this book it's titled church

the missionary community now before we

even open the content

of this book i want to draw attention to

that title

because there's a number of things that

we should discuss about it

for example what do we mean by the word

church

when we hear the word church there's

probably a number of things

that come to mind for example

perhaps we think about an institution a

larger structure that gives us

principles beliefs

doctrines dogma a way to understand

this world and the world beyond

an institution our structure that gives

us morality

guiding principles of how to live our

life

in and go along this journey

an institution or a structure that

teaches

us how to pray shows us how to pray

and dictates how we should pray when we

come together

perhaps when we think about church we

think about hierarchy

particular individuals who we say are

leaders to us

going all the way up to pope francis who

is the head of the universal church

when we think about church perhaps we

think about

lay faithful we think about the

believers who come day in and day out to

receive holy quran participate in

sacraments

and to be the salt of the earth

now whether we think of church as an

institution

as hierarchy or as the assembly of

believers

the church is way way more

than all of that the church

is the body of christ and just as christ

incarnated himself two thousand years

ago by the power of the holy spirit into

the womb of the blessed virgin mary

so by baptism in the holy eucharist

there is an ongoing incarnation

that christ continues to exist

to live to move and to be in this world

through his body the church

along with the church something else

that we might want to consider is

what does it mean to be missionary

the word mission comes from the latin

word

which means to send and the

definition to send implies a

relationship because there's no way that

you can

send without having one something

to send and someone who

does the sending and we see

the most beautiful missionary

relationship

in the mission of jesus christ who was

sent

by his father into this world

and so we read in the gospel according

to saint john

that for god so loved the world that he

gave

his only son so that everyone who

believes in him

might not perish but might have eternal

life for god to not send his son

into the world to condemn the world but

that the world might be saved

through him just as the father

sent his son through the power of the

holy spirit

into this world jesus

lived out this mission so so so

perfectly

this mission of his father that he

became

that mission he becomes that mission

by the power of the holy spirit because

we hear in scripture of how

jesus is sent out into the desert by the

power of the spirit

or jesus speaks by the power of the

spirit

or that even at the crucifixion jesus

commends his spirit to the father his

whole life

is living in accord with this spirit

and living out this mission that is

given to him

by the father

but in a similar way

we have to look at the end of matthew's

gospel

because in the gospel according to saint

matthew

we hear go therefore

and make disciples of all nations

baptizing them

in the name of the father and of the son

and of the holy spirit

teaching them to observe all that i have

commanded you

and behold i am with you always until

the end

of the age

so just as the body of christ

was incarnated 2 000 years ago

and by baptism in the eucharist

this body of christ lives in the world

as the church we are all called

to live as christ who

being the mission living the mission of

the father so perfectly that he became

that mission we are called to be

like christ and be mission

living out the mission of christ in this

world

and we do this with the power of the

holy spirit because

the same holy spirit

that guided and formed directed

and empowered christ lives

within us we are all called to be

missionary and this doesn't mean that we

only preach the bible to foreign lands

like saint francis savior or that

we feed the poor and heal the sick

like saint mother teresa we do those

things

but we are also called to be

missionary in the ordinary aspects of

life

being missionary means being christ in

the world

and showing all people and all creation

that god loves you

and sometimes this means that we

show and tell this great

news this revelation to people who have

never heard it and this we can call

evangelization

but sometimes this also means that we

have to

remind or strengthen those who have

already heard

this good news and maybe forgot and this

is what we would call

re-evangelization what do we mean

by community from the very moment of our

conception

we are in relationship we were formed in

the relationship

of our parents and in the womb we are in

constant relationship with our mother

once we are born we are in relationship

with our

family a network of relationships

and as we grow older this family expands

extended family members brothers and

sisters

friends and from there even

we are brought into a worshiping

community

relationships a parish community

and these bonds of love help us to grow

they help us to grow as individuals

as persons to be authentically ourselves

but at the same time being authentic for

ourselves

helps the community to grow

to be more themselves

the community is not just something that

we

join or we use for our own purposes

the community is something very active

it's something that we are

part of it's something that we foster

the community would not be the same if

you're not there

the community needs you

so understanding that these three words

church mission community

very complex ideas not a very clear

definition

but something that we know we experience

and we're called to live let's think

about

what our church has told us in the

second vatican council

particularly that all

christians by the example of their lives

and the witness of the word wherever

they live

have an obligation to manifest the new

man

which they put on in baptism and to

reveal the power of the holy spirit

by whom they were strengthened at

confirmation

so that others seeing their good works

might glorify the father and more

perfectly perceive

the true meaning of human life and the

universal

solidarity of mankind

in order to bear witness to christ

fruitfully

they should establish relationships of

respect and love

with those men they should acknowledge

themselves as members of the group in

which they live

and through the various undertakings and

affairs of human life

they should share in their social and

cultural life

that is what we're called to do we are

called to be

christian we are called to live out

our christianity in this world and

remember

that pope benedict had told us that

being christian is not the result of an

ethical choice

or a lofty idea but the encounter

with an event a person which gives

life a new horizon and a decisive

direction so my dear sisters and

brothers

understand

who the church is how do we live

out the mission of christ in this

world and how do we make

ourselves an authentic

self-gift for the larger community

that is what we are going to be
