Hello, we are going to start the first group of this unit named
"Education in the digital society of the 21st century"
In order to do that, we are going to question ourselves and try
to answer, obviously, this question: What is the digital society?
It would be convenient to go, perhaps, 200 years backwards in order to understand this present
because there is a way of addressing it, which is to believe
that the time we have been living in during these last 200 years
is a time where technology has played a central key role
in relation to economic, social evolution and, logically cultural evolution, of at least our western societies.
For that, and it is already well known, we tend to say that the European, the American society...
the west in general, has made a journey in which
different Industrial Revolutions have taken place.
The first one, widely known,
occurs during the 18th century and a large portion of the 19th century, in relation to what was
known as the first Industrial Revolution where steam engines,
and the pioneering factories, played a very important role.
Towards the end of the 19th century and
mainly all along the 20th, it took place what is known as the second
Industrial Revolution, where electric energy and other petroleum-derived energetic forms
appeared and led us to enter that second industrial revolution
known as mass production etc.
Towards the end of the 20th century and the beginnings of the 21st, and it is where many authors say we are,
it is taking place what we know as the third Industrial Revolution
where digital technology plays the key role. It is about
computing, the aparition of computers, mobile phones and
the whole Internet and the automation that accompanies it.
However, this is what I am pointing out
on this first slide, there are already authors and even
experts who say we have entered, we are at the beginning of what it would be the
fourth Industrial Revolution; in fact, on the last Davos Conference, held
in Switzerland at the beginning of this year 2016, the focal point of that global meeting,
was precisely the fourth industrial revolution where autonomous machines,
those machines branded as inteligent, take the spotlight and they are the ones that,
in some way, are acting inteligently; and we enter what we
could describe as some sort of cybersociety. But...well, as educators I would
like you to think of another metaphor, a metaphor taken from
biology, where what has been, during these last decades, the configuration of
our culture, and mainly the printed and audiovisual culture that we
met during the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, of the past century
on that cultural ecosystem that we used to know, during these last years
it entered as an invasive species, so to speak, to put it metaforical,
these machines, ICTs, -Information and Communication Technology-
which at the beginning started little by little,
for some reason, have been colonizing the whole cultural ecosystem until having transformed it
into the situation we are now in, for this reason, we could say
that our sociocultural present, that this digital society, to put it into words,
would be that, a social, cultural ecosystem and, logically, also economical
colonized, invaded, expanded or where digital technologies are omnipresent
We will proceed analysing this in more detail, we are going to see
as educators, as culture workers;
we could metaphorically say that we are also on a transitional period,
where, more and more, let's say that digital cultural omnipresence, is steadily increasing
A transitional period since the time of the enlightened and modern culture
of the 19th and 20th centuries, that in some way we could say and interpret that it
was packed knowledge, packed information, locked on solid objects,
in one case paper books, in other cases, cassette tapes or CDs, in others
videos, but in some way, knowledge was locked,
packed, and it answered to what we could name as a kind of
conception or organizational form and production form and knowledge consumerism
of an enlightened sort, in other words, by packing, by locking knowledge
within physical, solid objects, that would mean information, wisdom,
knowledge, was stable and hardly changeable, it was kept and
stored in libraries, whether at home or in a school, a university,
a public library and the access to it was normally of an individual, isolated sort
It is the case of the reader phenomenon, a reader that faces a printed cultural work
and with contexts and long readings tries to decodify what is there
Nevertheless, this period of cyberspace, this time of
colonized cultural ecosystem, as I said before, by digital
technologies, is taking us to new forms of production,
distribution, storage and consumerism of information and it is what we could refer
to as, unlike that information packed, locked in books, within solid objects,
this one is a knowledge distributed on the web, knowledge of digitalized information, which is everywhere
and that can be accessed to at any time and from any place by simply
using the appropriate technology; this, more than answering to an elightened model of
organization and production of knowledge, we could be talking, as
many authors evidently state, about a time of postmodernity,
characterized by changing knowledge, in constant transformation
it is transparent in the sense of accesibility and mainly
it is social, viral, someone produces
data or information, an opinion and shortly after, it is linked, quickly
transmitted and it is replicated within the net, the social media, etc.
We are going to keep on analysing all this even with more detail.
There are already important contributions about the sociocultural characteristics of
knowledge information in this digital time of the 21st century,
very quickly, to give some details, what distinguishes the
actual era in relation to the formats of culture representation,
is that we have already overcame, those limitations that literacy
carried with it and nowadays, with a digitalized information and
technologies' omnipresence, it is gaining power and increasing relevance,
what is known as new representation formats or new lenguages
of information, such as hypertexts, the reticular organization on the net,
iconographical languages of images and icons,
audiovisual communication, more and more, we express ourselves and we consume more
audiovisual information, the concept of transmedia, that is, a same
narration, a same story can be linked and modulated in different
environments, languages and forms, the concept of gamification...
logically, it gains a lot of increasing relevance what is
known as three-dimensional stages of virtual reality.
On the other hand, another relevant change of those that are taking place is that
we have entered into new rules and forms, obviously, of production, spread
and access to information; now, the traditional vision of an author that hands in a
cultural work to an industry, an editorial company, a discography,
a cinematography so that it packs it and distributes it to the other
consumers, this is entering into a crisis, for this reason, today we talk about increasing
multidirectional communication, that is, between users and producers of
information, in fact, the concept of "prosumer" is appearing, that is, each
individual, each person that is on the net produces and consumes information, that is to say,
I can be author and receiver of that information.
The concept of social media, there is a great questioning on the issue of
copyright, intellectual property, and there is an arising of concepts such as
copyleft against copyright -the traditional concept- the idea of
open and accesible data, also transparent, public data etc., but we cannot
forget that, also, the higher usage of technology
at the same time means we are under the possible vigilance or espionage of
others on what we do on the net.
Another important fact is that the information,
the volume of information, is increasing in such an exponential way, that
we are starting to talk about the concept of big data, big data as a new
raw material not only for commerce, for its industrialized exploitation, but
also as a new ecosystem where to move and such
impressive volume of data, adequately addressed, would become
knowledge on our individual behaviour as
users, social tendencies that are produced, etc. It is something that,
lately, has been presented with great interest.
I was mentioning before the
replicability and viral spreading of information through
those multiple webs on the internet and logically, more and more, we perceive
the existence of what is known as semantic network, that is, other more natural forms
of human language, which allow us to obtain information form the net.
This also leads us to another key point on our current time, which is
interface or what is known as interaction
human-machine is also evolving, and, increasingly, the way in which we
human beings communicate and interact with machines,
is increasingly friendlier, more transparent, more natural, as if we were
interacting with another human being, for this reason, these changes on the interface, from
what it was like before to communicate by means of alphanumeric language
towards means of communication through movement, fingers' movement, touch screen or even
one's voice. There is also a creation of new
ways of human-machine interaction on what is known as augmented reality,
virtual reality and there is even a foreshadowing on technology
entering our own body; biological chips where interaction
is practically total. This is what takes us to another relevant phenomenon which
educators cannot omit, we cannot leave it all on
experts or technicians on computer engineering's hands, the issue is that, increasingly,
technological machines are being more authonomous and intelligent, it is what I was pointing out
at the beginning, we are entering the cybersociety of that fourth industrial revolution
where machines are starting to take authonomous decisions,
without the necesity of human intervention.
Thus, terms as the concept of
artificial intelligence, geolocation, and robotics, are
as I say, events
that are passing from places, let's say... from experimental laboratories
from universities, to almost our daily life now; concepts such as
objects' teletransportation, quantum computation... and this leads us to
the possibility of metaphorically walking towards a society
managed, controlled, dominated perhaps by machines as it is the case of Matrix.
What I mean by this, is that we have entered a time where,
for some reason, humans are growingly dependent on machines, I do not know
if it is good or bad, but it is a cause for reflection. And I will end up saying that all this,
-and this is the last idea of reflection of this first part-, all this lead us to
think that, in some way, this animal we are, this homo sapiens, this primate,
that we have already been some thousands of years on this planet Earth are entering
a transformation and change process, not only of the civilization we
are living in, but of behaviours and ways of acting, thinking and feeling on a
different way. For this reason, the concept of digital citizenship that, as you will see on the
next video, is relevant, very important, in relation to the shaping of
those future citizens of the 21st century and these connected homo sapiens, these
digital citizens, for the first time, with the adequate technology and having it
connected to the net, they are ubiquitous, they can be in many places
and communicate with others in different times, they can access to a huge
amount of information that is on the network as a Babel-library and allows us to
have access from home, from class, from work.
Obviously, it is increasing in a very noticeable way what is considered
communication, social exchange, social media as a great public square
symbolized by the whole planet, this also leads us to the loss of
privacy, everything we do with technology remains registered, it
remains recorded and for this reason, it is exposed to others' gaze and it can be used
perversely, perhaps, against us. At the same time it means that this new
permanently connected citizen almost 24 hours on this digital ecosystem
has to ask himself "who am I?", "how am I seen by others on the net?", "what is my
digital identity?", this also leads us to think we are getting worried by
what is known as "the quantified self" concept, that is to say, all
our behaviour, by means of technology, remains, as I said,
recorded on numbers and thus, our behaviour might be, in some way
measurable according to the quantity of times we do certain actions and we
can neither avoid what it represents for these new kids, youths,
teenagers, who have been born on this transition between the 20th and 21st centuries,
which is the so called "millenial", the millenium generation, which portray
evidently a group of features, of expectations, of
experiences, ultimately, with that culture lived through
digital technology, that is certainly well differentiated from what we had
during our childhood, our youth, 30 or 40 years ago. Thus, educators
need to know, in some way, these new behavioural and cultural
characteristics on the cyberspace of these young people's technology
facing digital technology. This was all, I encourage you to participate on
this MOOC developing the corresponding activity.
