디아스포라 영화제가 열렸습니다
여러분들
의 이민자와 난민을 비롯해
계급이나 인종 등 다양한 경계를
넘나드는 사람들의 이야기를 나누고자
기획된 영화제입니다
2013년
작은 행사로 시작하여 그간 많은
이들의 공감과 참여로 성장해
인천을 대표하는 문화 행사로
자리잡았죠
고향을 떠나는 사람들의 슬픔과 희망
그리고 하늘과 바다를 통해 들어온
다양한 정체성을 영화를
통해 알려고 있습니다
한국 최초의 이민도시가 인천이었다라는
부분들을 저희가 주목하고 그 부분과
관련된 그런 어떤
영화제들을 저희가 기획을 하게
되었구요 나와 다르다는 이유로 더
이상 뭔가 거리를 둔다던가 이럴
필요가 없다는 생각을 좀 해봅니다

떠나고 들어오는 다양한 디아스포라의
삶이 소개되었습니다
저희가 요번 120주년이라는이
기념일 행사를 계기로 해서
인천 시민들한테 그리고 해외동포들한테
인천이란 도시가
문화의 다양성 포용성 그리고 개방성
이런 도시다 그리고 이민이 떠난
도시고 이제는 해외에 나가 있는
이민들을 다시 품고자 하는
그 옛날
낯선 땅 낯선 환경에서 이룩해온
선조들의 개척 정신은 지금의 우리에게
정신적 뿌리가 되고 있지만
그들의 첫 이사는 가슴 아픈 역사에서
출발했습니다
우리 민족이
자발적으로 이제 다른 나라로 이제
이주한 것은
19세기 중역부터 시작이 됩니다
그때에 이민의 가장 큰 특징은
배고픔에서
벗어나기 위한
즉 가난해서 벗어나기 위해서 두만강을
건너서
연애주로 가게 되고
압록강을 건너서 만주와 간도로
진출하게 됩니다
19세기 후반 조선은 가난과 수탈
연이은 흉년으로
기근이 창궐했고 사람들은
굶주림에서 벗어나기 위해
새로운 터전을 찾아야 했습니다

이윽고 1863년 겨울
자국의 희망을 잃은
함경도 농민들이
목숨을 걸고 강을 건너
지신 허경 유역에 처음으로 정착하게
되죠
그 후
러시아 쪽 연예주 일대엔
30여 개의 한인 마을이 형성될
정도로 대거 2주가 이루어졌습니다

러시아 당국은 그런 한인의 이주를
환영했으며
한국적인이라는 뜻을 담아 카레의
스키라 불렀습니다
중국의
연변조선족 자치구가 형성되는 이제
가장
기초가 되는 것이죠 그리고
중앙아시아닌들이
형성하게 되는 시초도 사실 그때 이제
극동 러시아로 이주한 사람들에서도
비롯되는 거라고 할 수 있고요
이후로도 나라의 사정은 좀처럼
나아지지 않았습니다
구 한 말
타국으로 떠나지는 않았지만 많은
농민들은
생기를 위해 고향을 떠나
서울
인천 평양과 같은 대도시로
이주했습니다
조선은 부패한 정권과
점점 극악해지는 일본의 약탈로도
모자라
열강의 가축장이 되며
몸살을 하락기에
새로운 환로를 찾아야 했죠
그시기 미국 반대편 하와이에선
사탕수수 농장들이 활기를 띠기
시작합니다
농장 주들은 부족한 노동력을
아시아인들로 충당했지만 중국인
배척법과 일본인들의 노동 항구로 인해
길이 막힙니다
이에 농장주들은 조선에서 활동하던
선교사 겸 주안 외교관 알렌에게
한인노동자
파견을 제안하죠
고종 황제는 그 제안을 받아들입니다
1902년에 우리 민족 최초의 공식
이민이 시작이 돼요 그게 바로
하와이로의
노동이민입니다이 역시 가난에서
벗어나기 위한 그런 이민의 하나라고
볼 수가 있죠
우리나라 공식 이민의 첫 출발지였던
인천 계항장

당시 인천은 일찍이 기독교가 전파되어
선교가 활발히 진행되고 있었습니다
유민들은 새로운 사상을 빠르게
수용했고
낯선 세계에서 온 기회를 놓치지
않았죠

당시 내리감리교회의 선교사였던
존스의 적극적인 홍보를 통해
기독교 신자들이 대거 이민에 참여하게
됩니다
이로써 1902년
인천에서 제외한인으로서의
첫 공식 해외이주의 역사가 쓰였습니다
하와이를 젖과
꿀이 흐르는 태평양 낙원이라고 선전을
했습니다 그래서 내리 교회 교인들
가운데서
첫 번째 이민선에
절반 정도가
타게 되었습니다 하와이 이민이나
멕시코 이민이나
인천에서 배가 출발했다는 그런
출발지로서의
장수성의 의미가 있다
1902년 12월 22일은 비나
눈이 오지 않는 영하 4도 정도의
날씨였습니다 이민자
명단에 오른 121명은 제물포항에서
일본의
겐카이 마르호에 올랐고
신체검사에서 탈락한 19명을 제외한
102명은 다시 하와이로 향하는
켈리코의 몸을 실었죠
험난한 여정은
20여 일간 지속되었습니다
거대한 파도가 배에 옆구리를 밀어
젖힐 때마다
험을 크네 수용된 조선인들은 예의와
범서를 입고 살아 엉켜버렸다
배에 멀미와 희망의 울렁임을 싣고
태평양을 건넌 이들은
드디어 이듬해 1월 13일
낯선 땅 호놀룰루 항해 첫발을
뒤졌습니다
한세기 전 말 한마디 통하지 않는
먼 땅으로 건너가
생존을 위해 몸부림쳤던 이민
1세대들의 애환
이곳 박물관에는 이민의 출발지였던
계양 당시의 인천과
첫 공식 이민이 이루어지기까지의
상황들을
고스란히 간직하고 있습니다
대한제국은 수민원을 세워
이민자들의 여권을 발급하는 등
적극적으로 이민을 준비했죠 이민사
박물관을 중심으로 해서 저희가 이민의
역사 그리고 또 해외에 있는
대한인들을 대한 상설 전시를 늘 하고
있고
매년 기획전시라고 해서 뭐 남미
가계신 한인 분들을 위한 전시 그리고
특별히 작년에는 저희가 제동포
재단이랑 협약을 해서
이민사와 관련된 전세계 흩어진
역사들을 저희가 모으는 작업을
조사하고
연구하고 그거에 대한 가치 평가를
하고 나중에 보존하고 전시하는 다양한
사업들을
하고 있습니다
그렇게 무지개를 꿈꾸며 하와이에 몸을
던진 수많은 청춘가 부모의 품에 안겨
고향을 떠난 꽃다운 아이들
하지만
푸른 바다의 그곳이
사탕수수의 잎처럼
날카로움을 숨기고 있을지 그들은 미처
알지 못했습니다

기대가 있었기에 사람들이 선뜻 그 먼
태평양을 건너가는 한국이
뱃길에 몸을 실을 수 있었던 것
같습니다
120년 전 그들의 여정을 따라가
보기로 했습니다
코발트빛 바다와 부서지는 파도 하늘에
닿을 듯서 있는
키다리 야자수
하와이의 상징이라고 하는 와이키키
해변을 떠올리는 수식어입니다
오늘날 하와이는 여유와 평화를
상징하는
지상낙원이지만이 낯선 땅에
닻을 내렸던
첫 이민자들 앞엔
과연 어떤 길이 펼쳐졌을까요
그들의 발자취를 따라
y알로아로 향했습니다
해외 이미 초기에 120년 전에
오셔서 첫 번째에 있었던 사탕수수
농장인데
사탕수수 공장입니다
도심에서 차로 약 1시간
사람들의 발길이 오래전에 끊긴 듯
풀만 무성한 이곳은
원래 사탕수수 농장이 있던 자리입니다
하니님인 자들이 배치된 첫 일터였죠
지금은 다른 용도로 쓰이고 있지만
사탕수수를 설탕으로 가공하던 공장터도
남아 있습니다
뜨거운 햇볕 아래
억센 수수대를 잘라내며 이민
노동자로서의 삶을 시작한 한인들
그들은
새벽 기상 사이렌으로 하루 일과를
시작했습니다
점심식사를 하는 30분을 제외하곤
하루 10시간씩 중노동을 했죠
이름 대신 번호로 불리며
십장이 감시를 받았던 노동자들은
마음 놓고 허리 한번 찰 수도
없었습니다
농장의 월급이
한 16불에서 시작을 했는데 16불
하고 조금 기술자들은 20불을 받고
있었는데
그러니까 이제 우리 노동자들이
규칙 생활을 해야 됐고 땡볕에서
하는데 10장은 말을 타고 감시를
하고 나니까 아주 심적으로 어려운
생활을 하셨던 거죠
강의는 생명력으로 뿌리를 내린
한인들의 마지막 흔적을 찾아가
봤습니다
먼 곳을 극히 바라보는 모습에서
조국에 대한 그리움이 느껴지는
듯합니다 이게 너무나 울컥
이민 100주년 기념 추모비가 세워진
이곳은
푸의 기묘원
한국과 일본 중국 등에서 건너온
초기 이민 노동자들과 그들의 가족이
잠들어 있는 곳이죠
모든 것이 낯선 이국땅에서
악착같이 버텼던 그들의 꿈은
이제 소박한 비석으로 남아 기억되고
있습니다
역사의 뒤편으로 사라져가는 1세대
한인들의 발자취를 따라 나선 여정
그들의 삶을 좀 더 깊이 들여다볼 수
있는
플랜테이션 빌리지입니다
사탕수수 농장에서 일했던
8개 소수민족 이민자들의 생활상을
재현해 놓은 일종의
민속촌 같은 곳이죠 가옥은
어떤 모습일까요
서양이 구조대로 집 현관에 들어서면
작은 거실이 있고
방 두 개와 부엌이 배치돼 있습니다

초창기 이민자들이 살았던 집은 거의
문막에 가까운 형태였지만
형편이 조금 나아지면서 그들이
지냈던 보금자리 또한 개선되어
갔습니다

힘들고 외로웠지만
악착같이 버틴 한인 이민자들의 땀과
눈물은
외로운 섬처럼 척박했던 터전에 조그만
싹을 피워내기 시작했습니다
조선인들은 어려움을 딛고 하와이에
정착해갔습니다

적은 액수나마 고양이 가족에게
보내기도 하고
약간의 재산을 모으기도 했죠
생활이 나아지자 미혼의 남성들은
가정을 꾸리고픈 바람이 생겼습니다
현지에서
타국인과 결혼하는 것은 거의
불가능했기 때문에
고국에서 신부를 데리고 올 수밖에
없었죠

조선의 여성들과 사진 한 장을
주고받는 것으로 이루어진
혼인이 여성들을 일컬어 사진 신부라
불렀습니다
이 사진 신부인데
양쪽에 사진을 교환
했을 수도 있지만
신부들은 되게 10대 후반 20대
초반이고

신랑은 되게 40대 사진 신부가
하와이 신랑
후보에게 보낸 사진 1913년
실제로는 이분 나이는 훨씬 많을
겁니다
젊을 때 사진
딱 보냈으니까
그리고
어떤 경우에는이 사람이 도착하잖아요
그 사진의 남자가 도착하는게 아니야
친구 사진을
하와이에 온 사진 신부는
약 600에서 1000명 정도였을
것으로 추정하고 있습니다
이 여성들은 하와이가 지상낙원이라는
말에 솔깃해 배를 탔지만
현실을 마주하고도
고국으로 돌아갈 형편이 되지 않아
혼인을 할 수밖에 없었죠
그렇게 사진 신부들은 남편과 함께
낮에는 사탕수수 농장에서
밤에는
삭바느질을 하며 자식들을 길러
나갔습니다
1910년부터 하와이의 사진 신부가
도착하게 되면서 이제 하와이 한인
사회에는
체류라고 하는 개념에서 정주라고 하는
개념으로 전환되게 됩니다 하와이에
도착한이 사진 신부들은 이제
한인서의 가장
기초 단위인 가정을 형성하게 되는
거예요 그녀들은 강했습니다
부단한 노력으로 한인 학교와 교회를
발전시키고
독립운동에도 남성 못지않게 기여했죠
사진 신부까지 더해져 미국 전역에서
기반을 다진 이민 1세대들은 한민족의
정체성을 유지하면서
후손들이 미국 사회에 진출할 수 있는
토대를 닦았습니다
그들은 그렇게
아름다운 풍경 속에서
차별과 노동을 이겨내며
점차 제2의 고향을 만들어 갔습니다
영미권의 한국학 최고 권위자인
에드워드 쇼추 교수를 통해 그들의
이야기를 좀 더 들어보기로 했습니다

코치로 활동했던 아버지를 뒤따라 선수
생활을 했습니다
그 후에도 세계 복싱 평의에 WBC
국제심판을 거쳐 25년간 회장을
역임한
복싱계에 유명인사죠
경상북도 경주가 고향이었다던 그의
외조부는
기근으로부터 벗어나기 위해 하와이행을
택한 이민 1세대 첫 주자였습니다
그의 외조부는 성실하고 책임감 있는
일꾼이었다고 합니다
그리고 그곳에서 한 여인과 가정을
꾸렸죠
그의 외할머니는 사진 교환을 통해
중매 결혼을 한 사진 신부였는데
사진과
다른 남편을 보고
참 많이 울었다고 합니다
이방인의 신분이었지만 그의 할아버지와
아버지는 조국에 대한 자긍심을 잊지

차곡차곡
