The 5S Game (Lean Six Sigma)
Summary
TLDRThis video script introduces the 5S methodology through a fun game, demonstrating how to improve workplace efficiency. Participants are challenged to find numbers 1-49 in a cluttered environment, then progressively apply 'Sort' to remove unnecessary items, 'Set in Order' to organize items for efficient flow, and 'Standardize' to ensure consistency across facilities. The goal is to sustain these standards for continuous improvement.
Takeaways
- 🎮 The video uses a game to illustrate the principles of 5S in a workplace environment.
- 🔍 The game involves finding numbers from 1 to 49 in a set time, simulating the process of organizing a work area.
- ⏱ The challenge is to complete the task within a 20-second shift, emphasizing the efficiency aspect of 5S.
- 📉 The initial attempt is likely to be difficult, highlighting the need for organization in the workplace.
- 🗑️ 'Sort' is the first step of 5S, which involves eliminating unnecessary items, like removing numbers 50 through 90 from the game.
- 📚 After sorting, a second attempt at the game is made, aiming to improve efficiency by removing distractions.
- 📏 'Set in Order' is the next step, which organizes items for an efficient flow, like arranging numbers in a logical order.
- 🔄 The numbers are arranged from bottom to top and left to right, simulating a well-organized work environment.
- 📋 'Standardize' is the process of maintaining a consistent and logical order across all facilities, ensuring best practices are followed.
- 🔄 A final 20-second shift is conducted with the standardized setup, likely resulting in improved performance.
- 🔄 The video concludes with the importance of sustaining these standards and continuously improving, which is part of the ongoing process improvement.
Q & A
What is the purpose of the initial game mentioned in the video?
-The game is designed to help the concepts of 5S sink in more effectively by having participants find numbers in order from 1 to 49 within a 20-second shift.
What is the purpose of the 'sort' step in the 5S process?
-The 'sort' step involves eliminating unnecessary items in the workplace. In the game, this meant removing numbers 50 through 90 to simplify the task.
How does the 'set in order' step improve the process in the game?
-The 'set in order' step organizes items in the workplace for efficient flow. In the game, numbers are arranged from bottom to top and left to right, making them easier to find.
Why is the 'shine' step skipped in the video demonstration?
-The video skips the 'shine' step to focus on the immediate improvements made by sorting and setting in order. 'Shine' typically involves cleaning and maintaining the organized environment.
What does the 'standardize' step involve in the 5S process?
-The 'standardize' step involves organizing items in a standard, logical way across all facilities, ensuring consistency and efficiency.
What is the ultimate goal of the 'sustain' step in 5S?
-The 'sustain' step aims to maintain and continually improve the standards set in the previous steps, ensuring ongoing process improvement.
How does implementing 5S improve efficiency in the game?
-Implementing 5S removes unnecessary items, organizes the remaining items logically, and standardizes the layout, making it easier and faster to find the numbers in order.
What is offered to viewers interested in learning more about 5S and Lean Six Sigma?
-Viewers are offered a free Lean Six Sigma white belt certification course available at sixsigmasociety.org.
What is the significance of performing the task in 20-second shifts?
-The 20-second shifts simulate a real work environment where efficiency and quick access to necessary items are crucial, demonstrating the impact of 5S improvements.
What does the speaker mean by 'best practice way of organizing these numbers' in the 'standardize' step?
-The 'best practice way of organizing these numbers' refers to a standardized, optimal method of arranging the numbers that can be replicated across all facilities for consistency and efficiency.
Outlines
🕵️♂️ Introduction to 5S and Game Setup
The video script begins by addressing the audience's familiarity with 5S, a methodology for organizing and standardizing the workplace. It introduces a game to help reinforce the principles of 5S. If the viewer is new to 5S, they are directed to another video for an overview. The speaker also mentions a free white belt certification course available at the Six Sigma Society website. The game involves finding numbers from 1 to 49 within a 20-second time frame, simulating the process of organizing a workplace by eliminating unnecessary items.

Transcripts
so if you already know a little bit
about 5s this is a fun game to help it
just
sink in a bit now if it's totally new
we've got another video about 5s
that gives you a quick overview okay so
before we jump into the game here
let me mention if you're interested in a
free white belt certification course
you can access it at six sigma society
dot org
okay so i want you to imagine this
process that you have to perform
you're supposed to find numbers in order
from 1 to 49
and so on the next page you're going to
see a bunch of numbers and you want to
find
1 through 49 in that order and you've
got to do that in a 20-second shift
okay so let's go ahead and when i scan
the next slide we'll start the shift and
see how far you can get
okay so here we go
okay let's stop right there so how'd it
go
i'm guessing it didn't go as well as you
hoped it was pretty difficult to find
some of those numbers
let's do this let's start implementing
5s in our work environment
and we'll start by using sort so we're
going to use sort to eliminate
unnecessary items in the workplace so if
you recall in our process
we were required to find numbers 1
through 49
but in our work environment we've got
unnecessary numbers numbers 50 through
90.
so let's go ahead and remove those and
try
another 20 second shift and see how far
we get okay so we'll go ahead and start
now
stop so how'd it go was that any better
maybe a little bit but it's still not
good enough
okay so let's continue 5s and we're
going to use now
set in order so we're going to organize
things and items in the workplace for
efficient flow
and so here's how it's going to work the
numbers go in order
from bottom to top and left to right
so as an example number one is going to
be in the bottom left
number two is in the middle left and
number three
is in the top left so you've got racking
in place
in your work environment to set things
in order to organize it for efficient
flow
and let's see if that improves things
okay so we'll go ahead and start our 20
second shift
now
stop all right so think about how many
you got right i'm guessing it's more
than you got right
on the previous two shifts we're getting
better
but there's still room for improvement
though
and so we're gonna for now skip past
shine
and we're going to go to standardize so
what we want to do is order the numbers
in a standard way
and we want to ensure that they are
organized this way in each of our
facilities
and it's going to make sense when you
see the next slide and we
we do another shift but we've got a
standard
logical best practice way of organizing
these numbers
okay so we'll go ahead and start our
20-second shift and see how far we get
now
stop okay i'm guessing you didn't have
really any problem there
we sorted unnecessary items we've
removed the numbers that we don't need
we've set things in order to promote
efficient flow
and so we put racking in to make that
possible and then we use standardize
to organize the numbers on a standard in
a standard
best practice way and we applied that to
all of our facilities and now we're
going to want to do over time
is make sure we sustain these standards
so keep improving them
keep trying to get better that's part of
our process improvement process
so this is an example of how you could
use 5s to improve
a simple work environment so thanks for
watching
