Transcripts
hey thanks for joining me for today's
video today we're going to look at a uh
a new brand this is a fairly newcomer to
the market this is a company called
dabson do Dobson
do I'm not really sure how to pronounce
that uh but I do uh remember that when
they reached out to me uh looking at the
specs on this thing it looked fairly
compelling and it had some interesting
features and I thought it might be worth
a look so we'll find out if it actually
is worth a look it might be something
you want to consider but let's get this
thing out of the box first and kind of
just see what we're dealing with very
heavyduty double walled packaging here
so well packed by the way this is the
DBS 2300 is the uh the model
name all right so one big heavy duty AC
cable now so we've got an xt60 connector
here to a car charger or car accessory
socket and we have got a solar panel
cable with mc4 connectors to xt60 so
obviously the DC input on this is all
xt60 all right let's get the thing out
of the box all right user guide all
right so this is interesting they
actually give you a little maintenance
handbook with uh some guidelines on
storage and maintenance uh there's not a
lot of maintenance involved with these
but it gives you a a way to easily keep
track of that uh there's like a little
quick start guide for uh connecting non
MC C4 type solar panels so it's kind of
nice that they give you that extra bit
of information not a lot of Brands
actually take this extra step to provide
that so that's pretty cool so basic user
manual here all right so seeing some
interesting capabilities in here which
uh kind of jogs my memory as to why I
agreed to review this in the first place
so looking forward to testing this thing
but again we'll get into all those
details in due time let's get this thing
all the way out of the box all right
warranty card on top and it does say two
2
years so kind of an industry standard
2-year warranty would be nice to see if
they were got to up that to four or five
years which is becoming a little bit
more common but two years is still the
most
common all right this is the guy I don't
see any markings on top so I don't know
yet if it has wireless charging but uh
on the front USB port stack and again
separate uh Power connectors here power
power buttons for the USB ports and the
DC ports so it's nice that they separate
those go aead and power this up and see
what we got it's got one of these little
flashlights right here I'm
not I'll single press all right zero
state of charge all right that means I'm
I definitely need to plug this thing in
oh it's just booting up that's actually
much more appropriate
56% so it's got one of these little kind
of flashlight
LEDs not a big deal I really don't use
those kind a whole lot certainly don't
rely on them
all right I'm guessing the AC ports on
this
side yeah so we got our inputs and our
AC outputs here so on the input side
here's our xt60 connector but there's
some cool features here that actually
have physical buttons usually you have
to rely on app support to be able to do
that and uh we'll find out if this if
this does actually support a mobile app
or not let's see what we got here all
right so this is a parallel port so you
can actually connect this to some
expansion batteries quick correction
that particular parallel connector is
actually not for an expansion battery
actually what it does is it allows you
to connect two of these DBS 2300s
together uh along with an optional
parallel junction box to get up to a
combined 4,000 watts of AC power and
4660 WS of capacity so 4 and 1 12 Kow of
battery capacity and this unit does have
as you'll see in a second actual battery
expansion ports enabling you to expand
this thing to over 8 kilowatt hours of
battery capacity with a single one of
these 2300 Master units or over 16 kwatt
hours of battery capacity if you Max the
expansion on two of these 2300s and then
put them in parallel like I was talking
about with that uh parallel port
creating a pretty capable home backup
power solution just keep in mind that
it's still 120 volts and not a 240 volt
split phase system so just be aware of
that okay let's jump back to where we
were and got your 4 AC outputs there all
right so on this side we've got some
battery expansion ports there's two of
them all right so I need to get this
thing on the bench find out how it
actually performs what its real specs
are and uh what you can actually do with
something like this and I'll report back
in just a couple of
seconds all right so I've had a chance
to run this thing through a slew of
functionality and feature testing uh
over the last couple of weeks but before
we look at how that went let's quickly
recap the key specs on this thing that I
haven't mentioned already so let's talk
about pricing on this unit as you may or
may not be aware Amazon is currently
running its fall Prime Days event right
now now so just for October 10th and
11th 2023 so for these two days only you
can get this unit right now on Amazon
for just
$1.99 which is basically just 50 cents
per wat hour which is already an
extremely compelling price point
matching you know just about any of the
best deals you're going to find on a few
of the budget options out there you know
the ones that tend to make a few feature
sacrifices but when you see the specs in
the performance results on this unit
you're going to quickly see that you're
not really giving up anything except for
maybe you know a wireless phone charging
and maybe an I would say an rv30 output
connector and that makes this pricing
all the more compelling and if you
happen to miss out on the prime Day
promotion you can also find this thing
on uh Dobson's website until October
15th 2023 uh for just $100 more than
that Prime Day pricing so that' be
$12.99 so that's still a great price
considering the capabilities that are on
this thing and as per usual I'll put the
links Below in the description uh to
both locations where you can pick this
thing up or get more information if you
want find out which place might give you
the best price oh and the warranty on
this is what Dobson actually calls a 2
plus2 years warranty and what that means
is there's a default 2-year warranty
when you purchase the unit and then if
you register it on their website they'll
extend the warranty coverage for another
two years so basically you're getting a
four-year warranty which is really
excellent but you do have to remember to
go register the purchase to get that now
the weight on this is actually 58 lbs so
it's a it's a densely packed Beast you
know given that it's basically the same
form factor and basically the same size
as most 2,000w power stations but it has
15% more battery capacity packed into
that same kind of form factor it does
have electrical certifications and I'll
put those up on screen somewhere around
here for you rather than read them to
you and the battery chemistry on this
that Dobson is using is actually
semisolid State EV grade lfp or lithium
iron phosphate and it's rated to
maintain at least 80% of its original
capacity even after 4,000 full charge
and discharge Cycles so that means this
unit should have have not only one of
the longest service lifespans in the
portable product space but also one of
the safest battery chemistries that you
can buy right now now the maximum charge
rate via AC is 1,800 watts and you can
vary that with that toggle switch on the
side of the unit as I mentioned but you
can also control that in the mobile app
with even more granularity which is
something that I really really like and
this is the first Power Station that
I've seen that actually has two ways to
to vary those charge rates now in terms
of solar input capacity the 2300 by
itself can take up to 800 watts of solar
with an input range of 12 to 60 volts at
up to 25 amps and I say by itself
because the expansion batteries that are
available for this thing uh do also have
their own 1200 wat solar input
capability independent of the main unit
which is excellent because that means
that your solar input capacity can
expand appropriately as you expand your
battery capacity enabling you to still
fully recharge the full system and well
under a full day of good Sun conditions
even with a a fully maxed out battery
capacity configuration all right so that
took a little longer to cover than I
expected but that's because this thing
has a lot of features to cover so let's
uh let's jump over and see how it fared
in my performance testing let's do a DC
discharge capacity test rated uh battery
capacity is
2330 W hours but as we as we know by now
that we almost never get actual rate of
capacity out of these for a variety of
reasons most of which having to do with
uh uh the battery management system or
the BMS uh having to to control um the
complete state of discharge so that we
don't uh damage the battery cells and it
also has something to do with inverter
efficiency although in this case we're
coming out of the uh DC ports so we're
not using the AC inverter but let's find
out how much capacity we can actually
get out of this unit so let me take the
load off right now we're starting from
zero wat hours they do have that reset
let me turn on the DC ports we are
reading 12.5 volts without a load and
this should be a 10 amp 12volt Port so
let's take this up we'll take it up to
just about maybe 9 and 1 12 amps so
right about there and we will check back
when this thing has shut itself down as
fully depleted and we'll find out how
many wat hours of capacity we were
actually able to get out of the DC Port
all right our first DC discharge
capacity test on this DBS 2300 is done
let's uh zoom in here first of all let's
see if we get anything left yeah 0% so
let's zoom in and see what we got 1,
18236 5 wat hours so that comes out to a
little slightly below average at 78% in
change right now one one cool feature I
wanted to point out on this uh DBS 2300
is on the side here there's a charging
speed button there's a fast and a slow
charge so right now I have it in fast
charge mode and you can see we're
pulling in just about 12200 Watts so if
I switch this down with a nice physical
switch I don't have to get into the app
to do this if I'm not in a hurry and I
don't want to stress the cells as much I
got plenty of time I can switch it down
and it cuts that charging speed in half
so now I'm only charging at about 600
watts and that's just with the flick of
a little switch right here on the side I
love that they did that that's actually
a great feature I wish more power
stations did that all right let's do an
AC discharge capacity test through the
AC inverter on this 2300 I've got it
fully charged up to 100% I've got an oil
heater in here to put about a just under
700 WTS load on this so let me go ahead
and turn the inverter
on go ahead and put a load on that you
see we're registering that right up
there it should give me a countdown I've
got about 2.8 hours estimated let's see
what kind of voltage we're pulling real
quick 19.2 so basically 120 volts so
that's
excellent and let's put this back on
water wat hours and we will log how many
wat hours we can get out of this thing
till it gets 0% so we'll check back when
it's done all right looks like we just
finished up so let me uh plug the meter
into a power source here so we can see
what we got out of our rated
2330 W hours we got
2,31 wat so that is
a uh actually a little above average at
just about 87% of rated capacity so
pretty solid numbers here for this DBS
2300 all right we're fully charged back
up to 100% let's go ahead and do some
load testing on this AC inverter it is
rated for 2200 Watts continuous pure
sign wave output I've got a couple of
oil heaters here and a little space
heater on top of that and we're going to
see if we can sustain that very close to
that if we can get maybe a little bit
more even 2200 Watts for at least 10
minutes and I'm going to put a timer on
once we get it there so let me start
adding some load and see if we can get
that very close to that 2200
Watts this is going to put us over that
we're at 2300 watts and see if we get an
overload so we're about 100 Watts over
the rated all right let's see if it'll
let us get away with this so we'll go a
and start a
timer we'll see how long it lets us run
all right as you can see no issues 10
full minutes at actually a little bit
over the 2200 WT continuous rated so let
me go ahead and stop that and we will
see how far we can push this thing I'm
actually going to take the uh little
space heater out of the equation here so
I can add add a little bit more load
because it's I'm going to take it well
past where we were so I'm going to find
out I assume this will trip and overload
but we'll we'll see how it reacts so let
me go ahead and add a fairly sizable
additional load somewhere around 700
Watts
[Music]
2780
2781
now this does have a 4400 watt surge but
that's only for a very brief period of
time like maybe less than a second to
handle compressor startups and things
like that that are very high power draw
for just a moment just a
spike so I'm actually stunned at this
there it is so that actually ran a solid
what 15 seconds or so uh at 2700 Watts
continuous so very good AC inverter
performance out of this dabson uh DBS
2300 all right got my sacrificial laptop
over here and battery is removed I'm
running a sequential disc read and right
performance test just to give it some
something to do on the uh on the disc
and CPU and uh we are going to test the
UPS mode on this 2300 so I've got uh
grid power coming in here on the right
side and the laptop is plugged in down
here running off the AC inverter so it
should be passing through Power right
now
uh from the grid to the laptop and it
should switch over now um it doesn't
technically have UPS mode it uses
something called EPS mode which is a
little bit slower than what you would
normally qualify as a UPS so this is
definitely not something that you would
want to use in a critical uh like server
wack class type of computer backup
situation um but for home computers it's
probably fine but we'll we'll find out
if it's it is fast enough to keep this
laptop from uh shutting down on us when
we interrupt grid power so let me
simulate a power outage Now by pulling
the grid power connection here from the
side you can see we're inputting about
1,700 WTS right now from the Grid on the
recharge cycle so let me go ahead and
pull that and see what
happens and we switched
over input is now dropped to zero the
laptop did not even flicker so
apparently even under a little bit of
dis load here EPS mode is fast enough to
keep your laptop and your home desktop
machines running as a as a UPS source so
UPS mode confirmed and just so you can
see let me try uh disconnecting my
laptop you can see it went off
immediately so UPS mode confirmed all
right let's see if this 2300 can handle
an 8,000 BTU air conditioner start up so
I've got a a new air 8000 BTU air air
conditioner connected right here I got a
little pigtail AC cable running around
the side just because this block is a
little bit big and the ports are a
little bit low but let me go ahead and
kick this on I've already got the AC
inverter on and make sure the compressor
is going to come on and we'll see if
this thing can handle a compressor
startup from an 8000 BTU air conditioner
so here we
go yeah no problem there
so what happens is when you turn an air
conditioner on like this you get
somewhere around a 2,00 maybe 2300 watt
Spike and then it'll drop back down to
its continuous operating power which in
this case is just uh around 575 Watts or
so so air conditioner startup no problem
all right now we're going to do a guitar
amp test to see if we're getting clean
power out of this uh from the AC
inverter or if we're getting noisy power
so if we're getting noisy power we'll
get a lot of Buzz and hiss out of this
amp so how I test this is I'll first uh
give you a listen and I'll boost the
audio the same amount when I do the
power from the 2300 uh so we can compare
a fair comparison so I'll boost the same
amount in both cases and see if there's
any difference in noise coming out of
the amp all right so I've got it plugged
into the grid power right now let me go
ahead and turn it on and I'll boost the
volume here and I'll put that on screen
and we'll listen really close
all right so super quiet all right so
now I'm going to take the power cord and
I'm going to plug it in to the AC
inverter Outlets here on the 2300 Let Me
Go a and kick it on and I'll boost the
audio by the same amount as when it was
on grid power and we'll listen very
closely personally I cannot tell tell
any difference and I'm standing right in
front of it uh between grid power and
the DBS 2300 power so as far as I'm
concerned the amp test is a definite
pass all right nice and dark outside got
my 400 W portable solar panel connected
to the Dobson DBS 2300 so we're going to
find out if this thing will
automatically begin solar charging in
the morning when the sun just starts to
come up and it's kind of a an important
feature in my opinion so we're going to
see if this will do that or if it will
require us to unplug or replug the solar
connection as some power stations do so
hopefully not I'm going to ahead and put
this uh all the way
off and uh yeah and then we were going
to check it in the
morning and see what's going on if
anything all right it's a little after
9:00 a.m. in the morning the sun is um
just behind the tree there a lot of
clouds so we're not getting a lot of
amperage out of there and there's not
really any direct sun on the panels but
it should be generating something uh so
let's take a look and see if we got
anything going on
here all right yeah okay so it detected
our solar input and it is pulling in 24
Watts hasn't done much in the way of
charging cuz we started at 75 but that's
just because uh it's been very thick
clouds that are just starting to burn
off this morning but yeah we are getting
a charge now I didn't have to do
anything here and it just started
charging on its own which is exactly
what you want to see all right so as you
saw the DBS 2300 does have excellent
performance characteristics and lives up
to its spec now it did come in slightly
below average on that DC usable capacity
test uh but I do have to say that that's
becoming a fairly frequent occurrence
especially uh with my particular test
setup on higher capacity power stations
and I suspect that the reason for that
uh is because my DC capacity tester can
only pull a fairly modest about maybe
130 Watts or so max which which means
that those tests are going to run longer
on these larger battery capacity power
stations and in the course of those
longer run times you are going to get
more heat built up in those 12volt
cigarette lighter connectors and that
heat buildup leads to more resistance
and increases power loss so I wouldn't
be particularly concerned about that
slightly lower number on the DC side
especially considering that the usable
capacity through the AC inverter was
actually well above average I did also
test the inverter's no load draw so how
much power is it going to consume when
you're not powering a load and I found
that it consumes about 30 Watts or so
and which equates to about 1.5% of uh
rated battery capacity per hour and like
all AC inverters you generally don't
want to leave them running unless you're
actively using them or you're just kind
of wasting power but considering that
this is a 2200 watt inverter 30 watts is
actually pretty efficient and do keep in
mind that you can completely configure
the auto shut off timeouts in the mobile
app so you have complete control over
all of that stuff so my bottom line on
this DBS 2300 from debson is that when
you consider the build quality on on
this unit along with the extremely
wellth thought out battery capacity
options and all of the other features
really that you typically only find in
Fairly premium priced units and let's
not forget that 4year warranty I think
this power station kind of stands out to
me as a bit of a sleeper in the portable
power station product space you simply
wouldn't expect this power station to be
this capable at basically 50 cents a wat
hour so I think if you're in the market
for a portable power station right now
and you have a budget for somewhere in
that say 12 to 13 or $1,400 range the
dabson DB s 2300 gives you just about
the biggest bang for the buck that I
think that I've seen in the past few
months and do keep in mind that the
promotional pricing on this thing right
now is only good for a limited time so
uh I'd consider acting quickly if you're
serious about picking one up okay I
think that's a wrap I do hope you found
at least something helpful in this video
maybe learned a thing or two and uh if
you did please consider clicking that
like button for me I'd really very much
appreciate that and if you're not
already subscriber maybe consider
subscribing as well we got a bunch of
cool projects still in video que and a
bunch of cool products
uh maybe you'll find something in those
videos or something that I've already
got on the channel helpful in some way I
do offer my sincere thanks for stopping
by and watching this video and I do hope
you'll consider joining me for the next
one which is coming very soon uh until
then have fun out
there
