Q & A
What is the main topic discussed in the script?
-The main topic discussed in the script is the financial market's current situation, focusing on the relationship between the Russell 2000 and the Nasdaq 100, and the implications of this relationship for the broader economic outlook, including the concept of a 'soft landing'.
What does the Russell 2000 index represent in the context of the script?
-The Russell 2000 index represents small-cap stocks and is considered a rate-sensitive index. Its performance is indicative of the market's confidence in monetary and fiscal stimuli and its expectations regarding a potential 'hard landing' or economic downturn.
What is the significance of the Nasdaq 100's performance in the script?
-The Nasdaq 100's performance is significant as it symbolizes the rotation within the market from Big Tech companies to small-cap companies that had been lagging. It also reflects the market's sentiment towards a soft landing scenario.
What is the 'soft landing' scenario mentioned in the script?
-A 'soft landing' scenario refers to an economic situation where a country's central bank can slow down inflation without causing a recession. The script suggests that the market is currently pricing in this scenario.
Why is the yield curve's current state important for predicting economic conditions?
-The yield curve's state is important because an inversion, where short-term bond yields exceed long-term yields, has historically been a predictor of a recession. The script discusses the unusual duration of the current inversion and its implications.
What actions have the Federal Reserve and the Treasury taken that could influence the yield curve?
-The Federal Reserve has been gradually reducing its reinvestment in maturing securities, effectively tightening the monetary policy. The Treasury has been issuing a higher proportion of short-term bonds, which could influence long-term yields by not overcrowding the long-end of the curve with supply.
How has the Federal Reserve's asset composition changed recently?
-The Federal Reserve's asset composition has changed by reducing the amount it reinvests in maturing securities, moving from not reinvesting in all maturing securities to only reinvesting in a portion, thus draining liquidity from the market.
What is the significance of the Treasury's strategy of issuing more short-term bonds?
-The Treasury's strategy of issuing more short-term bonds helps protect the long-end of the yield curve from rising rates, which could otherwise increase borrowing costs and potentially lead to a slowdown in the economy.
What is the potential impact of the current yield curve inversion on the stock market?
-The current yield curve inversion could signal to investors that a recession might be on the horizon, which might lead to a shift in capital from stocks to bonds, negatively impacting the stock market.
How does the script relate the actions of the Federal Reserve and the Treasury to the concept of a 'soft landing'?
-The script suggests that the proactive measures taken by both the Federal Reserve and the Treasury in managing the supply of government bonds and the reinvestment of maturing securities could be contributing to the market's expectation of a 'soft landing' by preventing a sharp rise in long-term interest rates.
What is the potential implication of the current market situation for the upcoming U.S. elections in November 2024?
-The script implies that the current market situation and the actions of the Federal Reserve and the Treasury could be seen as politically influenced, potentially blurring the lines between fiscal and monetary policy in an election year, which might raise concerns about the independence of these institutions.
Outlines
📉 Market Rotation and Economic Indicators
The script discusses the concept of a 'soft landing' in the economy and the relationship between the Russell 2000 and the Nasdaq 100. It highlights the significance of market rotation from Big Tech companies to small-cap stocks and vice versa. The discussion also touches on the upcoming quarterly reports from major tech companies like Microsoft, Amazon, Meta, and Apple, and their potential impact on the market. The script further explores the market's anticipation of more rate cuts by the Federal Reserve this year, which has led to a stronger movement in small-cap stocks. Historical patterns and the current economic context are compared, including the potential for a 'hard landing' if the market starts favoring safe-haven assets over small-cap stocks.
📈 The Yield Curve and Economic Forecasting
This paragraph delves into the yield curve's role as an economic indicator, particularly the unusual negative spread between 10-year and 2-year bonds that has persisted for 25 months. It contrasts this with historical patterns where an inversion of the yield curve typically signals an impending recession within 12-18 months. The script also mentions the Federal Reserve's proactive measures to manage the economy and the potential reasons why a recession has not yet materialized despite the yield curve's negative spread. It suggests that the Federal Reserve and the Treasury's actions may have disrupted the yield curve's predictive power, and it speculates on the implications for the stock market and the economy.
🏦 Federal Reserve's Balance Sheet and Monetary Policy
The script examines the Federal Reserve's balance sheet, focusing on its reduction in reinvestment of maturing securities as a form of tightening monetary policy. It discusses the potential for this tightening to slow down and the implications for liquidity in the market. The Federal Reserve's fear of repeating past mistakes, such as the 1970s inflationary spiral and the 2019 liquidity crisis, is highlighted. The script also explores the composition of the Federal Reserve's assets, noting the predominance of long-term Treasury securities and the strategy behind this choice.
💼 Treasury's Role in Protecting Long-Term Interest Rates
The discussion shifts to the U.S. Treasury's actions and their impact on long-term interest rates. The script points out that the Treasury has been issuing a significant amount of short-term debt, thereby avoiding an oversupply of long-term bonds that could drive up interest rates. It suggests that this strategy, combined with the Federal Reserve's holdings of long-term securities, has protected the long end of the yield curve. The script also considers the potential consequences for the stock market and the economy if long-term rates were to rise significantly.
📊 The Manipulation of the Yield Curve and Economic Cycles
This paragraph explores the proactive measures taken by both the Federal Reserve and the Treasury to manipulate the yield curve in a way that has historically been unprecedented. It discusses the possibility of a 'bull steepening' scenario where short-term rates fall while long-term rates rise, potentially leading to a soft landing for the economy. The script also considers the impact of these actions on financial conditions and the stock market, suggesting that the current manipulation of the yield curve may have postponed a recession and supported a more optimistic market outlook.
🗳️ The Political Economy of Fiscal and Monetary Policy
The final paragraph touches on the political implications of the Federal Reserve and the Treasury's actions, particularly in the context of the 2024 U.S. elections. It raises concerns about the potential for these entities to engage in policies that could be seen as indirectly stimulating the economy to gain political favor. The script also reflects on the broader implications of the interplay between fiscal and monetary policy and the importance of maintaining the independence of central banks.

Fino a prova contraria soft landing
prossimi giorni arriveranno quattro
trimestrali delle 7 Microsoft Amazon
meta
e Ed Apple quindi m importante la
prossima settimana ma anche perché
appunto i mercati poi hanno spostato
proprio idraulicamente dei soldi da una
parte all'altra la rotazione evidente
2000 e perché ci furono investimenti in
infrastrutture nuova spesa pubblica
reflazione eccetera eccetera e allora
mercati finanziari Fino a prova
contraria fino all'ultimo fino a quando
non avranno evidenti segnali di
deterioramento del quadro macro di hard
landing vanno a puntare stanno puntando
sul soft landing e allora partendo da
questo concetto quale che quello che
potrebbe essere un nemico del soft
landing è la curva dei rendimenti che
stiamo di cui stiamo parlando spesso
ultimamente di cui sto scrivendo tanto
negli articoli negli ultimi articoli sul
Sole 24e di cui lascio il link in
descrizione dove approfondisco poi
questi e tanti altri temi il
differenziale 102 anni come possiamo
vedere è negativo da ormai 25 mesi dal
luglio del 202 2 e Sta per cominciare
agosto
2024 non era mai successo per un periodo
di tempo così elevato che questo
differenziale fosse negativo ovvero che
i titoli a 10 anni presentassero per
così tanto tempo rendimenti inferiori ai
titoli a 2 anni è normale l'inversione
quando una banca centrale per combattere
l'inflazione appunto alza i tassi a
breve quindi i tassi a 2 anni vanno su e
Torna nuovamente a normalizzarsi
ovvero I rendimenti a 10 anni tornano
sopra come normale che sia in tempi
normali appunto sopra quelli a 2 anni
mente statisticamente scatta proprio
l'ultimo conto alla rovescia verso
l'arrivo della recessione di lì a
qualche mese allora ci si chiede adesso
il mercato azionario sta scontando il
Soft landing sta puntando sul Russell
2000 e quindi sta mettendo le sue Fish
sul soft landing sta caricando le fish
su questo scenario altrimenti ripeto R
2000 non sarebbe così comprato e mentre
il mercato obbligazionario lato curva
dei rendimenti sta avvicinandosi a
segnalare un allarme di possibile arrivo
della
recessione perché appunto quando questa
curva storicamente si dis inverte è
accaduto accade proprio questo però ci
sono delle ragioni per pensare che a
questo giro della storia la Federal
reserve e il tesoro abbiano compiuto
delle azioni proattive che abbiano un
po' sfasato proprio l'andamento di
questa curva e abbiano anche inciso
positivamente Sul ciclo economico ed
potrebbe essere questo uno dei motivi
per cui la recessione tanto annunciata
tanto telefonata nel 2023 eccetera
eccetera non è mai arrivata non è ancora
arrivata Chissà se arriverà e quando
arriverà potrebbe arrivare anche nei
prossimi trimestri ma al momento non è
contemplato dai mercati finanziari
quindi noi ci atteniamo a questo non
essendo assolutamente veggenti perché
questa curva forse sta un po' perdendo
la sua capacità predittiva o comunque
perché sta segnando questo record 25
mesi sotto zero senza che sia arrivata
alla recessione E allora per cercare di
trovare questa risposta sono andato a
scandagliare in alcuni documenti e forse
meno meno lampante e probabilmente
disinflazione in corso e cominciò a
tagliare i tassi poi ci fu una seconda
Ondata quindi la fede teme una seconda
Ondata in stile anni 70 perché poi
mercato interbancario i tassi overnight
Addirittura superarono il 10% e non la
prese normale non la presero bene ai
mercati e la Fed dovete tamponare in
modo brusco quella situazione e quello
rispetto a reattività cioè Le banche
centrali stanno imparando a muoversi
treasury siamo a
eccetera eccetera andiamo a vedere
ancora più in profondità proprio il
bilancio della Federal reserve appunto
vedete i
4422
easing Cioè comprato davvero a valanga
titoli di stato sul mercato per
iniettare liquidità lo ha fatto
scegliendo la parte lunga della curva
tanto che oggi c'ha praticamente quasi
solo titoli a parte lunga e quindi
facendo questo la Federal reserve ha
protetto il rendimento del del decennale
perché lo detiene lo detiene in gran
a studiare leggere barra studiare perché
qui il livello è davvero alto di
approfondimento questo studio fresco
fresco luglio 2024
di due Appunto economie
appunto c'è Rubini e St stepen miran
Senior strategist questi esperti Rubin
lo conoscerete
Sicuramente hanno documentato un po'
quello che sta succedendo per quanto
riguarda le
emissioni del tesoro e questo grafico è
straordinario Dal mio punto di vista
vedete che la percentuale di Bills
quindi titoli a breve termine emessi
protegge avendoli in bilancio
a lungo
quanto naturalmente sarebbe dovrebbero
essere migliorano le condizioni
finanziarie e perché appunto i prestiti
momento bullish O
comunque meno peggio Insomma di quello
che sarebbe stato è stato proattivamente
innescato dalle scelte del tesoro di
emettere prevalentemente titoli a breve
termine e della Federal reser serve di
imbarcare un portafoglio pieno di titoli
a lungo termine appunto scelte proattive
5 e5 6% rispetto agli attuali tassi
della federo reserve il tasso a 2 anni
sarebbe già Positiva la differenza e si
sarebbe dis invertito e probabilmente ci
Fed avesse prima alzato i tassi poi
all'appello
titoli all lunga che vengono protetti
disin vertita e forse ci sarebbe stata
già una recessione con i decennali al 6
e mezzo eccetera eccetera Se non ci
fossero stati questi atteggiamenti
questi comportamenti proattivi e chiudo
mentre l'economia
americana cresce da 51 mesi consecutivi
bene Ho fatto un po' di studi e vi ho
portato questo questo materiale che
lascio in descrizione nel video se
questi contenuti vi piacciono e danno
valore aggiunto alle vostre analisi
eccetera eccetera Vi prego Ho visto
Buona domenica a tutti
