Transcripts
Hi! Welcome back to this channel.Ā In this video lesson edition,Ā Ā
we will try to explore the relationshipĀ of the human person and the environment.Ā Ā
As you may already know, human beingsĀ need to interact with the environmentĀ Ā
to obtain food, water, fuel, medicines,Ā building materials, and many other things.Ā Ā
Advances in science and technology have helpedĀ humans to benefit from the environment. However,Ā Ā
along with drastic changes and developments,Ā Ā
humans cause tremendous pollutionĀ and various environmental damage.
In environment philosophy, human personsĀ are made aware of the natural environmentĀ Ā
and their place within it.
Environment philosophy is the disciplineĀ that studies the moral relationshipĀ Ā
of the human beings with theĀ environment and its non-human content.
It is always argued that the human personsĀ are above all creatures because we are endowedĀ Ā
with unique capacities and attributes.Ā Ā
But how can we utilize these unique potentialsĀ as we interact with the environment?
There are certain views that can helpĀ us to understand the human person'sĀ Ā
relationship with the environment andĀ they are; the anthropocentric view,Ā Ā
the cosmos centric view; and the theocentric view.
The anthropocentric view or anthropocentrism is aĀ philosophical viewpoint arguing that human beingsĀ Ā
are the central or most significant entities inĀ the world which gave them dominion over the earth.Ā Ā
This is a basic belief embedded in manyĀ western religions and philosophies.
Anthropocentrism regards humans as a separate fromĀ and superior to nature and holds that human lifeĀ Ā
has intrinsic value while other entities,Ā including animals, plants, minerals andĀ Ā
natural resources, are just resources that may beĀ justifiably exploited for the benefit of mankind.
On the other hand, the cosmos centric viewĀ indicates that human beings are a microcosm of theĀ Ā
cosmos or we are a small version of the universe.Ā Therefore, the universe is reflected in us.Ā Ā
What this means is that, when these naturalĀ laws and cosmic patterns are tampered,Ā Ā
the resulting imbalance will alsoĀ affect the balance within humans.Ā Ā
It is a vision of reality that places the highestĀ importance or emphasis in the universe or natureĀ Ā
as opposite to an anthropocentric visionĀ which strongly focuses on humankindĀ Ā
as the most important element of existence.Ā Finally, the theocentric approachĀ Ā
which refers to an understanding coming fromĀ a religious interpretation that human personsĀ Ā
are the stewards of God's creation.Ā This view pointed out that the center ofĀ Ā
all natural and supernatural reality is God alone.Ā All being, basically, initially and ultimatelyĀ Ā
focuses around and in the transcendent God andĀ finds in Him the ultimate purpose of existence.Ā Ā
To be theocentric means to live in a way thatĀ puts God at the center of life or makes him theĀ Ā
main focus of life. The theocentric view upholdsĀ the idea that human persons are stewards of God'sĀ Ā
creation. To steward something means to manage orĀ to put something under your care. It is importantĀ Ā
to stress this purpose of human beings in order toĀ prevent the tendency of interpreting the scriptureĀ Ā
as a welcome note to dominate and completelyĀ lord over the environment. At present,Ā Ā
we cannot deny the fact that human beings haveĀ caused terrible changes to the environment.Ā Ā
Human activities should be altered with moreĀ environment friendly undertakings. The impact ofĀ Ā
mining, water pollution, environmental disasters,Ā desertification, improper waste disposal,Ā Ā
soil erosion and overpopulation are allĀ results of thoughtless human activitiesĀ Ā
as they try to attain technological advancements.Ā If these circumstances will not be addressedĀ Ā
sooner, it may become too late for theĀ environment to recover. Thanks for watching!Ā Ā
