Transcripts
Hello again! In previous videos I had taught you
how to make bibliographic citations in APA Standards. I also showed you what the rules were
for making the citations according to the number of authors that the document that was citing had.
Now I will show you how to make the bibliographic references, so let's get to work!
The first thing we are going to do is get a document to cite, so I am going to
quickly search for a document in Google Scholar and on that document I will make an
appointment and we will start working. let's do it! We are here at Google Scholar. In this case I am going to look
for an article on cloud computing and I am going to select the first one:
a document published in an IEEE journal. I'm going to open it; here it is downloading
and once I download it we will see it. This document here has the information of the
author, the title, summary, here is the page, it has a little more information
and here from the entire document we will extract the information for both the citation and the
bibliographic reference. For example, look, in this part of here we have the name of the magazine.
To make the appointment I need a text. I'm going to say that the text that I want to copy is this one
here [Text selected in the document]. I'm going to copy it and we're going to go to Word to make a
direct quote because I don't want to start saying that with my words. I'm going to do it quickly because the
idea is in this video to learn to reference not to quote. For dating you have two other videos that
are in the description that I leave here below. We are going to go to Word then. I'm going to paste the text,
I'm going to increase the size a little so that we can see better and here is the text that I just copied.
So far it is a simple and vile copy this is illegal. When does it become legal? R // When I
quote and reference it appropriately. I'm going to count words: this text has 28 words, here
the word counter in Word tells me , so I'm going to make a direct quote of less than 40 words.
I'm going to enclose it in quotation marks because that's one of the norms for citations under
40 words. I am going to write something before the appointment to be able to say that I am writing,
then let's say that: «we are doing an example of bibliographic references» Here I have the appointment.
I have not finished making the appointment yet, this is the quoted text. I am missing the information of the author
and the year of publication. If we go quickly to the document we are going to extract this information.
In this part here in the document we are going to look for the year and the author: the author is Luís
Joyanes Aguilar; So the last name that we must mention is Aguilar and the year, let's see if we
have it available, where is it? I don't see it, here it is. In this case, somewhere in the document,
in this case in the header, we got the name of the journal and the year of publication,
so what I should put in the citation is Aguilar (which is the author's last name) and 2012 ( which is the
year of publication). So we go back to Word and finish the appointment. We are in Word and we are going
to put the information of the appointment. As it is a citation with emphasis on the text (I am going to do it like this
because it is a little simpler) I am going to put the respective information: «(Aguilar, 2012)» So far
I have only done the citation work: the bibliographic citations. Now what should we
place? R // The bibliographic references. If you just realized, with Aguilar (with
this last name) and 2012, it is a bit difficult to know which document I am talking about. This information
only serves to locate us in the reference. The bibliographic reference is responsible for
providing a greater amount of sufficient data so that the reader can find the document from
which you get the information you are citing; And it makes sense, only with Aguilar (the last name) and the
year is very difficult, but if we put a little more information it will be much easier for everyone.
So let's make the reference. In a separate section I will write the references,
the reference section. Here we have it. And in this section I must start with information
that depends on the type of document. There is some basic information that we must always place.
We'll see. As I show you in this figure, the information that we must always put is:
author information, the year of publication and the title of the document. How are we going to do
this in APA Standards? R // We will place the author information in the following way: first we are going
to place the last names of each author followed by the initials of the names of each author.
To place the author's information, we must first place the author's last name followed
by the initials of the name. If we have two authors, we will evacuate the information of
each author in their proper order: surnames and initials of the first author's name
, surnames and initials of the second author's name, and so on until you complete
the number of authors that your document has. After all that information from the authors, what
we must do after a period followed is, in parentheses, write the year of publication
and immediately after a period followed, we will place the title of the document. Remember:
this structure is the most basic of all, so we are going to fulfill this part in Word.
We are here in the document that we are building and I am going to put the surnames
that I have available, in this case I only have a surname in the document,
and the initials of the names. We have that information in the scientific document. Let's review them
again. We are in the document and if we go up to the top we have the name:
Luís Joyanes Aguilar, therefore the information that we must place is
«Aguilar» (which is the surname) and the initials «L» point (.) «J» period (.), followed by the
year. And we already know the year so let's look at how the reference is.
We are in Word. We are going to write then: «Aguilar, LJ». We already have the information
of the sole author of this scientific document. After the author we are going to place the year in
parentheses, in this case it is 2012. After the year we must put the title of the document. We go
back to the document, we copy the title and we bring it here. We are in the article,
we copy the title, we go to Word, we are in Word and now we are going to paste
the title of the document into the document. The copy is a little uneven. We just organize it.
And here is the minimum information that each document that we are going to cite and reference must have.
What is the usefulness of the reference and the citation? A // Let's look at it next:
In the appointment we had put the last name and the year. Assuming we have many
citations and many references, if we go and search for Aguilar we can see
that we have a quote or a set of citations that begin with Aguilar.
Additional we are going to see the year, and probably very few coincide with the last name and the year. So by
following the surname and the year of publication, we can know that the document that was
mentioned in the citation is the document that is specified in the bibliographic reference. And
this reference information is much easier to search to find the
document from which we get the information that we are citing in this part of here.
In the APA Standards, in addition to this information that we have just
placed in our bibliographic reference, you
have to place some extra data according to the type of publication you have found.
It is not the same to cite a printed book from a single printing to cite an article
that appears in a magazine that is published frequently or to cite an electronic article.
So I'm going to teach you three very useful basic structures for citing scientific articles,
which is what we are usually going to cite when doing our
research. In general, scientific articles and a bit of books
are most often cited , so let's see what the differences are between books,
magazine articles, and electronic articles.
In this scheme we can see three different types of references according to the
type of document that we are going to work with. When it is a printed book we must place, in
addition to the information of the author, the year and the title, we must place:
the edition of the book, the place of publication of the book and the name of the publisher.
When it is a periodic form, what should we do? Remember that the information of the author,
the year and the title should always appear (as you are seeing in this diagram). Now,
as it is a magazine article or a magazine document that is published frequently,
we must place: what is the title of the magazine,
the volume, the number and the pages of the entire magazine where the document
you are citing is located . We are not going to cite the entire magazine as such, nor the volume, nor the number.
We are going to quote from all that the pages where the document you are looking for is located.
On the other hand, if the article is electronic, it is published on a website,
in a database and it is not from a magazine or something similar, what we must place is:
the author's information, the year and the title (Remember: that always appears). But
we are also going to place: the consultation date and the link, link, url or link (there are many
ways to understand it) from which the author can download the article that you just cited.
So let's see. In this case, if we analyzed our document,
we had seen that the document was published in a magazine. This magazine is called:
«Magazine of the Spanish Institute of Strategic Studies». So we will use field
number 2, of scientific articles published in journals. The information that we must place is:
the title of the magazine, I am going to copy it from here; We do not know the volume, it is not published in
this document; the number, they tell us it is 0; and the pages, the first page of the whole magazine,
of the whole volume is 89 and the last page of that article, in the whole magazine is 112.
So let's put all that data in our bibliographic reference. Let's go
to Word. Here we have the reference that we were building. As it is an article published in a
magazine, we are going to copy and paste the name of the magazine. Volume we do not have any information;
we're going to leave it that way for now. We had the information of the number, which in this case is 00,
because the article is telling us. And the pages go from 89 to 112.
And as you can see this is a complete exercise that shows us how to cite,
in this case a direct quote (because it is verbatim or literal according to the original document),
with emphasis on the text (because the text appears first and we are not giving
importance to the author) and it is less than 40 words (if we count them it has 28 words so it is
less than 40). We have the citation correctly made and the bibliographic reference also very well
done. With all the information that we got from the document that we have just consulted,
this is all the procedure you must do to complete a bibliographic citation
. Not only is it enough to cite but to place the bibliographic reference.
In the next video I will teach you how to make citations and bibliographic references in a much, easier
way, much simpler. All this I explain to you so that you understand what is the reason in
case the other tools fail and you know what to do. But in the next video I will explain
how to use Mendeley, a very useful bibliographic manager to work in a team, upload
documents to the cloud, make citations and references with a very useful automated process. So to
subscribe to the channel please enable the bell for the notification
reaches you, tell me in the comments below what you think of these videos.
Have they served you? How easy is it to make appointments? It's hard? Tell me what you want
me to explain to you in other videos. Like. You like all that because you are
learning a lot. And share with all the academic community
that you can because we can all learn to investigate in an easy and simple way.
See you in the next video. Remember: Mendeley. Bye. A hug.
