Q & A
What is the main focus of the Top Spin challenge on day two?
-The main focus is to help participants develop a better forehand topspin by practicing specific exercises that enhance the feeling of spin and rotation off the forehand.
Why is it important to keep the palm down during the forehand swing?
-Keeping the palm down as long as possible helps maintain the topspin. Once the hand opens up, the spin is lost, which is referred to as a 'tweak'.
What is the significance of the push-up position in the forehand swing?
-The push-up position is the power position for a forehand. It allows for better impact and helps in generating topspin without the need to 'rist' or brush up the ball.
How can the net strap serve as a useful reference during practice?
-The net strap is about the height of a tennis ball, so it helps players aim for the correct height and be aware of their racket's position, preventing the ball from being hit into the net or with an open racket face.
What is the purpose of the 'click' exercise?
-The 'click' exercise helps players feel the impact of the strings on the ball, which is an indication of generating topspin. It involves a short backswing, hip movement, and a relaxed hand to create a clicking sound with the strings.
What is the Serena Williams drill mentioned in the script?
-The Serena Williams drill involves standing close to the net, ensuring the ball is below the net, and swinging up above the net to generate spin. It's named after Serena Williams, who used to practice this with Patrick Morago.
How does the 'triples' exercise help with adding spin?
-The 'triples' exercise helps players get used to adding different depths into the court, which is beneficial for spin as it allows for variety in shot depth and the ability to adjust hand and racket head speed according to court position.
What is the recommended number of repetitions for each exercise?
-For each exercise, it is recommended to do 10 to 20 repetitions to warm up and start feeling the spin.
Why is it crucial not to skip steps in these exercises?
-Skipping steps can hinder the development of muscle memory and the neural pathways necessary for fast and accurate execution of topspin under pressure. Following the steps ensures a solid foundation and builds confidence in the stroke.
How does the 'love story' analogy relate to the hand and racket during the swing?
-The 'love story' analogy refers to the idea that the non-hitting hand should guide the racket throughout the swing, as if the two hands are in love and always chasing each other. This promotes a smooth and connected motion.
What is the significance of staying connected during the swing?
-Staying connected during the swing ensures a fluid and powerful motion, which is essential for generating topspin. It also helps maintain control over the direction and depth of the shot.
What is the goal of the day two Top Spin challenge exercises?
-The goal is to build muscle memory and improve the feel of topspin through focused and regular practice, ultimately leading to more confident and effective strokes under pressure.
Outlines
🏸 Forehand Top Spin Warm-up Exercise
This paragraph introduces the second day of the Top Spin challenge, focusing on forehand exercises to enhance spin. The key points include maintaining the palm down during the forehand swing to retain spin, using the push-up position for power, and starting with shadow strokes to get a feel for the top spin without the ball. The exercise involves moving close to the net, choking up on the racket, and practicing the motion with minimal wrist involvement to ensure the spin is generated from the swing path rather than wrist action.
🤸♂️ The Click and Serena Williams Drill
The second paragraph details a specific exercise called 'the click,' which involves a semi-open stance and a short back swing to generate top spin. The use of the net strap as a height reference is emphasized to avoid hitting the ball into the net. The 'click' sound produced by the strings indicates a correct technique. Following this, the Serena Williams drill is introduced, which involves hitting balls close to the net to generate spin, with an aim to get the ball to rotate effectively. The paragraph concludes with a mention of the final exercise, the 'triples,' which helps practice hitting the ball at different depths to add variety to the spin.
🚴♀️ Building Muscle Memory for Top Spin
The final paragraph emphasizes the importance of consistent practice to build muscle memory for top spin. It explains that by following the steps and performing the exercises regularly, the nerve fibers in the body will become myelinated, allowing for faster and more accurate muscle responses. The paragraph encourages viewers not to skip steps and to master the feel of top spin over time, which will lead to more confident swings. The speaker also teases the next day's challenge with a single exercise.

Transcripts
welcome to day two of your Top Spin
challenge you are going to really enjoy
today's exercises because if you just do
them just 3 to five minutes I'm telling
you it just takes that amount of time
you show up early for your practice
match or your regular match or you stay
just a little bit late and you just do
this two to three times a week you're
going to start to feel a lot of Top Spin
A lot of rotation coming off your
forehand so a couple reminders from
yesterday just to remember number one
what's so important is that we want to
keep the Palm down as long as possible
as we're Hing a forehand right once we
start to open up our hand you're going
to lose all the magic of the Top Spin I
call this a tweak once the hand tweaks
the spin leaves the strings so what you
want to think about is if you just again
look at the top of your hand and as
you're doing Shadow stroke see as I'm
doing these shadow Strokes I'm focused
at the top of my hand see when I'm make
contact I should be able to see the top
of my hand I don't want to see the
bottom of my hand at all and then the
other thing that we want to think about
and I'll just give you one more reminder
from yesterday is that pushup position
so guys when I get down here and I go
like this and I can do a pushup I am in
the power position at a forehand that's
how we want to make impact you don't
want to be risting the ball to try and
make the Top Spin so it's all about the
swing path and these exercises are going
to help you really feel spin so let's
get into this so the first exercise
we're going to do is we're going to come
close to the net and we're going to put
our hand in that push-up position and
we're going to choke up on the Racket
and what we want to do is have the edge
leading slightly forward remember we
always want to be able to see the top of
our hand once we start to do this we
tweak we lose the spin so all we're
going to do this is show you that the
wrist does not really need to be
involved much at all is we're going to
come here we're going to sink our leg
below the net and we're just going to
rise up like this and then we're going
to put the ball in the way of that and
when we do that we can see that we have
Spin and that we're feeling the ball
rotate off the string so notice again
our hands below the net our legs are
bent and all we need to do is just lift
and keep our hand in the push-up
position without really doing much and
that right there that sensation is
adding a lot of spin I know if you can
hear that spin we'll show you from all
kinds of angles that just starting with
this exercise from here to here I'm
really not trying to add too much rist
I'm just basically going from here to
here staying in the push-up position
Believe It or Not arms pretty straight
out okay here down low and lift and
that's all you need to get the spin
going
again watch this guys from the back here
I'm bent I just lift up bend down lift
up push forward look plenty of spin look
how those balls are going in beautiful
rotation again all I'm focus on and stay
in the push-up position going down
lifting up zero tweak now now all you
need to do is about 10 to 20 balls of
that to warm up you should start to feel
the spin the next thing I want you to do
is something that I call a click okay so
interestingly enough this net strap
right is about the height of a tennis
ball so it's a good thing to aim for and
it also Keeps Us aware of the height of
our racket again when people start hting
topspin lots of times they either tweak
and it lifts open or they spin the ball
in the net because the racket is too
high on the ball having a net strap as a
reference really helps you feel that now
what we're going to do is now we're
going to get in the semi open stance and
as far as your grip goes this a review
from yesterday remember if we're like in
the Continental grip that's going to
enable us more to chip the ball it's
going to be harder you can manipulate
toss it's harder so the more you just
turn over your strings down you start
getting topin for free if you want to
know where most the pros are a really
easy thing to do is just to drop your
Racket and then pick it up and this is
the semi-western grip this right here
once you get the feeling of this it's
pretty hard not to get tosp it on the
ball as long as you're doing the steps
that I'm telling you to do so now what
we're going to do is we don't want to
take a big back swing we want to have a
nice short back swing again our Palm is
facing the ground and we can see the top
of our hand and what I'm going to do is
I'm going to the hip creates the whip on
pretty much every Power Shot so what I'm
going to do is I'm going to bring my hip
back and then push it Forward let the
hand relax and I want to make a clicking
sound with my strings and I want to
reach over the net as far as I can and
then over the shoulder and I want to
give it a sideways hello okay that's
going to be my shower stroke and I want
to catch the racket I want to use that
other hand as a guide the whole time I
like to call that the love story okay so
remember they're in love they're chasing
each other and through so what I'm doing
nice short back swing the hip creates
the Whip and swing and notice that I'm
creating this clicking sound if the
strings
click you hear that you're doing it
right if you get stuck if you feel a lot
of tension in the in the racket head
because because you get stuck that means
that you tweaked and you opened up and
now you're showing the Palm so what I
want you to do and I'll just show you
some here from the side and some from
the back is we're going to do another 10
to 20
clicks
one
2 three hear that
click
four five
5
6
7
8
9 10 and there you go you want to do 10
to 20 of those okay let me show you what
we're going to do next okay we're on
fire now now what we're going to do is
we're going to basically dis back a
little off the net this is kind of cool
we got the shade right here of the net
strap so getting about that far I call
this the Serena Williams drill because
she would do this all the time with
Patrick morago when they'd warm up and
she' just be close to the net and she'd
get that spin going so and you want to
make sure that the ball is below the net
and you got to swing up above the net
you're going to hit some balls in the
net which is okay but if you can get it
up and get that ball to rotate you see
you get great Spin and again you want to
do another 10 to 20 of those and you're
almost done your day two exercise now
the final thing we do I call these
triples so we can get used to adding
different um depths into the court which
is really great with spin because you
can add lots of different variety as far
as how deep you hit the ball and and
being able to adjust your hands and your
racket head speed according to where you
are on the court so the spin helps keep
a lot of these challenging shots in
without spin it'd be really hard to to
make these shots so what you're going to
do is you're going to get three balls
here three balls on the 10 under line if
you don't have a 10 under line just
imagine that three4 quart and then three
balls back here for your rally ball and
you want to do this about five sets so
here we go we're just going to go here
and we're going to go
one
two three okay so three nice tosp and
forand there then we're going to do
again we're going to come back here and
we're GNA
go one I didn't really stay connected
gotta stay connected better that ball
that's better
two three nice and then we're going to
come all the way back here and now that
we're back here let's work on our
crosscourt nice solid rally
ball
one two we need more
height that's a perfect ball so again
let's get that crosscourt rally ball
remember keeping your hands relaxed
keeping the Palm down getting under the
ball feeling the strings click the
tennis
ball good ball right
there very nice
shot
[Music]
so guys how easy and how fun is that
that is your day two toss spin challenge
just doing those exercises on a regular
basis in a deep focused way is going to
start to build that muscle memory which
if you've been following me it really is
about myelinating those nerve fibers and
so that your messages
throughout your brain through your
spinal cord down to your to your body
parts can shoot out those messages fast
and accurate so you can start to do
Under Pressure that's why it's important
that you don't skip steps and you do
simple exercises like this so you have
that feel of the Top Spin mastered over
time and that's going to allow you to
swing with more confidence so we'll be
back tomorrow with just one amazing
exercise for our day three topspin
challenge make sure you tune
in
now
