Hey guys, I'm João Victor, I'm from Brasilia but I moved here to Rio de Janeiro in 2011
in all these years I've always really enjoyed exploring the city Especially in the last 5 years,
when we created the treasures of Brazil and during All this time I have always shared
my experiences with you, both here on YouTube and on Instagram. By the way, if you
are not yet subscribed to this channel, click below, subscribe and also follow us on Instagram
@TesourosDoBrasil. I'm in love with the Marvelous City and decided to combine all my tips
in one video. In it I will show the main attractions and others that are not so obvious! My name is
João Vitor and this is Tesouros do Brasil. Let's start this video by showing the
city's main attractions. It's no wonder that they are the most popular tours, in fact they are incredible places that
deserve to be visited. But look, if you want to avoid the Obvious, stay until the end of this video and I'll
give you some great options. The Christ was elected one of the seven wonders of the modern world, inaugurated
on October 12, 1931, the day of the patron saint of Brazil, Our Lady of Aparecida, the Christ is
a 30 m high art deco sculpture that stands on an 8 m pedestal . The sculpture is hollow, made of
reinforced concrete and covered with small soapstone triangles. You can get here in
two ways: by van, which leaves from different parts of the city, and by train, which passes through the Tijuca forest,
leaving from Cosme Velho station, which is in the neighborhood of the same name. In addition to the impressive sculpture
up here, you have a beautiful view of the city and you can see the main
tourist attractions. Another symbol of the city is the Pão de Açúcar cable car park, which opened in
1912 and was the third cable car in the world. It was a super ambitious project for the time. It connects
the Urca neighborhood to Morro da Urca and Pão de Açúcar, there are two sections. The Cable Car got
its name because the first model of the cable car looked like the trams that circulated around the city.
One of the best times to visit is during sunset. Up here they have a
great leisure infrastructure, you can have a snack, have a beer and even do a little
shopping. Yes, that's me on top of the cable car, but that's too long a story to explain
in this video. Every time a friend or relative is visiting the city and says they want to
meet me, I will come up with a tour of the Botanical Gardens. The place is beautiful, super pleasant to take
a walk and breathe some fresh air. Furthermore, it is full of stories, it was founded by Dom João VI
with the aim of acclimatizing plants that had some commercial value, a kind of laboratory.
Over the years this purpose was changed and today it is an important Preservation
and research Center that has approximately 3,000 plant species. And close to the
Botanical Garden is Parque Lage, an Italian-style palace built in the middle of the forest. It was
commissioned by Henrique Lage for his wife, the Italian opera singer Gabriella Besanzoni, he
wanted to make her feel at home even in Rio de Janeiro. And what house huh? Today the palace houses
an art school and a café. To visit the palace you need to get a
free ticket on the website or get a table in the cafe. The gardens here are also beautiful and have free entry.
Chilean artist Jorge Selaron, from piece to piece of tile, transformed an
ugly staircase between the neighborhoods of Lapa and Santa Teresa into one of the most visited spots in the city. This
was a project that he started back in the 90s and was interrupted with his death in 2013. Look, if
you want to visit this staircase with fewer people, the tip is to come during the week and very early in the morning. These
multicolored steps are highly disputed. Climbing the stairs takes you to the charming
neighborhood of Santa Teresa, but the coolest way to get there is by taking one of the famous
yellow cable cars that are the symbol of the neighborhood. They leave the city center and wind their way
through the streets of Santa Teresa. The tour is a delight. Up there are many options of bars
and restaurants for you to enjoy. The tip is to take this trip on the weekends,
when the neighborhood is busiest. In a corner of the most famous beach in Brazil is the
Copacabana Fort, a military structure that was built where the Chapel of
Our Lady of Copacabana previously stood, which gave its name to the neighborhood. From here you have a beautiful view of the
entire Copa coastline. Where there was an old fortification, today there is a museum and along the Fort Wall
are spread out the popular tables of two restaurants, Confeitaria Colombo and Café 18
do Forte, which are great options for you to have a snack while enjoying the view. Entrance costs R$10
and is free on Tuesdays. Without a doubt, Rio de Janeiro's beaches are the
city's biggest attractions. I'm one of those people who, if I can, will spend the entire weekend at the beach. Each one
has its own particularities, but here I separated the lively ones and the calmer ones into two groups.
In the busy group I put Copacabana, Ipanema and Leblon beaches in the South Zone
[Music]
And in the West Zone, the excitement is at Praia da Barra, near Jardim
Oceânico. These are beaches that are located in busy neighborhoods and they end up being quite
popular. Also on sunny weekends, they are crowded. If you
want to escape the crowds, the ideal is to go there in the middle of the week and in the morning. On these beaches you
will find a structure with simple tents on the sand that sell drinks, rent umbrellas and
chairs. Prices vary a lot, so be sure to ask before you pick up, and it's worth
haggling. Along the promenade of all these beaches there are more structured kiosks
with bathrooms and that serve food. My suggestion is that you explore these
beaches and see which suits you best. In my case, I love
Ipanema beach. For those who want to enjoy a beach with less people or to appreciate
the sound of the sea, the plan is to get away from the
more populated regions and the west zone is perfect for that, that's where the beaches of
[Music] Reserva
Prainha
and Grumari
are, they are beautiful beaches surrounded by nature but hey, on a sunny weekend, no
beach is safe and even those are very busy besides the beaches, Rio de Janeiro is
full of mountains and forests, a more beautiful setting than the other for you to explore
One of the most famous places to enjoy the sunset is the Arpoador rock in a corner
of Ipanema beach the sun goes down people start appearing the sky changes
color and when the sun disappears over the horizon everyone claps. I think this tradition is really cool.
at the other end of this strip of sand in Leblon, at the foot of Morro
Dois Irmãos there's a viewpoint that almost no one knows about and from there you can get a
beautiful view of the city, you can get there by car and enjoy the view without sweating your
shirt. The Tijuca National Park has almost 4000 hectares and is spread across throughout the city
of Rio de Janeiro. several attractions such as Christ the Redeemer are
part of it. in the Forest sector you will find several attractions such as the Taunay waterfall.
to better explore the region, its Trails and caves I suggest taking a
tour with a guide. one of the best ways to experience
all this nature is to take on the different trails that cut through the city's forests Rio has many options
with different types of difficulty Let's start with the easiest ones and increase
the level. Beyond the Cable Car there is a way to get to the top of Morro da Urca by taking
a light trail, here the thing is that it is very vertical with many steps but
with patience you can get to the top and enjoy your reward. Look, there
was an old story that whoever climbed it you could go down the cable car for free
But that's not true, if you want to go down the cable car you'll have to pay.
I always say this, the Pedra Bonita trail has one of the best effort to view coefficients because
the trail only takes about 30 minutes and There is no technical section and the view from there is
unique, unfortunately on that day the weather didn't cooperate But trust me, the view is
beautiful. Dois Irmãos is one of the icons of Rio and there is a trail to get up
there. first you need to go up to the Vidigal favela, the adventure starts here because
the most common transport is the motorcycle taxi and then you have to face a 1 km trail that takes about
40 minutes to 1 hour ,depending on your physical fitness. on the way you already enjoy
some incredible views but it's at the top that your jaw drops. Look at this.
How about mixing trails with paradisiacal beaches? take plenty of water, sunscreen and bathing suit
to explore the trail of the wild beaches that bear this name because they are beaches that are very
isolated and you can only get to them by walking or by sea, which is usually very rough, so
the trail is the most appropriate option. You will cross the Meio, Funda and Inferno beaches, one is
more beautiful than the other, these beaches are in the west zone, almost on the edge of the city. look, this is a
very exhausting trail when I said to bring sun screen and water, I mean it!
Even today, This was the most challenging trail I've ever done in Rio de Janeiro. A Pedra da Gávea stands
out in the city's skyline, getting to the top requires physical preparation and determination, the climb takes an
average of about 3 hours, depending on your physical fitness, it is a trail with some very
technical sections. I suggest you do it with a well-prepared tour guide to act If there is any
serious unforeseen event, the view from the top is absurd, it's very beautiful and you can get an overview
of the city from both the South Zone and the West Zone But to be very honest, I'm going to say something, I'm
glad I recorded my climb because It was so exhausting for me that I don't think I
'm going back there anytime soon, but if you like hiking, you like a challenge. Pedra da Gávea is your place.
Besides the promenades, the city has two super nice places that are great for
you to enjoy a bike ride. Aterro do Flamengo has this name because
it was actually an area created from successive landfills of Guanabara Bay, so don't
be alarmed by the fact that the Oceanside Av. is very far from the beach, the project designed by
Lota Soares Macedo was opened in 1965 and is the perfect place to enjoy a
sunny day. here you can stroll along the track that winds through the Burle Marx's gardens, visit
the Museum of Modern Art, the Carmen Miranda museum or simply sit in the shade and see people pass by.
Another place I love is Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas, which is in the south zone, very
close to the beaches of Ipanema and Leblon, the circuit to go around it
is 7.5 km long and is a delight to do on a bike along the way. you will be
surprised by new perspectives of the Rio. on the weekends
people love to gather friends and family to have a picnic on the banks of the
lagoon. the nightlife in Rio is very busy The city is also always hosting big
shows and festivals and there is no best place in the world to enjoy a good samba, Lapa is a traditional
neighborhood in the central part of the city where great options are concentrated for those who want to enjoy the
night. Here you will find many bars with live music , nightclubs, traditional concert halls such as Circo Voador and
Fundição Progresso is attractive to all
audiences. talking about samba in Rio is complicated, it's a topic that deserves a video of its own, but just to help
those who want to enjoy a samba, I'm going to give three options in the most central region of the
city, currently the Beco do Rato is considered one of the most traditional and important strongholds
of Samba in Rio de Janeiro, it was opened in 2005 in a less popular corner of Lapa and
today it has become a point of reference for those who want to enjoy quality samba in the city
Vinícius de Moraes sings that samba was born in Bahia, but some historians say that it
was born here in Pedra do Sal, Pedra do Sal is in a region called little Africa by Heitor
dos Prazeres, in this place he and other great samba players met, such as Donga, João da Baiana,
Pixinguinha and the matriarch of Samba aunt Ciata. the most traditional samba circle takes place on
Mondays but currently Pedra do Sal has been so popular that from Thursday to Monday it is
very busy. Oh and next door, about 100 m away is Largo da Prainha which is also hot these days.
the most purists will turn their noses at this suggestion, but the rio Scenarium, located in Lapa is
a concert hall aimed at tourists that offers a complete and high
quality experience. the rio Scenarium operates in a 19th century mansion decorated with lots of antiques. The
place is beautiful they offer a musical program that ranges from samba roots to
for the chorinho, when you're there out of nowhere a samba school appears, it's really cool and on Saturdays
there's feijoada. another really cool option here in Rio de Janeiro for those who want a nightlife
is to take a walk along some streets of the city that there is a high concentration of bars and
restaurants and choose one that suits you best. in Leblon the buzz goes on Rua Dias Ferreira from
Monday to Monday this street is very busy but it is on the weekends that the activity becomes
more intense, it starts with the crowd arriving later from the beach and stay into the night.
in Barra da Tijuca is Rua Olegário Maciel which concentrates people who want to enjoy the night. the
sidewalks are full of tables of people passing by there is live music in the bars it's really
cool. and a bonus, because I don't have any images, is Rua Arnaldo Quintela in Botafogo, which
is really cool. Copacabana is the most touristic neighborhood in the city, there's no shortage of options
for bars and restaurants, there's a region called Baixo Copa, at Rua Bolívar
and Aires Saldanha has a large concentration of places for you to sit and have
a drink and if you want live music the plan is to walk along the promenade and choose a
kiosk with the attraction you like, it has everything samba, pagode, mpb, and even a
forró.
strolling through the most touristic places in Rio Someone might approach you offering a
full day tour out of the city, look, Some are a bad options, but these are my
suggestions, the tours that I think are worth it. see this sea, this sea deserves that you get
in the car, get in a van to Arraial do Cabo to get to know it, Arraial is about 3 hours
from Rio and has several incredible beaches, but in this FD tour the plan is to take one of the traditional
boat trips that pass by Praia do Farol, blue grotto, and small beaches of Atalaia. the water is usually
very cold but this perfect scenery deserves a swim. How about going up the mountain to enjoy the charming Imperial city? Petrópolis gets its name because
the Summer Palace was built there
of the imperial family. Dom Pedro II, his family and a good part of the court went up the mountains
to escape the heat of Rio de Janeiro, today the palace was transformed into a museum and the city
has several other attractions such as the São Pedro de Alcântara Cathedral, the Crystal Palace
, museum of Santos Dumont who lived in this cool house and Avenida Koeller with its
impressive mansions. the journey to Petrópolis takes approximately 1 hour and it's super worth spending
the day there. on the other side of Guanabara Bay is Niterói, a city that has a combination
of incredible cultural, gastronomic and nature attractions. Nikiti, for the most intimate ones, have
several museums the MAC Museum of Contemporary Art designed by Oscar Niemeyer is the great symbol of the
city. You also need to visit the beaches of the Oceanic Region. I have lived in Rio for 12 years and only
went to explore this region not long ago and I fell in love, it's a more beautiful beach than the
other. Rio de Janeiro is definitely not just a beach, the city center is very rich and deserves
a visit. It was in this square that the Portuguese royal family landed in Brazil in 1808, fleeing
from Napoleon's armies, Rio until then was a small city and became the seat of the
empire. In this region you can find important historic buildings such as the Imperial Palace
where Dom Pedro I and Pedro II were hailed and the old church
where they were Crowned. on Saturdays, the traditional antiques fair at
Praça XV takes place here. one of the most imposing and beautiful buildings in Rio de Janeiro, the Municipal Theater was
opened in 1909, it is considered the main show house in Brazil and one of the most
important in South America. there is no way to pass by it and not be impressed, its project was
inspired by the Garnier opera in Paris. for its decoration, some of the most
illustrious artists of the time were called upon, even European artisans were recruited to create the stained glass windows and
mosaics. to visit the inside of the Municipal Theater
on a guided tour you need to buy your tickets at the box office of the
theater itself. it looks like a set from the Harry Potter film but it is the Royal Portuguese reading room
an institution founded in 1837 by Portuguese immigrants, political refugees, to promote
culture among the Portuguese community of the then capital of the empire, the library
has the largest collection of Portuguese works outside of Portugal. And contrasting with
the historic buildings of the center we have the very modern museum of tomorrow designed by the
Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava. the museum of tomorrow is a different science museum, through
several immersive exhibitions it proposes that visitors reflect on the future of humanity.
close to the morning museum also in the Port Zone, is the AquaRio
a marine aquarium with 26,000m of built area and 4.5 million liters of
water. It is the largest marine aquarium in South America and has more than 10,000 animals
from 350 different species on display. The biggest attraction is the main tank with 3.5 liters of
water, passing through the tunnel that crosses this enclosure is fantastic and leaves adults and children with their
jaws dropped. And for those looking for a free cultural attraction, the Centro Cultural
Banco do Brasil is a great option located in a beautiful building in the city center, always hosts
Great exhibitions. more than just Catholic temples, the colonial churches of Rio de Janeiro are
unique examples of the art and architecture of that time. Regardless of your faith or
lack thereof, these gems are worth visiting for the Brazilian Baroque, the Monastery of São Bento
was founded in 1590 by two monks who came from the monastery of Bahia, the place impresses with the
richness of the wooden carvings that decorate the entire interior, despite being known as the Monastery
of São Bento, the correct name is the Church from Our Lady of Monserrat. Our Lady of Candelária Church
It is located in a prominent place between the lanes of one of the city's main avenues,
the temple in this grandeur that we see now took more than 100 years to complete, the construction of the
Dome was a great challenge for time and for a long time, Candelária was the tallest building in the
city. This is the Church of Nossa Senhora da Lapa dos Mercadores, which is located in a region of the center
known as Old Rio. those who walk around the area without paying attention may not even notice it because it is squeezed
between mansions from past centuries. the church has just undergone a complete restoration
Beautiful. our next church is probably the most important in Brazil due to its history
It was once the city's cathedral it was the Royal Chapel, stage of the acclamation of King Dom João VI and the
coronation of two Emperors Dom Pedro I and Dom Pedro II. the Church of Our Lady of
Carmel or the Old See as it is also known, was the Cathedral of Rio de Janeiro until 1976 when
another temple was built. in one of the busiest areas of the city at the top of the hill of
Santo Antônio is the Church of the Third Order of São Francisco da Penitência, this church is
a masterpiece of Brazilian Baroque and even the locals don't know it. from the outside,
it is very simple but has one of the most sensational interiors of the colonial churches in
Brazil, if you You've made it this far, congratulations, you already have great tips on what to do in Rio de Janeiro,
but I finally chose to show you some attractions that go beyond the obvious, which are really cool,
but first, take the opportunity to subscribe to the channel and leave a like on this video, it helps us so much for
oh, and follow us on Instagram too @TesourosDoBrasil, thank you very much for your
support and let's move on to the tips. in addition to the trails I showed you earlier, there are two others that are not
as well known but are worth doing, the trail of Catacumba Park is located in Lagoa Rodrigo de
Freitas, an area with easy access. Up there, there are two viewpoints with beautiful views of the city. I think it's
really crazy that almost no one comes here and I also wanted to show you the Mirante do
Caeté trail, which is located in Prainha in the west zone from up there you have a unique perspective of this region of the
city. how about venturing out for a surf lesson in its birthplace in
Brazil? Arpoador is that place I mentioned earlier that is great for enjoying
the sunset, also has great waves for beginners and that's why several surf schools are
concentrated here. Look, if I can stand up in the first class, you
can too. Did you know that you can have a legitimate backstage carnival experience?
Carnival Experience from the samba school Grande Rio presents the
universe of samba in Rio de Janeiro, behind the scenes of the creation of the show, as well as the
history of samba and the Rio Carnival, all from inside their warehouse in the city center. It's
a really cool tour, especially around Carnival time when the warehosue is full
of allegories and costumes. The Tijuca lagoon, which is at the beginning of Barra da Tijuca, has 10 islands, one of
which is called Ilha da Gigoia and when you disembark on it, it seems like you're in another
city. here the vibe is super calm, it's a very bucolic place, approximately 3,000 inhabitants live here
and among the houses you can find cafes, restaurants and in the last few years
it became a very popular past time for cariocas and tourists.
Rio de Janeiro was the first city in the world to become a Unesco world heritage site due to its
Urban cultural landscape. One of the best ways to see why is by taking a
boat trip around Guanabara Bay. from the sea, you have a unique and fascinating perspective of the
city. the tour of the Tijucas islands leaving from Barra da Tijuca towards the
Alfavaca and Pontuda Islands. The place is stunning with crystal clear waters and lots of marine life
[Music] on the second island Alfavaca you can go on a small trail that
takes you to a diving point. Man, what a
fantastic experience. Paquetá is a neighborhood in Rio de Janeiro that is located on an island about an
hour by ferry from the city center, here it almost feels like we took a trip back in time. the island
