🧺 On-Premises Laundry Equipment and Layout
This paragraph discusses the various components and layout of an on-premises laundry facility, typically found in hotels. It begins with an overview of the laundry space, which includes a main door, a linen room for storing laundered linen, and specific areas for different tasks. The 'soiled linen area' is where dirty linen is collected and weighed before being placed in washing machines. The script mentions the use of front-loading automatic washing machines for commercial purposes and smaller machines for urgent guest laundry. A chemical cupboard is also present for storing laundry chemicals like detergent and bleach. A sink area and a spotting unit for stain removal are also part of the setup. Post-washing, linen is sent to hydro extractors to remove excess water, which is more efficient than the extraction done by washing machines. The script also touches on the newer models of washing machines that combine washing and extraction functions. The linen then proceeds to ironing, pressing, and folding before being stored in the linen room. For items like towels that cannot be ironed, dryers are used to completely dry them. The paragraph concludes with a brief mention of upcoming discussions on ironing equipment and the laundry process.
👕 Ironing Equipment and Laundry Process

Transcripts
In previous part we learned about
laundry & it types?
Laundry is a place where
we do washing, drying, ironing,
stain removal and dry cleaning.
Now if a hotel has in-house/
On-premises laundry, then what
are the equipment they might have.
Also, along with this, I’ll also give
a layout of on-premises laundry.
Let’s suppose this is the laundry
space, here is the main door connected
with the corridor, and laundry is also
interconnected with linen room.
Where we store all linen once it is laundered.
Let’s start from the beginning,
here we have soiled linen area,
where we collect and dump all soiled linen.
In this area, we have a weighing scale
also, to measure the weight of the soiled linen.
Soiled linen weight is measured before
putting them in washing machine,
as we know washing machine
have a capacity raging from
7 to 200 kg and even more.
As told, after weighing soiled line
in put in Washing Machines,
the large washing machines in
laundry we also call them washers.
For commercial purpose we use
front loading automatic washing machines.
You will also find small capacity
washing machine for washing
fewer clothes; specially used
for urgent guest laundry.
For various chemicals such as
detergent, bleach, softeners,
here we have a chemical cupboard
or small cabinet.
Along with these we have sink area.
To clean some small spots, or
stains on the fabric.
For spotting, or stain removal, now a days
we also have a machine, called spotting unit.
This machine consist of a spotting board,
a spotting gun, and a steam attachment.
A board, is a table that is partly solid and
partly perforated.
After the linen is washed, it is put into
a hydro extractor. Here hydro, mean water
and extract mean to pull out something.
So hydroextractors are used to pull out
the water from the clothes.
The internal drum in the extractor spins
so fact that the excess water is
removed from the linen or clothes.
Well wait, but automatic washing machines
also do the same thing, then
why we need extra hyro extractor.
True, Washing machines have
lower RPM, mean their
spinning power is less
so only extract 60-70 percent of the water,
while the hydro extractors are
specifically designed for
water extraction and have
higher RPM speed,
mean spins faster than washing machine,
removing around 80-90 percent of the water.
Now after hydro Extractor,
linen can be directly sent for ironing.
Now this leftover moisture of
10-20 percent is good for ironing,
and also get evaporated during ironing.
Note: now a days we also
have more powerful washing machines,
with dual functions of
washer cum hydro extractor.
In that case, you don’t need to
purchase hydro extractor separately.
Now after hydro extraction.
The linen is directly sent for
ironing/pressing. And after ironing,
folded and sent to linen room for storage.
We will talk about ironing equipment later.
Now if the fabric cannot be
ironed such as towels
(bath towels, bathrobes, hand towels, face towels).
For that we have Dryers.
Hydro extractor leave
some 10-20 percent moisture,
but dryers, dry them completely.
After the towels are pulled out
from hydro extractors, they are
dropped into Dryers.
It uses a rotating drum to tumble
or toss clothes as they dry,
hence also called tumble drier,
tumbling towels in a rotating cylinder
through which heated air is passed.
Towel are completely dry.
After that towels are folded
and sent to linen room.
Now let’s talk about different
Ironing equipment, and attachments.
These ironing machine either be
operated through electricity or steam.
First types of ironing machine is
Flat Bed Press: It has two beds,
the lower bed is fixed and called buck,
and top flat-bed is flexible and called head.
When we press peddle,
the head comes down in contact
with buck and anything placed
between gets ironed.
Similar to this press,
we also have steam press.
Similarly two beds, head and buck,
but it also incorporates steam jets.
The steam helps to relax the
fibers in the fabric, making it easier
to smooth out wrinkles.
Then we have Collar and Cuff press,
The collar and cuffs of a shirt are
placed on these.
Head has the shape same as buck,
when pressed over the buck applies
uniform pressure on the collar and cuffs.
Similarly, we have Sleeve Press,
as the name suggest, it is particularly
designed for pressing the sleeves.
The operator places the garment
sleeve onto the pressing surface,
adjusts it as needed, and then activates
the press and hot steam air fills into
the sleeves, pressing them against
the head and removing all wrinkles.
Now that we’ve talked about
cuffs & collar press and Sleeve press.
Next we have, Suzie/Genies,
specifically used for jackets or coats.
This consist of an open-mesh
nylon air form bag that shapes garments.
The garment is draped on it, then
steam and air timers are pre-set.
A foot switch starts the steam cycle.
Penetrating steam softens and
relaxes the garment fibers, and irons it.
You may also find, Steam Cabinets,
these are the large boxes where
we can hang linen such as curtains,
blankets, bedspreads.
Steam is passed through these
removing the wrinkles from these articles.
And also who is not familiar with this,
Hand Iron and Ironing board.
After ironing the articles,
needs to be folded,
for that we have Folding machines,
previously we just had machines
which hold one end of the linen articles,
and makes it easy to fold easily
by the workers. But now a days
we also have fully automatic garment
folding machines.
Just put the garment, and they fold it.
For ironing the large size linen
specifically bedsheets, duvet covers,
table clothes and similar articles,
we have Calender Machine.
They consist of a series of rollers
in pairs, connected by a number
of narrow conveyor belts.
The speed of the rollers is adjustable.
The sheet is fed in manually.
After folding, the hotel linen and
employees uniforms are sent
to linen and uniform room.
And guest’s laundry is collected
by Laundry valet, who will pack
and deliver them back to the guest.
some of the fabrics or garment,
cannot be washed in washing machines
or with water. For these, we have
dry cleaners or dry cleaning machines.
Lastly we have various Linen trolleys,
carts and working tables.
Now here, at the entrance you might find,
Laundry In charge or manager’s cabin
and next to this you may find
Laundry valet space either
a cabin or a long desk with
wardrobes at the back.
Valet is the employee who is
primarily responsible for
handling guest laundry.
Well guys, I hope now you
have basic idea of,
laundry layout and equipment used.
In the upcoming video,
I’ll explain the laundry cycle or process.
So stay tuned on Hospitality Broadcast.
