Trish is originally from Durban, South Africa but now lives in the UK.
Younger generation needs to be more confident and break out of anxiety and stereotype constraints.
Older generation sees the younger one as constrained by racial, religious, and cultural stereotypes.
Young people should lead the way to make the world a better place.
Social media and the pandemic are contributing to the current generation's issues.
Polarization in the world is a major concern, with people being categorized as either/or.
Building relationships is key to overcoming polarization and finding humanity.
Trish's upbringing in South Africa under apartheid shaped her views on relationships and humanity.
The concept of 'ubuntu', a Zulu term, emphasizes finding humanity in relationships with others.
Nelson Mandela also talked about ubuntu, the idea of interconnected humanity.
Instead of being separate, people should come together as one, regardless of race or background.
There is a problem with young black men in London carrying weapons and gang warfare.
Mental Health Services are struggling to engage with at-risk youth meaningfully.
Engagement needs to happen on the streets, not just in offices or schools, to develop real relationships.
Developing relationships can give young people the freedom to express themselves and discuss their environment.
The interviewee thanks Trish for sharing her insights and experiences.
Transcripts
all righty I'm here with I'm Trish Trish
where you from Trish I'm originally from
Durban and South Africa but I'm now live
here in the UK okay sick so what's one
thing Our Generation could approve on I
think that your generation have got to
be more confident and because your
generation I think is constrained by
anxiety constrained by racial
stereotypes religious stereotypes
cultural stereotypes I think you have to
break out of those boxes and your
generation has to lead the way in terms
of making this world a better place for
all of us oh my god wow what what do you
think our generation so messed up
compared to the previous generations so
I think I think part of it is the uh is
social media okay okay I think part of
it is things like the co pandemic Etc
but for me it's about the polarization
that's happening in the world you're
either good or bad you're either black
or white you're either Muslim or
Christian and so what you have to do I
think the reason that you have to change
that is it's relationships that's that
is the key point so I was brought up in
South Africa under the apartes era we
didn't have relationships with people of
other color but it was only when we we
came out of that that we started to
learn about each other and it's only in
the relationship that we have that we
found our Humanity so that's what you
have to do and there's a really cool
concept called ubu it's a Zulu concept
and it's exactly that it's what n
Mandela talked about is we find our
Humanity in the relationships we have
with people oh my
God so basically you're saying instead
of being all separate boxers come
together as one doesn't matter who's
white who's black who's who's Asian
Indian who cares scratch all that come
together and be great so at the moment
we've got a real problem I I work in
Mental Health Services with children and
young people I know that young black men
in London are carrying machetes I know
that okay and there's gang Warfare and
they've been forced to do stuff that
aren now what we need to do is we need
to get to the level of those young black
guys and start engaging with them in a
meaningful way not in an office not in
the schools but actually on the streets
we need to start getting to know them
develop those relationships so they then
have the freedom and they're able to
start please and they're able doesn't
matter they're able to then talk about
the risks and about what's happening in
their environment thank bro thank you so
much thank you so much for your
information oh
