Q & A
What is the main issue discussed in the video script about the Shimano EP-8?
-The main issue discussed is the noise and clattering sound produced by the Shimano EP-8, which is known to be quite loud and can vary depending on the bike's geometry and the riding style of the individual.
What does the video suggest about the relationship between the noise level of the EP-8 and the bike's frame?
-The video suggests that the bike frame acts as a resonating chamber, similar to a guitar, which can amplify the sound coming from the motor, especially from the area of the crankset.
What was the first attempt made by the speaker to reduce the noise of the EP-8?
-The speaker's first attempt was to stuff the hollow spaces in the bike frame with a soundproofing material, specifically a type of laminate floor underlayment, to dampen the acoustic resonance.
Why did the speaker choose to use laminate floor underlayment as a soundproofing material?
-The speaker chose laminate floor underlayment because it is waterproof, which prevents mold growth due to moisture absorption, and it is thin enough to be packed into the small spaces of the frame.
What was the outcome of stuffing the bike frame with soundproofing material?
-The outcome was disappointing as the noise reduction was minimal and not significantly noticeable, leading the speaker to conclude that the soundproofing attempt was not very effective.
What alternative solution did the speaker consider after the soundproofing attempt?
-The speaker considered installing an O-chain, which is designed to eliminate pedal backlash, and changing the sprocket teeth count from 34 to 32, hoping it might reduce the noise generated by the motor.
What special tool is required for installing the O-chain on the EP-8?
-A special tool is required to remove the EP-8's battery cover and to install the O-chain, which the speaker had to purchase separately.
What was the speaker's experience with the O-chain after installation?
-The speaker found the O-chain to be a cool addition to the bike, providing a good feel even though it did not significantly reduce the noise level as expected.
What information did the speaker receive about the new Shimano EP-801 model?
-The speaker received insider information suggesting that the Shimano EP-801, launched in 2023, is likely mechanically identical to the EP-8 and will also produce clattering sounds, with the noise level depending on the bike's geometry and material.
What advice does the speaker give regarding upgrading to the new Shimano EP-801 model?
-The speaker advises against upgrading to the EP-801 as it will likely require replacing the entire electric system of the bike, including the motor, battery, and display, and may not fit the current frame due to slight differences in the casing.
What is the speaker's final conclusion about the noise issue of the EP-8?
-The speaker concludes that the noise issue of the EP-8 is not severe enough to warrant purchasing a new bike, and suggests waiting for Shimano to address the issue in future models, while referring to bikes with the EP-8 motor as 'clapper boxes' in the meantime.
Outlines
🔊 Shimano EP-8 Noise Issues and Solutions
The first paragraph discusses the common knowledge that the Shimano EP-8 can be noisy and clattery. The noise level is said to depend on the bike's geometry and the rider's style. A video is mentioned that explores this issue in depth. The narrator shares their personal experience with the EP-8 on their Santa Cruz Bullet, noting that the noise is amplified by the use of an external condenser microphone, which provides a cleaner, fuller sound compared to a GoPro. Attempts to reduce the noise, such as researching online and considering Shimano's statement about the mechanical nature of the noise, are detailed. The narrator also explores the idea that the bike frame acts as a sound box, and they experiment with filling hollow spaces in the frame with sound-dampening materials to reduce noise, without success.
🛠️ Addressing Noise and Chain Issues with the EP-8
In the second paragraph, the narrator recounts their experience with a warranty claim due to a broken part on the EP-8, opting to replace the part themselves to avoid a long wait. After addressing the noise issue by stuffing the bike's hollow spaces with sound-dampening material, they find the result underwhelming. They then consider the possibility of reducing noise at the source, the pedal crank, and explore the idea of using an Oh chain to eliminate pedal backlash, which is said to have made a noticeable improvement for another rider. The narrator also contemplates changing the bike's gear ratio and tests different chainring sizes, all while acknowledging the complexity and potential futility of these efforts.
🚴♂️ Reflections on Shimano EP-8 Noise and the EP-801 Update
The final paragraph reflects on the noise issue of the Shimano EP-8 and the narrator's unsuccessful attempts to mitigate it. They discuss the upcoming Shimano EP-801, suggesting that it is likely to have similar noise issues due to its mechanical design. The narrator advises against expecting an upgrade to solve the noise problem, as the new model will have different components, including the motor, battery, and display, which may not be compatible with existing setups. They conclude by questioning the severity of the noise issue and suggesting that it may not be a deal-breaker for most riders, while also inviting viewers to share any overlooked solutions in the comments.

Transcripts
mein ep8 bzw mein Santa Cruz Bullet
verbreitet viele Leute eben schon gesagt
einfach mal alles aus was man tun könnte
Bereich also würde das Geräusch quasi
aus diesem Tretlager seitlich vom
Fahrrad weggehen und halt eben nicht in
den Rahmen ich bin im Ganzen aber
nachgegangen und habe mir vorgenommen
eine Hohlräume im Fahrrad auch zu
stopfen musste dann allerdings damit
anfangen erstmal drüber nachzudenken
welches Material ich dafür nehmen denn
feuchte bzw schaumstoffartige weiche
Materialien funktionieren nicht weil die
einfach wegschimmeln würden weil die
eben Wasser saugt das heißt ich musste
einen Schaumstoff bzw Dämmmaterial
finden was wasserabweisend und was ich
allerdings keine Lust zwei drei Wochen
Geschichte interessiert dann schaut
Kettenblätter anbietet in verschiedenen
Schein einbauen bzw eure Kettenblatt
Spinne demontieren wollt braucht ihr
beim ep8 wieder ein sehr spezielles
Werkzeug wie soll dem auch sonst sein
also muss ich wieder 40 € ausgeben
dieses Werkzeug kaufen das ganze Ding
abmontieren wieder dran montieren alles
drum und dran und habe dann zeitgleich
auch die Kette getauscht weil ich mir
dachte die hat irgendwie im Finale die
Woche auch Geräusche gemacht ich habe
die nicht sonderlich gut gepflegt er
kommt einfach eine neue drauf sieht cool
aus und ähm eliminiert eventuell
Geräusche die nicht vom Motor kommen und
jetzt ist natürlich ab auf Trail und
testen
lauter also ein bisschen damit
klarkommen in den kommenden Videos
zusätzlich habe ich mich noch ein
bisschen erkundigt was den neuen Shimano
ep801 betrifft der jetzt im Jahr 2023
gelauncht ist und habe die interne Info
bekommen von einem Insider dass dieser
sehr wahrscheinlich
also ihr müsst im Prinzip alles was an
halt einfach Klapperkisten schreibt dazu
man hört egal was man irgendwie an
Rückschlag Probleme habt kauft gerne in
ciao
