Lane I will consult expert sources and I
I will do interviews because that is a
much better way to bring in that
information I'm also going to make sure
that I am setting up schema on my
website schema is basically just like a
type of code that really adds kind of
context for Google most people are using
schema without even realizing it and
that's because schema is in the base
code of basically like any WordPress
site so it's going to say that your
image is an image it's going to say your
text is text it's going to say your
header is a header but there's extra
things we can add
so with rank math I add in author schema
and I also make sure I use same as
schema and that's really going to tell
Google hey that Nina on YouTube is the
same as the Nina of sho's SEO and I'm
going to make sure that my about page
has tons of relevant information about
that expertise and experience that I
have and shows all of those social
profiles I'll even link the places where
I was a freelance writer anywhere I had
an author profile anywhere I've been
featured basically I want it to be super
clear to everybody why I am the person
to listen to about this
subject now speaking of ranked math I
will use an SEO plugin like that to make
sure that my keyword is in my slug or
peral link it's in my meta description
and that my title is not over about 54
characters
long so at this point you have your
Niche your audience Avatar your content
stylos some topic clusters you're then
going to have a blog post that blog post
is going to have a relevant keyword in
the title somewhere in the post at least
once um it's going to have unique
experience in it it's going to get to
the point really really quickly there's
going to be at least 10 internal links
pointing to other content on your site
and for most posts one of those links is
going to point back to that Silo page
the posts are going to have a relevant
external link or to to really show that
you know the subject you've done your
research and if anyone clicked on to
your site at any different point to
understand who you are and really like
why you're the person to listen to it's
going to be so obvious to them you're
going do some PR to get some like more
awareness for your name and for your
brand cuz this is a brand and lastly
you're probably going to have some form
of social media I think the days of SEO
being truly social media free are kind
of gone and it's not that you need to
like have 100,000 followers on Tik Tok
or be like Mega viral on YouTube but I
do think having some even minor social
presence is very helpful now my
preferred social media kind of options
are YouTube and Facebook groups I would
even say YouTube is like less social
media and more another search engine but
essentially you just want somewhere else
that your name is out there cuz
realistically what brand is only in one
spot I would still do all of this with
my batch workor plan which really is
where like I theme each month so maybe
one month is going to be all about
finding keywords one month is about
writing one month is more about like
backlinks that's just the way my brain
works and I even find it helpful to like
theme different quarters of the year so
when I created the profitable part-time
blogger that was really like the system
I used to found it where the kind of
first section is setting up your
business and your mindset and getting
like kind of ready to run this then
there's the tech setup then once you
know all of that now it's time to get
your organic audience and that's really
like a three-month process to make sure
that you're writing SEO optimized blog
posts and growing your organic traffic
to attract that ideal audience then you
kind of need to wait till that's done
before you can go into Affiliates and
make sure that like okay now I'm selling
to that ideal audience if you don't have
an audience who are you selling to and
that's going to allow you to get to know
your audience and figure out really how
you're going to be able to sell to them
in the future with your own products
then we want to capture Community which
goes back to that idea of like not just
a first click we want people to come
back but we need a way to tell them
about our new blog posts or to keep them
in our sphere and one of the best ways
to do that is an email list an email
list is another traffic Source kind of
it's not an organic traffic Source
because no one just like stumbles upon
your email address like they need to get
on your newsletter somehow and that's
where we want to have like newsletter
optins on our website we can also do
things like being a guest on podcast
there are many ways to grow your
newsletter but newsletters are also one
of the best ways to sell so we want to
have that newsletter and Community ready
that way when we create a digital
product or have a service to sell or
even a physical product I guess if you
want to do e-commerce you can you just
don't have to then we have people that
are ready to hear from us that are an
Engaged community that trust us and want
to buy from
us now you might be saying Nina that
went off books from SEO that's not just
SEO and that's true because I do not
think SEO is just SEO anymore because
ultimately I think what Google is
telling us is that they want more than
just a niche site to me the difference
between a niche site and a brand or a
Blog is basically the same as someone
who's like buying a house to flip it
versus to live in they both might clean
it up they both might paint the outside
but there's a different like care and
attention going into it if you're just
trying to like flip it for profit versus
if you're building something that's
really going to like be the foundation
for your family so what I want to do
with SEO is build that Foundation even
if you move eventually you've still
built that like really homey cozy house
where you have like your besties over
your like that like house on the Block
that has parties all the time like I
don't know it's an introverts nightmare
so for me it sounds horrible but that's
still what we
want and ultimately with this strategy
we don't just have to rely on ads that's
another thing I want to build into this
where most other SEO strategies are all
about getting into an ad Network and
that is not my goal anymore I definitely
think it's a benefit and if you have ads
and are comfortable with that that's
great I still have ads on many of my
sites I like having ads on my site extra
money which is great but ads have
basically always been like the lowest
percentage of my revenue and that's not
because I don't make good money from ads
last summer in 2023 I had one site that
did
$7,500 from ads and that was its lowest
traffic Source just for that one website
so what I really think it's better to
focus on are Affiliates that don't have
a minimum traffic requirement or at
least not as significant of a minimum
traffic requirement one toone Services
which again no traffic requirement doing
any sort of sponsorship there's a
limited traffic requirement there Nano
influencers are a real thing and
ultimately owning your own product that
way you own your income and then you're
not relying on some magic number because
50,000 sessions 100,000 page views like
those are big numbers and you shouldn't
be waiting until you hit that to
monetize your
website so there you have it that is my
SEO strategy updated for 2024 it is not
a traditional SEO strategy it is very
much an audience first algorithm second
strategy and ultimately it's also kind
of a profit first strategy in the sense
that we're not just waiting around for
mediavine or Rave or monumetric or
whoever to tell us like hey you know
what you you're allowed to earn some
money come on over we want to say hey I
know my audience I am a marketer and I
am a sales expert and so I can sell to
my audience I can Market ethically and
by that I don't mean that you're like
some sort of scammy MLM thing I just
mean that you're able to sell your
audience solutions to what they need
I've been talking about my new camera in
this episode I actually asked a friend
to like just tell me what to get it took
me years to get this I would have paid
to consult with somebody who could have
just told me what camera to get and who
would do like a virtual walkthrough with
me of all the settings cuz I still don't
fully understand all of them not just
telling them like hey come buy 40 pairs
of leggings or something which like who
needs that how many legs do you have
you're helping them purchase something
that they need already want and just
need help actually like getting to the
point to purchase for or deciding on the
right one if you're looking to improve
your SEO I definitely recommend stepping
away from kind of the SEO goggles of
just caring about keywords of like
relying on an SEO plugin to like turn
green for those like check marks that
they have of just like relying on easy
keywords that are going to be an easy
win on relying on anything that is like
a quick win that doesn't benefit your
audience if it doesn't serve your
audience but it's a quick win it's
probably going to get you hurt later and
I have definitely fallen into that trap
before I think the best SEO strategy is
the strategy that like really sets your
business up for long-term success and
that does mean that you're probably not
going to hit like 100,000 page views in
3 months but it's probably going to get
you closer to those $100,000 months cuz
it's really building you those
communities that care about you care
about your business and that you care
about them which is the most important
part of this honestly now I covered a
lot in this video if if you have any
questions or you want some more
clarification please post in the
comments below there are no stupid
questions the only stupid questions are
the unasked questions because someone
else probably has it too as long as this
video was I was trying to be a bit brief
and not have y'all here for 3 hours so
there are probably some things that I
can give more information on but the
best way to get my exact SEO strategy
and to stay up to date as it changes is
to join my profitable part-time blogger
program my students there get my new
strategies before anyone else does they
get to see me testing things and they
get support on everything that they're
working on which often includes me
reviewing posts it includes challenges
to really help people grow and it
includes all the strategies I talked
about today in more depth with specific
lessons on how to do all the things I
talked about and it even goes into when
to do them how much to do before you
move on to the next B and exactly how to
do the calculations to make sure that
your business is working for you and for
your specific income and traffic goals
I'm going to pop a link to the
profitable part-time blogger in the
description so youall can check it out
I'm going to put up another video right
now on screen which is my new backlink
strategy and how it's changed I walk
through exactly what I'm doing now um
and I also share some of my favorite
places to actually get those backlinks
have fun with my new SEO strategy and
really changing your focus for your
marketing to be audience first algorithm
second and I will see you next Thursday
with another video bye
