Transcripts
oh Jesus Christ we've gone too far turn
back parkour robots they're here should
we be terrified probably if you've been
on the internet for the last few weeks
you've probably seen a video titled
Atlas Partners in
parkour it's created by the very
well-known Boston Dynamics and in the
video we would see two robots
maneuvering their way through a parkour
obstacle course the whole world was
completely amazed and terrified so in
today's video we're going to go through
how the hell this all
[Music]
happened so Boston Dynamics the people
that made this robot is a company from
wolam in Massachusetts in the
USA the company was actually founded in
1992 making it 29 years old and
originally they just started out as like
a 3D software developer they originally
created this animation software for the
Naval Air Warfare center training
systems division or the N aw ctsd which
really isn't any easier to say but
anyway they created this software called
di guy which apart from looking like
this old game called America's Army that
I used to play on an overheating family
computer at like 10 frames per second
despite that it was actually used to
make military training videos but
eventually the founder of Boston
Dynamics Mark started to wonder
how is he ever going to bring about the
eventual robot takeover with some crappy
3D software and then that was when he
had an idea before we continue with the
video I want to give a massive shout out
to today's sponsor V Ramen V Ramen is a
super nutritious Ultra delicious ramen
noodle pack these babies contain up to
25% of your daily values of your
vitamins and your minerals on top of
that this pack in particular has 29 G of
complete protein to me V Ramen is like
the solution when you've got no time to
cook and you don't want to just have
some junk food you want to eat something
healthy these babies are there for you
you literally just Chuck it in a pan
with hot water and 3 minutes later you
have a really delicious and healthy meal
oh and on top of that every time you use
the code it directly supports me and the
channel I get a little Kickback you get
a really healthy meal everyone wins so
be sure to go pick up some Vite Ramen
and use the code Jimmy the giant 10 to
get 10% off anyway back to the video
throughout the '90s Boston Dynamics
would take a Fascination in robotics and
they would start to create robots that
had a focus on movement a way of
navigating around difficult terrains
that required the robot to have a level
of intelligence a few demonic looking
robots later everything would
change in 2005 Boston Dynamics would
release big dog This creepy looking
would be seen break dancing jumping in a
puddle of Mud like a real dog taking a
relaxing stroll on a beach and being
kicked about
which to the person who did that I I
have to ask what were you thinking did
you never watch x MAA anyway from my
understanding this was a major step
forward for the world of Robotics big
dog was designed specifically to have
legs to allow it to overcome terrains
that Wheels wouldn't work in the
original purpose for Big Dog was for it
to be some kind of pack mule you know to
be used by soldiers who might put their
equipment on it but it was eventually
scrapped by DARPA because he was a noisy
bastard
[Music]
and then came
cheetah oh good God imagine that thing
just sprinting at you this boy as as the
name suggests was a nippy little fell in
2012 there was a video released of
cheetah doing you know his daily
exercise on the treadmill and clocking
in an insane 28.3
mph I really love the the title for this
video it says cheetah robot runs 28.3
mph a bit faster than you say Bol yeah
put him on the treadmill okay sir
oh look at that blood it that's quick
this is great
sir Co I'm exhausted just watching that
how fast was he uh we got 28.3 mph sir
28.3 that's brilliant how much fast is
that than humans well sir uh bolt runs
at 27 M hour so was so it's 1 M hour
quicker is that it but what's really
interesting about cheetah isn't just how
fast it was going his ability to jump
over an
obstacle cheetah could literally
identify an obstacle whilst it was
sprinting jump and then land and carry
on
running in the description of the video
they write in a leap for robotic
development I see what you did there the
MIT researchers who built a robotic
cheater have now trained it to see and
jump over hurdles as it runs making this
the first four-legged robot to run and
jump over OB stles
autonomously now this was like a big
moment in the trajectory of Boston
Dynamics being interested in parkour you
see designing a robot that can read its
surroundings calculate distances make
jumps and do things like that that's
Quite a feat in robotics this video
demonstrated that cheetah could react to
its surroundings as the obstacle was
just placed by a human randomly this
meant that cheetah had to spot the
obstacle time went to jump and then land
and continue running like nothing
happened which is exactly the same as
How Free Runners do parkour you'll go
outside you'll spot a jump and then you
have to work out how much power how much
speed and how to absorb the landing
you're doing a ton of calculations in
your head to pull off a successful jump
cheetah was replicating this and doing
it in a split second just like a human
after this they made little dog who was
more focused on climbing and like weird
terrain but then everything would change
October 30th 2011 we would see a robot
walking upright like a
human and that robot was called Petman
it's not a great name but still this was
a pivotal moment for Boston Dynamics as
they had moved into bipedal humanlike
robots they even dressed him up in like
overalls and a gas
mask and they had him walking like he
was going to a dance floor to challenge
someone to a dance battle hello my name
is Petman I'm a sexy naughty disco
[Music]
bot but all of this would look like a
joke in February 2016 with the release
of
Atlas Boston Dynamics released a video
to their YouTube titled Atlas the Next
Generation showing a new new humanoid
robot in the video the robot is shown
performing a number of tasks that would
be very difficult or impossible for the
previous generations of humanoid robots
Atlas is the robot that we see today but
in this video we see Atlas just walking
around in different terrains showcasing
its ability to recover from falling over
and the ability to walk really closely
and very awkwardly next to someone sort
of unsure if they should hold hands or
not Atlas was an intelligent robot made
to fulfill tasks recover from mistakes
and be bullied by the cool
kids but the thing is atlas was still
moving like a muggle there wasn't any
parkour yet just picking up boxes and
getting whacked with
sticks that was until the 11th of
October 2018 with the release of the
video Parkour Atlas now every freerunner
has their embarrassing first ever
parkour video and for Atlas this was his
jumping over logs running upstairs all
that was missing was like liquid drummer
[Music]
base Jokes Aside this video was
obviously incredible showing a robot
able to move quickly and not lose
momentum and shortly after we' see
another video called more parkour
[Music]
Atlas which I'm going to be honest here
is more of a gymnastics video but
whatever it was still insane seeing him
do handstands rolly poliy it was was
incredible and then we would see Atlas
enter its tricking phase with the video
what's new
[Music]
Atlas showcasing that Atlas was really
an all-rounded athlete after this we
wouldn't see much more of atlas's
Parkour career however we would see a
little foray into the World of
[Music]
Dance Imagine imagine that's your job
these lot are just around for a
living oh hi honey how was work it was
all right we were just teaching a robot
how to do the twist oh that's nice honey
this video as funny and terrifying as it
was was showcasing the ability of Boston
Dynamics range of
robots for these robots to be a to dance
they needed to be incredibly dextrous so
this was pretty amazing to
watch all of this leads us up to the
other week August 17th 2021 with the
release of Atlas Partners in
parkour after 3 years since starting
parkour this this was his big
showreel there's a part of me that
wishes they edited this like an old
school parkour
video it's so
sick then the
plos
oh could have worked on the landing it's
fine the vault it looks so fake the
vault looks weird but it's yeah I guess
it's
not hope it's not and
then the little Flex at the end I'm not
going to lie to be honest I wouldn't be
able to do the back flip back flip at
the end so already Atlas is better than
me this video is fully mad it's not just
the fact that they're doing parkour but
it's like the speed of it and the
momentum it doesn't stop it doesn't feel
staggered it's just continuous on the
Boston Dynamics YouTube they actually
put out an explainer of the whole Atlas
project and I find it really interesting
as to why they're doing this like why
they're making a parkour robot and they
say it's because parkour provides them
an opportunity to make a highspeed
decision-making robot that's athletic
and can move well and what's even more
interesting is the fact that Atlas has
to learn parkour it doesn't just do this
all right away it has to learn which is
no different to human freerunners why is
that a sentence Atlas is literally in
training learning moves trial and error
taking dirty Bales to the face picking
itself up and carrying Atlas even gets
injured just like humans our technicians
debug and repair a variety of issues
that can range from broken mechanical
parts to hydraulic leakages to
electrical failures all this is pretty
crazy but you might be wondering like
what's the point of all this I'm fairly
sure Atlas isn't trying to become a pro
freerunner and win Red Bull art motion
we see very recently Boston Dynamics was
purchased by Hyundai for 1.1 billion
doar and they just recently started
selling one of their robots called spot
which goes for like7
$4,500 like its name suggests it's used
for spotting and like surveying areas
spot is being used in hospitals it was
sent to go into this like unreachable
place in Chernobyl and they have another
robot called stretch that gets used in
like Warehouse picking and packing but
as for Atlas he's currently out of work
living with his parents and doing
parkour all day which sort of sounds
like most Free Runners I'm just joking
Atlas is like a research tool so right
now Atlas isn't being used and sold
commercially but rather they are
developing technology that will be and I
can imagine between now and when the
robots turn on us we'll see things like
Atlas being used in rescue situations it
might be used to save people from
disasters like a big fire that humans
can't go into or like radiation issues
things like that things where humans
can't go and they'll no doubt automate
work that humans can't or just don't
want to do and of course continue to
post their training Clips to YouTube I
just want to end this video by saying if
if you are a robot and you're watching
this I fully Embrace and accept our
robot overlords unlike this guy
please don't kill me anyway I hope you
enjoyed that video be sure to leave a
