📝 Embracing Fears Through TAG Technique

The speaker introduces a technique called TAG, which stands for Truth, Acceptance, and Go. It's a method to confront and work with deep-seated fears, particularly those related to creative pursuits like acting. The speaker shares a personal story about avoiding contact with his agent due to fear, illustrating how unrecognized fears can paralyze action. The TAG technique is presented as a tool to safely confront these fears and integrate them into one's creative process, ultimately enhancing audition techniques.

05:01

🔍 Unveiling Old Beliefs with TAG

This paragraph delves deeper into the TAG technique, emphasizing writing as a means to uncover unconscious fears and limiting beliefs. The speaker suggests that by identifying a specific fear and exploring its root causes through continuous writing, individuals can reach a core belief that is often false but deeply ingrained. The process involves writing down fears and their consequences until an irrational belief is revealed, which is a crucial step in addressing and overcoming these internal barriers.

10:03

🚫 Challenging and Replacing Old Beliefs

The speaker discusses the importance of challenging and replacing old, limiting beliefs with new, empowering truths. After identifying a false belief, one should create a new belief that is positive and empowering, even if the old belief still holds emotional weight. This process involves acknowledging the old belief, feeling the associated emotions, and then consciously choosing to act in alignment with the new, empowering truth, which can lead to a more fulfilling and less fear-driven life.

15:04

💡 The Power of Acceptance and New Truths

In this paragraph, the speaker stresses the significance of acceptance in personal growth. play00:11

and so I'm gonna go over with you guys

play00:13

now this little written technique that I

play00:16

call tag it's just a fun acronym to

play00:21

remember what it is

play00:22

it stands for truth acceptance go tag

play00:26

it's a fun way to remember it and it's a

play00:28

great way to think of it it's like you

play00:29

want to play tag with your fears tag

play00:32

fear you're it I'm gonna play this

play00:34

creative game with my worst fears the

play00:37

fears that are blocking me because it's

play00:39

safe to play with them it's safe to look

play00:41

your deepest fears

play00:43

these old belief fears straight in the

play00:46

eye it's safe it's scary as but

play00:49

it's safe to work with them because

play00:51

they're not what they appeared to be and

play00:53

if we don't creatively work with them

play00:56

we'll never get a shot at creatively

play00:58

working on the actual audition what I'm

play01:01

going to talk to you guys about here

play01:03

first is how do you creatively work with

play01:06

that obsessional fear and make that a

play01:09

creative project and arts so that then

play01:12

you can get to the art of the audition

play01:14

or actually a better way to put it I

play01:16

think is to have this acceptance and

play01:18

owning your own old beliefs as part of

play01:22

your audition technique itself that's

play01:24

what I would encourage you so this

play01:26

example I often give when I talk and I

play01:28

won't go to this hole I'm gonna shorten

play01:30

it for our purposes here but a true

play01:33

story that when I was in New York in the

play01:35

in the mid-90s as a young actor I had a

play01:38

good agent that were getting me good

play01:39

auditions big auditions and one point my

play01:42

agent gave me a voice mail message and

play01:47

the message was Greg were out of

play01:48

headshots we need you to drop off new

play01:51

headshots they didn't want new pictures

play01:54

they just wanted new copies of my

play01:55

headshot and this was back in the day

play01:57

where if you didn't if your agent didn't

play01:59

have actual tangible headshots

play02:01

there was no audition happening this is

play02:03

hard for many of you to envision but

play02:04

there was no email

play02:05

there was bike messengers been peddling

play02:08

all over town giving agents packages of

play02:10

headshots so anyway when I got this

play02:12

voice mail message I knew there was no

play02:14

shot at me getting an audition again

play02:16

until my agent until I left my agent

play02:19

these headshots

play02:19

and I knew all I had to do was drop them

play02:22

off just go to

play02:24

get copies of them drop them off didn't

play02:26

even have to talk to my agent this is a

play02:29

true story I did not make copies of the

play02:31

headshots or call my agent back or go to

play02:35

the office or do anything for over a

play02:39

year this is a true frickin story but I

play02:44

thought about it every day now if we

play02:48

were to go back in time and encounter

play02:49

this young Greg a couple months let's

play02:53

say or even a couple weeks after not

play02:56

doing this after getting the voicemail

play02:58

message and just like doing nothing and

play03:00

we were to say to him like hey man why

play03:02

are you terrified to contact your agent

play03:04

the young Greg would probably say what's

play03:08

weird meeting my future self and some

play03:09

other people but besides that you're

play03:11

wrong I'm not terrified of talking to my

play03:13

agent it's just been a weird two months

play03:15

you know I had the thing with the girl

play03:16

and that was weird and then suddenly it

play03:17

had been a month that I'm like oh man

play03:19

I'm the guy who hasn't called his agent

play03:20

back that's weird to be that guy but I'm

play03:22

about to do it a Tuesday I'm about to do

play03:24

it I'm gonna call my agent and square

play03:26

this up right because that's what we

play03:28

tell ourselves now on Tuesday I'm gonna

play03:30

do the self table audition on Tuesday

play03:32

I'm gonna hunker down on Tuesday she's

play03:34

not right now well retrospect is a funny

play03:37

thing because I know that young Greg was

play03:40

paralyzed with crippling fear but he

play03:43

didn't know it or only knew it in

play03:45

moments and I'll never forget one day I

play03:48

finally called him back a year later and

play03:50

I was changed smoking Marlboro Lights

play03:53

this is a pay phone these be pay phones

play03:55

back then I was chained smoking Marlboro

play03:57

Lights as I was want to do and I called

play04:00

that agency back and of course it was a

play04:02

totally new receptionist to answer the

play04:03

phone because it's been over a year and

play04:05

I'm like this is Greg Sam is calling for

play04:06

whatever my agents name was and he's

play04:07

like Greg who and I go and I

play04:10

slammed the phone down and my hand was

play04:12

shaking as I lit another cigarette and I

play04:15

had this doorway of clarity that opened

play04:17

up and I think of these moments in life

play04:20

especially in regards to to seeing our

play04:23

old beliefs for what they are they're

play04:26

like these doorways of clarity that open

play04:27

up if you've ever seen Raiders of the

play04:29

Lost Ark which I will reference again

play04:31

later for another reason but if you've

play04:32

ever seen Raiders the Lost Ark there's

play04:34

that classic scene where Harrison Ford

play04:35

rolls under the door

play04:37

is the doors closing and then he like

play04:38

jauntily grabs his hat but he's got you

play04:41

know it's closing he's got to get

play04:43

through it I think we can have these

play04:45

moments of awakening in our life where

play04:48

we suddenly realize a great and profound

play04:51

truth about ourselves but we have about

play04:53

two minutes to physically act to do

play04:57

something that is in our power and if we

play05:01

don't the awakening gets submerged again

play05:05

it goes back into the unconscious so for

play05:08

about two minutes i sat there smoking

play05:10

thinking i'm eft i am supposedly

play05:14

fulfilling my lifelong childhood dream

play05:16

of being a professional actor and I'm

play05:19

too terrified to call my agent back to

play05:22

work on an audition I'm too terrified to

play05:25

get outside of my comfort zone in any

play05:27

real way and it suddenly became clear to

play05:29

me that all the work I was doing in

play05:32

regard to auditioning in my acting

play05:34

career was fantasy work I was playing at

play05:38

it

play05:38

it's as if my office this office here

play05:40

were a total filthy mess and I came to

play05:43

work every day to clean it but I just

play05:44

lifted up my couch up and down for three

play05:47

hours and then left and said it's a hard

play05:51

day at work I'm exhausted but I wasn't

play05:55

addressing the mess and I wasn't doing

play05:57

anything real that's what my life was as

play06:00

a young actor now what that young Gregg

play06:04

didn't realize that the old Greg knows

play06:06

older old her Craig knows is that there

play06:10

were old beliefs at play that we're

play06:13

blocking me so this little written

play06:15

technique that I'm going to go through

play06:16

here in a compact way you can ask me

play06:18

more questions about it later but it's a

play06:20

it's a simple way to trick the

play06:22

unconscious mind into spilling the beans

play06:25

on what's really blocking us and as soon

play06:28

as you do this and you can do it on a

play06:30

notebook on a napkin on a sheet of paper

play06:32

you can do it on your notes well you

play06:34

know whatever app on the phone it's

play06:37

better to do it by hand if at all

play06:39

possible because there's something about

play06:41

using a pen or a pencil and actually

play06:44

writing that seems to get to the truth

play06:46

in a different way plus if you're using

play06:48

the phone you're probably not going to

play06:51

fit

play06:51

the exercise because you're gonna check

play06:52

insta or the New York Times or just

play06:55

distract yourself because what I'm

play06:58

talking about here a large part of you

play07:00

doesn't want to own your obsessional

play07:02

fears a large part of you wants to stay

play07:05

in the comfort zone wants to die in the

play07:07

comfort zone that's just human nature I

play07:09

don't fully understand it of course at

play07:11

all I don't fully understand anything

play07:14

like Indiana Jones I'm making it up as I

play07:17

go along like we all are whether we

play07:19

pretend to or not right but I do know

play07:24

from my own experience and witnessing it

play07:27

and others that part of us wants to stay

play07:29

part of us doesn't want to grow part of

play07:31

us doesn't want to enter the

play07:33

vulnerability of real creativity of

play07:36

really being in what we actually have

play07:38

power over so what you can do is when

play07:41

you notice you're an obsessive fear

play07:43

meaning you're about to start work on

play07:45

yourself tape audition are you about to

play07:47

call the agent or you're about to do

play07:48

whatever it is but if we're setting self

play07:50

tape right like you're about to start

play07:52

working and suddenly you are an

play07:53

obsessional fear your mind is going like

play07:55

well wait am i doing the right scene am

play07:57

I not doing the right scene is anyone

play07:58

really gonna watch this what's the point

play08:00

of doing this and it's gonna be good I

play08:01

don't think I'm gonna be any good what

play08:02

if it's not good if any kind of

play08:03

obsessional fear hits what you want to

play08:06

do on the paper is start by writing what

play08:08

the trigger seems to be what is the

play08:11

thing you're obsessing about right now

play08:12

so let's use myself as an example that

play08:15

young Greg if he knew this this tag

play08:18

technique let's say he got that

play08:20

voicemail message and his agent said

play08:22

drop off new headshots and he could

play08:25

acknowledge oh my god I'm obsessing

play08:27

about calling my agent back I'm an

play08:29

obsessive fear I am scared to call my

play08:31

agent back what he would write at the

play08:33

top of the page is I have fear about

play08:35

calling my agent back or I'm obsessing

play08:38

about calling my agent back and if

play08:40

you're about to work on your self tape

play08:41

audition and you're like why am I not

play08:43

working on it because I'm obsessing

play08:44

about the audition I'm obsessing that

play08:46

it's not going to be any good you would

play08:48

just write I have fear that this

play08:50

audition won't be any good or I have

play08:51

fear about working on the self table

play08:53

audition and then what you want to do is

play08:56

write without thinking let it vomit on

play09:00

the page and the linking phrase that

play09:03

works for like

play09:04

95% of the people that I work with and

play09:06

if it's not we you know we can tweak it

play09:08

but this almost always works is some

play09:10

version of and because of that I have

play09:12

fear and because of that I have fear

play09:15

meaning you just keep answering that

play09:18

question without thinking and write what

play09:21

comes out and you don't stop until you

play09:25

see in black and white on the page

play09:27

something that is a hundred percent

play09:30

false not only for you but for any human

play09:36

being because if we go deep enough we

play09:39

see this as I said earlier the old

play09:41

beliefs that are blocking us are a

play09:44

hundred percent of the time not true but

play09:48

we believe them they are

play09:50

misapprehensions

play09:51

not only about ourselves but about the

play09:54

human condition and as we'll see here in

play09:57

a moment or we'll talk about we can't

play09:59

unbeliev them and when we try to we get

play10:02

all gummed up because we're attempting

play10:04

to do something we don't have power over

play10:06

but we can accept that we have a

play10:09

delusion and we can practice acting

play10:13

contrary to the delusion we can practice

play10:17

acting on what's true even though

play10:19

emotionally psychologically we're still

play10:22

tied to the old belief so I'll give the

play10:24

example right so again if the young

play10:26

Gregg were to start with what that

play10:29

surface fear is and he wants to keep

play10:31

going until he gets to something that is

play10:33

clearly untrue so the young Gregg my go

play10:36

I have fear about calling my agent back

play10:39

because I have fear that it will lead to

play10:42

an awkward conversation and because of

play10:44

that I have fear they'll drop me as a

play10:46

client and if they drop me as a client I

play10:48

have fear I'll never get great audition

play10:50

opportunities and if I get if I don't

play10:53

get great audition opportunities I have

play10:55

fear I'll never be truly successful as

play10:57

an actor okay and a lot of the tags you

play11:02

take around self tape will probably get

play11:04

to something close to what I just said I

play11:06

have fear I'll never be truly great as

play11:08

an actor that's what came up for me and

play11:11

this is where the mind part of the mind

play11:15

wants you to stop

play11:16

when you get right right on top of the

play11:19

real old belief because I look at these

play11:22

old beliefs as one way to look at them

play11:24

as they're invading organisms they're

play11:26

fighting for survival they're not real

play11:28

but they don't want you to get there

play11:30

this is why all these images from

play11:32

fairytales and beautiful stories the

play11:34

wizard in The Wizard of Oz don't look at

play11:36

the mountain behind the curtain thunder

play11:37

lightning don't look hey it's just me

play11:39

I'm not a wizard

play11:41

Rumpelstiltskin the boogeyman and so

play11:43

many you know stories when you know the

play11:45

boogey man's name when you look him in

play11:47

the eye

play11:48

he shrivels up and goes because he ain't

play11:50

really real but the closer you get to

play11:52

that truth oh my god you will try to

play11:55

convince yourself don't dare look don't

play11:58

dare look so part of me wants that to be

play12:01

my old belief though I wanted to be the

play12:03

old belief that know my old belief is

play12:05

that I will never be truly successful as

play12:07

an actor but I just need to tell myself

play12:08

I will be or we may think like I think I

play12:11

won't do good at this audition but I

play12:13

just need to to tell myself I will do go

play12:15

to this audition but that's not in our

play12:18

power I can't control result and it's

play12:23

subjective as an mf'er

play12:26

it's like what does that even mean good

play12:28

it's changing in my mind all the time

play12:30

but the idea of like I can self well

play12:34

myself into being a successful actor

play12:36

again what's happening in the world

play12:38

right now shows us that ain't true or

play12:41

people have known this in different

play12:43

parts of the world for a long time

play12:45

people that live in a ravaged war-torn

play12:47

country they can't will themselves into

play12:51

material success tell the person whose

play12:55

spouse just got killed by a drunk driver

play12:57

gosh if you guys would have believed

play12:59

better you could have created a new

play13:01

reality no hell no the rain falls on the

play13:06

just and the unjust I may never be a

play13:09

successful actor because I may get hit

play13:11

by a bus in five minutes I may not get

play13:13

the part because it went to the the

play13:15

guy's cousin it is not in my power to be

play13:19

a successful actor so we haven't gotten

play13:23

to the old belief until we get to

play13:24

something that's not true but you know

play13:26

you're close to it when you want to stop

play13:29

when

play13:30

I just like don't go any further please

play13:31

please please but if that young Gregg

play13:33

went further it might look like this if

play13:35

you took it all the way down I have fear

play13:37

about calling my agent back because I

play13:38

fear it will be a upward conversation

play13:42

because that I feel that dropped me as a

play13:43

client if they drop me as a client I

play13:44

hope there'll never be a great audition

play13:45

opportunities and if I never get great

play13:47

audition opportunities I have fear I'll

play13:49

never be truly successful as an actor

play13:50

and if I'm not truly successful as an

play13:52

actor my life will have no value or

play13:54

meaning I'll be crushed by regret and

play13:56

I'll be annihilated

play14:00

it's not true if I'm not a success as an

play14:04

actor my life will have no value or

play14:07

meaning I will be crushed by regret and

play14:10

I'll be annihilated that is actually was

play14:14

one of my core beliefs and still is

play14:18

today it changes around a little bit but

play14:23

the most important thing is I have a

play14:24

whole different relationship with it

play14:26

than I ever thought possible but I think

play14:29

many of you if you try this exercise

play14:31

you'll find similar old beliefs around

play14:34

auditioning that at the bottom is often

play14:37

something like if I'm not as success my

play14:40

life will have no value remaining I'll

play14:42

be crushed by regret now be annihilated

play14:44

I will never experience real love I'll

play14:47

live and regret for the rest of my life

play14:49

I'll have an unhappy life I'll be

play14:51

miserable none of this is true right and

play14:58

what I ask you to do is part of this tag

play15:00

process is once you get to that old

play15:02

belief the next step is to write out

play15:04

another little fun acronym net the net

play15:07

the net is the thing that catches us the

play15:10

net is the new empowering truth the new

play15:13

empowering truth because if we're saying

play15:15

the old belief is not true then what is

play15:18

true what's something that we can

play15:21

articulate that we don't believe about

play15:24

ourselves but deep down we know to be

play15:27

true and it's phrased in such a way that

play15:31

empowers us personally and it's not

play15:33

Pollyanna new-age thinking it's like

play15:36

based on our assessment of reality we

play15:38

can say no I believe that to be true but

play15:41

you don't believe it for yourself

play15:43

because the old belief is still probably

play15:45

really with you and maybe for the rest

play15:48

of your life and that's actually okay so

play15:51

it's a fun game have fun it's a game we

play15:54

can play

play15:54

ultimately it is and can be but imagine

play15:57

a loved one set that old belief to you

play16:00

how do we come up with a new empowering

play16:02

truth because a lot of time when I work

play16:03

with people they're like okay you're

play16:05

right I believe that I believe if I'm

play16:06

not a reoccurring guest star on

play16:07

Westworld my life is gonna have no

play16:09

meaning or I'll be miserable I'll be

play16:10

crushed by regret or whatever but yeah I

play16:12

believe it so I can

play16:14

tell myself that no it doesn't matter

play16:15

well imagine a loved one said that to

play16:17

you what would you say to the loved one

play16:21

because deep down we know what's true

play16:23

and when I imagine my beautiful

play16:25

five-year-old daughter grown to be a

play16:27

twenty-one year old woman and if I

play16:29

imagine her saying to me daddy I just

play16:31

have fear that if I'm not a successful

play16:33

ballerina my life will have no value or

play16:36

meaning I'll be crushed by regret and be

play16:37

annihilated if she were to say that to

play16:39

me I wouldn't go maybe yeah you better

play16:44

get you a better teacher because that

play16:46

could be we don't want that to happen

play16:47

let's work harder come on do better yeah

play16:49

I don't do that right immediately when

play16:52

we think about a loved one saying that

play16:54

to us something true and loving begins

play16:59

to happen and we connect with the truth

play17:01

right away I would comfort my daughter

play17:04

and speak of the truth and this can take

play17:06

practice sometimes to really begin to to

play17:10

articulate and the great thing is your

play17:11

old beliefs will come up a lot

play17:13

especially once you start sniffing them

play17:15

out so you can take this tag a lot and

play17:17

the same ones will come up and you can

play17:19

just keep embracing them and working

play17:21

with them so for time over me the new

play17:24

empowering truth that answered my old

play17:26

belief which again was if I'm not a

play17:28

success as an actor my life will have no

play17:30

value or meaning I'll be crushed by

play17:32

regret now be annihilated the new

play17:34

empowering truth became whether or not

play17:37

I'm ever a success as an actor has no

play17:41

bearing at all on anything that has a

play17:43

real and lasting value in my life as

play17:47

long as I am perfectly practice my

play17:51

ever-expanding principles my life is

play17:55

guaranteed to have value and meaning

play17:57

beyond measure

play18:00

I will never be crushed by regret

play18:03

and what's most real about me can never

play18:06

be annihilated

play18:09

now that resonates really true with me

play18:12

it doesn't always move me so much as it

play18:14

just did but it always resonates is true

play18:17

and if you say something like that to

play18:21

the mind the mind goes

play18:24

okay then technically that is that is

play18:27

technically true what you just said

play18:28

whereas if you say the mind we're going

play18:31

to book this job the mind goes how you

play18:32

know you look the last one the last five

play18:33

the guy in the waiting room looks like

play18:35

you're better looking younger brother

play18:36

why isn't he gonna book a job huh how do

play18:38

you know how self-hatred spiral but when

play18:41

we speak the truth to ourselves part of

play18:44

us can't argue but the feelings around

play18:47

the old belief are still probably going

play18:49

to be really prevalent especially when

play18:52

you're first doing this so the next step

play18:54

I asked the individual to do is you've

play18:56

got the old belief you've got the new

play18:58

empowering truth then write down and own

play19:00

what you're feeling it can be helpful to

play19:02

write it down but most importantly feel

play19:05

it be honest with yourself I just wrote

play19:07

that old belief I just wrote the new

play19:09

empowering truth now what am I feeling

play19:11

right now sad a little faith a little

play19:16

positivity maybe from that you know new

play19:19

empowering truth but maybe it's fear

play19:21

self-hatred shame and to just sit with

play19:24

the feelings and own them and just be

play19:29

with your feelings for a couple minutes

play19:31

and then have this contemplative

play19:34

dialogue with yourself where in essence

play19:36

you say hey Greg if since early

play19:39

childhood you thought that if you

play19:41

weren't a success as an actor your your

play19:43

life would have no value or meaning

play19:44

you'd be crushed by regret and you'd be

play19:46

annihilated doesn't it make sense that

play19:48

you would be terrified right now to call

play19:50

your agent back or to work on this

play19:52

audition because it's not really about

play19:54

the audition it's about that deeper

play19:56

thing doesn't that logically make sense

play19:58

that you'd be feeling these intense

play19:59

feelings yeah actually that does make

play20:01

sense but Greg can you admit that you've

play20:04

had it ass-backwards your whole life the

play20:06

feelings aren't evidence that the old

play20:10

belief is true you just thought the old

play20:13

belief for so long that it's generated

play20:16

this emotional state so can you own the

play20:21

feelings not try to change them but

play20:24

practice acting as if the new empowering

play20:26

truth is true what we can do that

play20:31

so if the young Gregg were to do this

play20:33

exercise right when he got the message

play20:36

to call his agent back what might a next

play20:39

right action be and this is the final

play20:41

step of the tag process is after owning

play20:44

the old belief and owning the new

play20:45

empowering truth and feeling the

play20:47

feelings what might the version of you

play20:49

do not your actual version could you

play20:51

still believe the old belief but the

play20:53

version that really believed the new

play20:55

empowering truth what would they do

play20:57

and so that young Gregg might go well

play21:01

they would call their agent back or you

play21:03

might go well I would start working on

play21:05

this audition not because it's what's

play21:08

going to give me the meaning of my life

play21:10

and it's going to it's gonna save me

play21:13

from regret no because this is my job

play21:17

and this is the thing I'm choosing to

play21:18

work on or maybe we've suddenly inspired

play21:21

to call a friend back or to share what

play21:25

we just discovered with someone else

play21:26

which is a great thing to do to share

play21:27

all this with a trusted friend but maybe

play21:30

we're called to do something that really

play21:32

connects us with our principles in a

play21:35

real direct way before working on the

play21:37

audition so we can get more like kind of

play21:39

mainline attached to our principles or

play21:44

maybe we just work on the audition but

play21:47

we're working on it for the sake of

play21:49

working on it and even though

play21:50

emotionally psychologically that feeling

play21:53

is there and this is a great segue and

play21:55

now actually you know the working on

play21:57

these auditions but we come to see that

play22:01

whatever we're feeling is actually

play22:04

workable we can act through it we don't

play22:08

have to get rid of these feelings and we

play22:10

can't because they've been with us for a

play22:12

long time part of the reason that I

play22:16

worshipped my acting career for so long

play22:19

was because I had some abuse in

play22:23

childhood in an early age from not the

play22:26

family from outside the family but it

play22:30

led to very terrifying feelings and soon

play22:35

after this this event of abuse I got on

play22:40

stage for the first time and like at the

play22:41

age of six

play22:43

and it was this beautiful experience I

play22:46

remember it right and it it made me feel

play22:49

safe I definitely felt it was a

play22:51

spiritual calling to act and I wouldn't

play22:53

describe is at the time but but I felt

play22:56

safe and in the flow and connected and

play23:00

at peace and those things are all great

play23:03

but this young boy erroneously developed

play23:06

the old belief that if I wasn't involved

play23:08

with great acting and people didn't

play23:10

think I was great I would never be safe

play23:12

I could never have peace

play23:14

I could never experience tranquility and

play23:17

meaning it's not true but I developed

play23:21

that old belief and today as a man

play23:24

sometimes acting still does give me

play23:27

connectivity and deep meaning and

play23:28

tranquility and sometimes it doesn't but

play23:31

the most important thing is I don't

play23:33

worship it or if I catch myself

play23:36

worshipping the audition or worshipping

play23:38

my career I have tools to help me

play23:41

surrender and get back in touch with

play23:44

what's real and I have a way of living

play23:47

as a man where I'm engaged with some

play23:50

principles and actions in a real

play23:52

tangible literal way on a daily basis

play23:55

that assures me a modicum of meaning and

play23:57

flow and connectivity and tranquillity

play24:00

and peace so I'm not drawn to worship

play24:03

acting as much as I once was

play24:04

right so the feelings are workable okay

play24:10

the feelings are all workable and real

play24:14

quick another way to say it and then I'm

play24:15

gonna you know we're gonna really do

play24:18

some acting here I'm going to

play24:19

demonstrate some stuff I have some

play24:20

volunteers that I've randomly chosen

play24:22

semi-random hey before this that we're

play24:25

gonna we're going to play with some

play24:26

people here and talk about the the ways

play24:28

that I find it very helpful to approach

play24:31

the audition but everything I've been

play24:34

talking about is is so important from my

play24:36

point of view because if you're not

play24:38

beginning the audition process with an

play24:40

understanding of what I've been talking

play24:42

about the whole audition ends up being

play24:44

about trying to control result or

play24:46

feeling and the image I wanted to say to

play24:49

describe this relationship with old

play24:51

beliefs and really to describe the

play24:52

audition itself when I was like

play24:55

I'm a recovered drug addict and

play24:57

alcoholic I've been sober for many years

play24:59

now but I used to be way out of control

play25:01

and when I was like 22 or something I

play25:04

was at a party and I was on five hits of

play25:06

really really bad LSD and if you've ever

play25:10

been on really bad illusions it's not

play25:12

fun I was at this party and I felt like

play25:15

I was seeing my dead grandmother come

play25:16

out of the walls everybody's face was

play25:18

melting I was a really insecure um young

play25:21

man I felt more insecure than ever had

play25:22

in my life I felt like I was watching

play25:24

atoms of my body just drift away and go

play25:27

into space and I was about to turn to a

play25:30

friend and say take me to the hospital I

play25:32

cannot live the next seven hours like

play25:34

this when all of a sudden an another

play25:36

friend of mine sat on the couch opposite

play25:38

me and I don't know where these guys

play25:39

come from the guy that when you're in

play25:41

your early 20s there's someone who's

play25:42

like 21 and was a drug shaman like a 21

play25:44

like what is this guy been doing right

play25:46

but I had one of those friends and he

play25:48

set across for me because he could tell

play25:50

what I was going through and he looked

play25:52

me in the eye and he said hey Greg

play25:53

remember it's just the drugs

play25:59

and I thought oh wow it's just the drugs

play26:03

and I actually began to enjoy the party

play26:07

and enjoy being massively insecure

play26:12

because I was in touch with the truth

play26:15

that it was the drugs I didn't try to

play26:18

not feel the feelings and not see the

play26:21

hallucinations I accepted them and

play26:24

realized I could have a different

play26:26

opinion about them and act through them

play26:29

or along with them so this is what we're

play26:32

looking to do when the old beliefs get

play26:34

triggered and it's what we're looking to

play26:36

do with the audition in general okay so

play26:39

hopefully that makes sense and you can

play26:40

relate it to other stuff I'm going to

play26:42

talk about now but it's very important

play26:44

for my point of view which is why I

play26:45

spend so much time talking about it
