Transcripts
let's just start with how crazy this
past year has been tell me within a
couple of words how you would describe
it i would say that it was
hell hectic because a lot of people
didn't really know what was going on
it was a roller coaster ride it was kind
of nerve-wracking and crazy
you're stuck at home behind a computer
screen people are dying
and you don't know what else to do does
anybody show hands feel like
in the past year you've basically been
asked to grow up a lot faster than
you should normally we were expected
to have our grades high we were expected
to be
okay but behind the scenes a lot of us
are enduring our own issues
and to expect so much from us it's very
overwhelming
and that kind of affects all of our
mental health especially minds
so it caused stress and i couldn't
really sleep that much i was sleeping
like
at 3am 4am and then i have to wake up
like 7am 8am
get ready for school before the pandemic
like my grades were always high
i was always active my sleep schedule
flipped
because before i would wake up with like
six o'clock seven o'clock yep
anybody else have a sleep schedule flip
yeah yeah yeah
you all did yeah my gpa dropped i had to
start looking at other colleges which
did not help my confidence at all you
came here to the states yeah and then
the pandemic hits
yeah i just went to my middle school for
one week then
we were caring change i wasn't
comfortable speaking english and on top
of that
i have never met my teachers so it was
really tough for me to manage my classes
but also get used to the new environment
you don't realize how stressful it is
because as teens they think that
everything is going to be all right
you're young you'll handle it you're
strong i keep pretending like
student like kids don't have any type of
problems oh you're kids you're gonna
grow up that is just a little problem
now you're gonna grow over it
but they tend to ignore what's really
happening on the inside do you guys talk
about mental health with your friends
ability you ever have a conversation
like this or is it too heavy
it's just a subject that we never bring
up but in like school it's something
that we're learning about
it it comes up when there's like
something like a
tragedy that's happening my friends like
like we don't really touch on that
subject a lot
because like it gets kind of awkward to
talk about them
because you don't want to be seen
vulnerable or weak right that's what
we're trying to change that's called a
stigma we're trying to change the stigma
on the way that people talk about mental
health so that you feel comfortable
not pushing it down when you're feeling
sad or depressed or anxious
do you recognize it did you know what it
was at the time
i didn't really know at first until like
i started separating myself basically i
would say from the world and i started
like
getting away like not really talking to
people as much as i usually
would and that's when i knew like
something was wrong i didn't go outside
for like almost three months
i just stayed home did nothing rather
than study study study i was too focused
on my grades
that i forgot what i liked you lost
yourself
yep i didn't know how to define myself i
mean i got severely depressed um i would
start laughing at my mom which i knew
was wrong but like
at times i just stayed in my house in my
dark room just laying there on a bed
doing nothing sometimes i would play
music sometimes
nothing helped right not even sleeping
let me just go around the room when
you're stressed out
what's your greatest stress reliever i
kind of meditate
um take mindful breathing sometimes when
i'm having some sort of like
emotions or when i'm like stressed out i
do just stop for a moment and then just
pick up my pencil
and start drawing when i sketch it's
like you could visualize your emotion
i do that like when i feel something
hard and i don't know how i'm feeling
i'll just start sketching and kind of
see the emotion on the paper
yeah oh wow what advice do you have for
other teenagers
who are watching us all have this
conversation but who haven't talked to
anybody yet
i think the first step is to first
acknowledge the problem
to notice that there is a problem and
don't downgrade it
and the second step is to find your
circle know who will help you
know who will not to be honest be
yourself
if you're feeling like you want to
just sit down and cry it's better to cry
your heart out
at that moment instead of holding back
tears
can't we all just agree that for those
of us that have a story to tell
a mental health journey and here we are
on the other side of it society may look
at us as being weak
but aren't we really the strongest ones
100 look at what we can do you agree
with that
