Transcripts
uh if we could start with Team use any
changes at all to the squad You' got
available um no a few we had a few bumps
and bruises from uh from the game
against uh against Everton couple of
lads didn't quite make it for for
availability for the for the game on
Tuesday um Everybody um got through the
the Tuesday game uh okay so um yeah the
the boys will be out a little while
including Yanik vestard is um still not
available for the weekend so we were're
as we were really no no change from from
the at the last Premier League game um
well if we could just touch on quickly
on that that game at wara you spoke
afterwards about the frustrations heard
from from some supporters during our
game um and needing perhaps to earn some
credit with them um we all want to feel
loved so does it affect you personally
when you hear things like well I think
like as a manager you're never you're
never too far away from um from
challenging times from from criticism
you know sometimes it's fair sometimes
it's unfair and that's just the uh the
life that you you have to live and um
and for me I've always said if you if
you if you don't like that then you know
don't don't take these jobs in in in the
first place so um so you know I I accept
that I think um as I said I'll just
repeat what I said the the the other
night I will always um try and
understand fans perspective and and
opinions and and my first initial
reaction is is not to be too defensive
is is to to see the rationale of why I
feeling may be um the way it is and then
um um and then in the end try and try
and do something to do something about
it so so I'm no different to to anybody
else um in terms of um like I said never
being too far away from um from some
questioning or criticism of challenging
and um if it's up my my door at this
moment in time then it's one I accept um
but I but I also see it as in these
moments as a as a um a good opportunity
to show the real um so the real me in
this case to show you know how well I
want to do here how um how strong I am
as a character and and obviously you
want to show how good you are as a coach
as well so um um it's it's easy to to be
really visible and to talk a lot when
things are going well I think the real
um leaders and and and strong characters
are the ones that that face up to to
difficult times and if if this is one
then you know here I am and um you know
looking forward to um
um you know to continuing to work hard
and to get ready for these big games
that we're playing in in the Premier
League and and trying to thrive on on on
the challenge of it so um um nothing's
changed in terms of um you know getting
back from the game the other night and
the preparation for um for for Arsenal
on the weekend in terms of our work
ethic and our application I've said
every time we spoke I say the players
every day their attitude and application
engagement is brilliant we've just got
to try and um keep building because
that's what we're trying to do to to get
the results and performances that that
that we want but um as I as I stand or
sit here now I've never been more
determined um since I took the job than
what I am now to to to do well and um
and in the end that's what you want to
do you know supporters pay a lot of
money you know if any reaction you get
from from a supporter is authentic is
because that's how they feel about the
football club and you have to respect
that um I'll I'll never get too too high
from from praise um and I'll never get
too low from C ISM I'll only get
motivated to um to try and improve and
and um when feelings are are not as we
want them then I'll take personal
responsibility in trying to change that
five games into the Premier League
season three points on the board um is
this your toughest test yet do you
think yeah definitely I think it would
have been even if the the the results
and points have been been different you
know it's um we're coming up against an
incredible team that um
uh have been in great form now for for a
number of years and um have been you
know really challenging
and uh for for Premier Leagues and Cup
competitions and um uh and in in other
Seasons they they they would have SP
certain in the league the points they
got they you know they would have would
have won the league so um so yeah we
we're coming up coming up against a um a
really really tough opponent uh in their
home as well um but it's um it's it's
it's these games um that you've really
got embrace you really got to sort of go
in there with the anticipation of
succeeding and and not you know fearing
failure you know and um that's really
what we we want to do with our approach
and back ourselves and um you know
wouldn't be a could couldn't be a better
time to get the result that we're all
craving for so um yeah we uh we really
want to go for it you've experienced
what it takes to beat a Mel oreta side
when you were at Forest or be that was a
a home game as you say this one away
makes it even tougher how do you
approach it there's that old cliche of
parking the bus is that the best way to
approach it well for sure everything our
game has got to be got to be right
there's there's no doubt about that with
the ball without the ball um the game
management you know set pieces you know
they scored some some some very
important goals from set pieces this
year as everybody has seen and it's been
well well highlighted and documented so
every part of our game has to be um has
to be close to perfect if not perfect so
so we appreciate that including the
mentality in the to the game and and the
belief so um so with all of that in mind
we of course need to be very mindful of
of where um you know Arsenal strengths
are and there's a lot of them but we but
we've got to back ourselves to be able
to deal with that and have the impact in
the game that that that we want with our
way as well and um um that's that's
that's where we're at and um you know we
we like I said already we got to really
believe in ourselves we got to back
ourselves and and go for it when the
game comes what did you make to that
last performance against Manchester City
have you ever seen something quite like
what we saw in that second half and the
way they sat back like that um well yeah
it was it was an intriguing game for for
sure um and you know we've played
another game since watched the game
closely last night against against B
wanders so um yeah they they they like I
said you know our focus is on us and
we've we've got to do everything um
really really well in in in the game um
but you know this is the level we want
to be at these are the games we want to
be playing and but we want to be be
playing them with with the right
attitude the right me mentality and like
I said with the the ambition of of being
able to succeed and um you know it it'll
uh like I said if we can get the result
that that we're craving for then there's
no better time thanks St thanks Kirsty
see you n from hi NZ hi St okay yeah
good mate and Steve is the gulf and the
gap between the very top teams in the
Premier League and teams like Leicester
and the others that are trying to
establish themselves or reestablish
themselves in the Premier League is it
the biggest it's ever been and how do
you bridge that well I don't know if
it's the biggest it's ever been but this
you know that if you look at um you know
a lot has been said about us um not
being able to to to win any of our first
five games which is true and we own that
but we're not the only ones you know and
if you look at um you know if you look
at the league table so far after only a
handful of games you know there's
there's a big chunk of teams that are
you know a point or two away from from
each other or result away from each
other from changing good good or bad so
so it's certainly sort starting to form
um that way um but um but for sure the
the know guys that have been competing
at the top end for for not just one or
two years but for a number of years um
are really sort of well oiled machines
that have been put together with huge
investment and uh and great structure
and and um you know they you know they
when you come up against them they're
really really tough games there's no
there's no no doubt about that but but
all of these games you can win all of
these games you can lose of course and
um you know I don't think you can go
into a game Thinking okay well they're
right at the top of the league so you
know let's just get through it you got
to go in there uh as I said with with
the intention you can really achieve in
the game and and that's what we want to
do do on the weekend so um is it a gulf
um some people may call it that but it
doesn't mean that that any game can't be
won or lost you know we've seen that so
many times before so you know we'd love
to go to to Arsenal the weekend and get
a result and um you know we've got to
back ourselves to do
that hopefully that happens but your
season is not going to be defined on
winning at Arsenal is it it's the games
that come after that and with your
experience at Forest keeping them up in
similar circumstances to hear you
obviously got the knowledge and know how
how confident are you that you and your
coaching staff can do that and make sure
this is a premier league play yeah well
I think first and foremost yeah I don't
we're not going to go into any game
seeing it as a free hit or or a bonus
game and things like that I think that I
can't think of anything worse than than
having a mentality uh like like that and
if you if I as a leader gave that off to
the players what how could they ever
believe anything that I say so so that
needs clarifying that we're absolutely
going to commit to this game on the
weekend even though a lot of odds will
be against us and expectations and all
of that will be what they are um that
all that's fine internally you know
we've really got to go back ourselves to
to to to you know go and Achieve and get
the right result in uh in the game in
terms of the bigger picture and the
objectives yeah you know we um we really
beli in in what we can achieve uh this
year and I think you know it's it's
never or very rarely is it playing
sailing for a for a newly promoted team
um to um just be very comfortable
throughout Premier League season you
know and I know you know Leicester
should should never be in the
championship we know that and everything
about the club is is premier league and
we're back here now but we are still uh
coming off the back of a a championship
team granted I wasn't here and there's
been some change through um through the
summer we are still you know
transitioning back to to becoming a you
know a a challenging competitive you
know Premier League team so so that's
that's the challenge we accept we knew
it wasn't going to be easy but do we
back back ourselves to achieve this year
absolutely and and never more so today
than than previously so um you know we
we me and and the staff really enjoy our
work we we really enjoy being at the
club there's so much Goodwill so many
good things that have been going on here
for a number of years now and we're
really proud to be part of it and that's
when you know to kirsty's questions
there there's some uh disappointing
sentiment from the supporters towards me
and and um some other things we have to
own that and use it as a mo motivation
um you know to try and make people happy
and to be proud of the team and be
excited of the team and you know I I
take that responsibility very seriously
so um all of this just puts it into a
category of a brilliant opportunity to
show how good we can be how strong we
are as characters how together we are um
and you know we've got to try and
continue on that path while obviously
getting the results that we that that we
need here the other positive finally
from me the the fact that you have got
so many character and big characters
experienced Personnel in your squad that
the future is going to be
okay well that's the intention and and
that's definitely the belief you know we
we have um um everything in our team in
terms of um experience Premier League
experience we have some really good
young players some exciting players that
some that you were saying regular on the
pitch some that are maybe in and out and
some that hopefully will break through
sooner rather than than later and and
you know we have lots of mini stories as
well within the team of of guys sort of
you know back in the Premier League and
and showing their worth again so so yeah
we have a real good variety of of what
we feel is needed to to achieve this
year and um and uh you know the hope is
that that that'll be enough to to reach
the the objectives and um you know we're
really backing ourselves to to do that
and I repeat what better opportunity to
show it when um you know there there's a
little bit of criticism out there and
challenge and um you know like I said
this is the time to really stand up and
be counted and show how proud We Are to
be how much we want to be here in terms
of um short and sort of midterm
success thanks
mate right Ste um you are five Premier
League games into the season seven with
the cup games as well I wonder over the
next few games and weeks what
improvements you want to see from your
players to get that that object that
first premier league win yeah I think
that first and foremost we're only
taking one one game at a time you know
we we we are working daily in a way um
um that sort of promotes and tries to
improve um the team that that we that we
need to be in in in the Premier League I
think that
um you know the what we really want to
do is put a complete performance
together that gets the result you know I
think there's been times in games where
um we've shown some really good things
I'm repeating myself I've said this like
quite often to you so I don't want to
sound like a broken record but we've
really got to commit to being able to um
be at a real consistent level all the
way through the duration of of a of a
game and we haven't been able to do that
yet you know we we um for example start
really well at at Palace and and for the
large part of the game look like the
dominant team that's going to win and
then we have a spell where you know
through I don't want to go back on it
but like um where you know we're under
the c a little bit and we concede and
then we do the opposite against ever and
where we don't start very well we're
poor let's let's be honest for the first
half but then we look like the more uh
dominant and Progressive team in in in
the second half and managed to get um a
result so we we there's there's no doubt
that for us to improve we've got to be
able to um be at the level all through
through a game because um the Premier
League demands are of you in terms of
getting results so so that's that's
where we are we know what it takes to
play well we know what it look like
tactically technically we're very clear
on how the team plays the players are as
well we train it every day and at times
we've shown at that really well and
other times we haven't and um that's
basically what I'm saying is we've got
to get a consistency in in our style of
play that starts on the first minute and
takes us all the way through to um
because if you don't have a way of
playing then you don't know what it
looks like when it goes wrong but we do
have a way of playing and at times we've
not been able to quite reach the Heights
and and you know we've we've been
punished on it so consistency is the key
into um you know putting a whole
complete performance together that we
believe that when you perform uh with
our way then results will come um and
and that's that that's what we're trying
to do how do you achieve that that
consistency for 90 minutes and I wonder
what the issues that you've seen that
need to be rectified in order to make
that happen yeah well I think first and
foremost you do you know in any game
that you that you play you do get
punished when you when you drop your
levels there's no no doubt about that
you know um so that that's that's like I
said that first and foremost is having
the consistency and the repetition of
what we want to do with the ball what we
want to do without the ball because
we're really clear on players are really
clear on it as well the way I'm asking
the team to play is not not easy you
know it's not easy it's not easy
tactically it's not easy uh technically
but it's it's something that we believe
will give us an opportunity to to be
able when we get it right to to be a
good attacking threat to dominate games
to get the right territory you know
through um the width that we get through
a high fullback through a boxing
Midfield you know and and an exciting
sort of attacking Winger on the opposite
side and the Tactical move moving
patterns that we're working on you know
so I go back to it's it's consistency
it's believing in it it's getting better
at it and and more importantly like
delivering it on Match days you know and
um that's where um that's where our
focus is and we have to believe that
that that will come right you talked
there about how you say that the way
you're asking these players to play is a
is is a challenge and it can be
difficult would would you mind running
through I guess the core principles of
of what you want from the players and
how long have you got and but also you
know the you also talked about high fall
B exciting we the Tactical
implementations for the fans maybe that
that Kirsty already mentioned that that
may be frustrated at the moment with and
maybe struggling to to see what you are
trying to implement yeah well um listen
when it comes off it looks great and
when it doesn't you know they they they
they can always get questioned and they
will do of course when results are not
good good either sometimes you can get
results not playing great and you know
tactics are not even even thought about
but you know we we we you
know I'm going to say could I could sit
it all day and talk about how we how we
want to play and maybe this is not not
the right platform but you know we we we
want to play with a ball if we can you
know we want to play exciting attacking
football we want to create you know
overloads in certain areas of the pitch
to certain games that can that can um
allow us to hit the hot spots in a game
that we feel can hurt the hurt the
opponents and you know like I said
that's with with a number of players
through the middle of the pitch with
Midfield players and and and 10s and
then you know offering width from from
um high fullbacks or or or wide Wingers
you know depending on what team we end
up going with and um you know once we
get through the lines we want to make
sure we got enough players that can
continue to continue the attack and um
you know know um when you get up the
pitch it sometimes becomes a numbers
game that you want to get the right
numbers in the Box for crosses or
running behind and things like that so
yeah listen there's loads of things that
we're working on loads of things we've
set out from the first day preseason
some bits are are are steadily going
well are the bits we we need to make big
strides on there's no doubt about that
but I always knew that was going to be
the case you know um nobody said that
this was going to be easy um it's going
to be a challenging job but it's one
that we're really committing to and
really believe that we're going to
succeed in and um like I said it's it's
getting
through tough spells that that end up
defining who you or what you become and
that's what we want to do Arsenal this
weekend just finally I I wonder because
of of the the the kind of challenge that
this will be and how the season has
planned out so far for you what defined
success this
weekend well the same you know as a
positive result performance are always
the the main objectives of a game but
it's understanding how you would achieve
that you know and uh like I said it's
it's um of course studying the opponent
um it's seeing where we feel we're at in
terms of our game and which players are
really uh performing in the way that we
that we want and then trying to pick the
right team to to fill them pieces in
terms of um you know putting that plan
plan together so that's um the objective
for every game is to win and to play
well and there'll be no different hard
of course really hard the way Arsenal
are at the moment the way they've been
for a couple of years but as I said to
Cur before if we don't believe that we
can go into these games and have success
then you know that that's not the
mentality that's going to help us
achieve um anything this season so you
know that's that's where we need to be
