🙏 Introduction to Psalm 42 and Beginning of Book 2

The speaker introduces Psalm 42 and explains that it marks the beginning of Book 2 of the Psalms. The divisions of Psalms are ancient, older than the oldest Old Testament manuscripts. The speaker emphasizes the importance of understanding these divisions and begins with a prayer asking for God’s wisdom and grace during their study. Psalm 42 is attributed to the sons of Korah and expresses a deep spiritual longing, symbolized by the imagery of a deer panting for water, reflecting the psalmist’s soul yearning for God.

🏞️ Longing for Worship and Reflection on Separation

The psalmist describes his anguish over being separated from communal worship. He reminisces about leading processions to the house of God with joy and celebration. The speaker explains that in the Old Testament, geographical location was crucial for worship, unlike today where worship can happen anywhere. The psalmist feels the pain of being distant from Mount Zion, the central place of worship, and longs to be reunited with fellow believers.

10:02

🏛️ Shift from Physical to Spiritual Worship

The speaker contrasts Old Testament worship, centered around the Ark of the Covenant in Jerusalem, with New Testament worship, where believers are the temple of the Holy Spirit. Jesus’ conversation with the Samaritan woman at the well is highlighted, emphasizing the transition to worship in spirit and truth, regardless of location. The speaker notes that believers today feel connected through Christ, even when worshipping with strangers, unlike the geographically-bound worship of ancient Israel.

15:03

🌊 Overwhelmed by Waves of Trouble and Taunting

The psalmist feels overwhelmed by waves of trouble, comparing his struggles to being engulfed by roaring waterfalls. The imagery portrays a sense of helplessness, as the psalmist feels distant from God and taunted by his adversaries, who ask, 'Where is your God?' The speaker reflects on how suffering often leads to questions about God’s presence and love, especially from unbelievers. Despite knowing where his God is, the psalmist grapples with feelings of abandonment and relentless hardship.

⚡ The Power of Waves and Ongoing Trouble

The speaker uses a personal anecdote about encountering powerful ocean waves to illustrate the psalmist’s experience of being overwhelmed by constant troubles. Just as ocean waves can catch someone off guard, the psalmist feels as though trouble comes in continuous waves, making it hard to regain footing. The speaker empathizes with the feeling of being battered by one difficulty after another, likening it to being tumbled in the surf, losing all sense of direction and stability.

💔 Emotional Turmoil and Cry for Deliverance

The psalmist acknowledges the deep emotional toll of his trials, admitting to feeling abandoned by God. He repeatedly questions why his soul is downcast, struggling with depression and despair. Despite these dark feelings, the psalmist encourages himself to hope in God and anticipates future praise, clinging to his faith that God will deliver him. The speaker highlights the importance of speaking faith over one’s own soul, even when struggling with emotional or spiritual darkness.

🕊️ Encouraging Hope and Trust in God's Deliverance

The psalmist challenges his soul to trust in God, despite overwhelming despair. He expresses a faith-filled expectation that he will once again praise God, declaring God as his salvation. The speaker encourages believers to adopt this same attitude, exhorting one another to expect God’s deliverance, even in the darkest moments. Psalm chapter 42 and I want to remind

play00:02

you of something and I'll put this up on

play00:04

the screen for you this is the five

play00:06

divisions of the Psalms which I've been

play00:09

showing you last week we finished Psalm

play00:15

chapter 41 which is was the end of book

play00:18

1 and that now we begin book 2 you know

play00:22

we're not exactly sure when these

play00:24

divisions were made in the Psalms but

play00:27

they are old they're older than our

play00:30

oldest Old Testament manuscripts

play00:32

actually and so in other words we find

play00:36

those book divisions in them and and so

play00:39

anyway we're beginning this this the

play00:42

second division which covers the 42nd

play00:46

through the 72nd Psalm and let us begin

play00:52

with prayer Heavenly Father as we dig

play00:55

into your word tonight we'll allow the

play00:59

ministry of your Holy Spirit to move

play01:02

mightily among us we give you this time

play01:05

and we ask you to fill it with your

play01:08

presence your wisdom and insight and we

play01:12

ask Lord that your grace would cover our

play01:14

hearts to be able to receive and apply

play01:16

in Jesus name Amen

play01:20

psalm 42 was written by the sons of

play01:23

korah we're gonna read through it and

play01:24

you're gonna see why we did one of the

play01:26

songs that we did tonight verse one as a

play01:29

deer pants for flowing streams so pants

play01:33

my soul for you O God my soul thirsts

play01:38

for God for the Living God when shall I

play01:41

come and appear before God my tears have

play01:44

been my food day and night while they

play01:47

say to me all the day long

play01:48

where is your God these things I

play01:51

remember as I pour out my soul how I

play01:53

would go with the throng and lead them

play01:56

in procession to the house of God with

play01:59

glad shouts and songs of praise a

play02:03

multitude keeping festival why are you

play02:06

cast down O my soul and why are you in

play02:09

turmoil within me hope in God for I

play02:13

shall again

play02:13

my salvation and my God my soul is cast

play02:18

down within me therefore I remember you

play02:20

from the land of Jordan and from Hermon

play02:23

from Mount Mazar deep calls to deep at

play02:27

the roar of your waterfalls all your

play02:30

breakers and your waves have gone over

play02:33

me by day the Lord commands his

play02:35

steadfast love and at night his song is

play02:38

with me a prayer to the god of my life I

play02:41

say to God my rock why have you

play02:44

forgotten me why do I go mourning

play02:46

because of the oppression of the enemy

play02:48

as with a deadly wound in my bones my

play02:52

adversaries taunt me while they say to

play02:55

me all the day long where is your God

play02:59

why are you cast down O my soul and why

play03:02

are you in turmoil within me hope in God

play03:05

for I shall again praise him my

play03:08

salvation and my god well this is an

play03:11

interesting Psalm Psalm chapter 42 is

play03:13

the psalm or I should say a cry in this

play03:17

Psalm of a man who has been separated

play03:19

from his fellow believers and from the

play03:23

communal worship of God it would be kind

play03:26

of like if you and I were cut off from

play03:30

the body of Christ maybe living in a

play03:33

place where there were no other

play03:34

believers or or or maybe on a bed of

play03:38

sickness where we couldn't gather

play03:39

together with believers in the Lord and

play03:43

we learned from verse 6 here that the

play03:47

psalmist is seems to be located in the

play03:50

northernmost region of Israel at that

play03:52

time in and around Galilee and Mount

play03:55

Hermon but his heart longs to be on

play03:59

Mount Zion and in Jerusalem where

play04:01

worship is is going on in fact you'll

play04:04

look again with me in verse 4 if you

play04:06

would please and he says these things I

play04:08

remember as I pour out my soul how I

play04:11

would go with the throng and lead them

play04:13

in procession to the house of God with

play04:15

glad shouts and songs of praise and a

play04:18

multitude keeping festival so he's

play04:21

thinking back on his time spent with

play04:23

other believers who

play04:25

together with this man worship the Lord

play04:29

together in Israel and he's longing to

play04:32

be back with them now you and I are

play04:34

gonna look at this differently and the

play04:37

reason we're gonna look at this

play04:38

differently and we might even read these

play04:40

words and kind of go what's the big deal

play04:42

I mean where are you happen to be

play04:44

located well you got to remember back in

play04:45

the Old Testament location was an

play04:48

absolutely enormous matter where you

play04:51

were located where you went to worship

play04:53

where you gathered with God's people

play04:56

that was everything and and and we know

play04:59

that that the worship of Israel was

play05:01

always centered around the Ark of the

play05:02

Covenant and that was either in the

play05:04

tabernacle or the temple and for most of

play05:08

its time it was in the city of Jerusalem

play05:11

which was considered to be the chosen

play05:12

city where God's people came and

play05:16

collectively worshiped the Lord well

play05:20

that's not something that you and I

play05:21

think about a whole lot we don't think

play05:24

about location we don't think about

play05:25

going somewhere necessarily to worship

play05:29

because we can we can worship where ever

play05:31

you know believers get welled we can

play05:33

worship alone but we can but wherever

play05:35

believers come together we are together

play05:37

with the body of Christ doesn't matter

play05:39

really if we even know them personally I

play05:43

don't know if you've ever been traveling

play05:44

and stopped during your travels at a

play05:47

church maybe you just kind of just went

play05:48

through the yellow pages or Google to

play05:50

church or something and thought well

play05:52

we're gonna pick this one and we're

play05:53

gonna go to this church here today and

play05:54

you walked into a church and completely

play05:57

unknown to everybody there and yet you

play05:59

felt a sense of connectedness to those

play06:02

people because you had something in

play06:04

common and that was Jesus but there's

play06:06

something else going on different in the

play06:08

New Testament sort of an idea the Bible

play06:10

says that we are the temple of the Holy

play06:13

Spirit

play06:14

whereas there used to be a temple that

play06:16

existed in Jerusalem and there was the

play06:19

Ark of the Covenant and there went on

play06:20

the worship and administration's of the

play06:22

priests and so on and so forth today

play06:24

it's quite different isn't it you and I

play06:27

are a a temple individually of the Holy

play06:30

Spirit and so worship goes on wherever

play06:33

two or more are gathered the Lord has

play06:34

promised his presence in a dynamic way

play06:37

and

play06:38

and and worship happens in it and it

play06:40

overflows and it's a it's a beautiful

play06:42

thing but it was a very different sort

play06:44

of a thing in in the Old Testament days

play06:49

but Jesus actually interestingly enough

play06:52

talked about the fact that worship would

play06:56

be kind of decentralized if you will do

play07:00

you remember his conversation with the

play07:03

woman at the well in Samaria and as soon

play07:06

as Jesus began to speak to this woman in

play07:09

such a way as for her to recognize that

play07:12

he was someone special she perceived him

play07:15

to be a prophet she immediately began to

play07:17

talk to him about one of the age-old

play07:19

arguments between Jews and Samaritans

play07:22

and that was where to worship let me put

play07:25

it on the screen so you can be reminded

play07:28

of it it's from John chapter forty forty

play07:32

John chapter four doesn't go up to 40

play07:34

and and verse 20 and she says here our

play07:39

fathers worshiped on this mountain but

play07:42

you say that in Jerusalem is the place

play07:44

where people ought to worship jesus said

play07:47

to her woman believe me the hour is

play07:49

coming when neither on this mountain nor

play07:51

in Jerusalem will you worship the father

play07:55

the hour is coming and is now here when

play07:57

the true worshipers will worship the

play08:00

father in spirit and truth right for the

play08:06

father is seeking such people to worship

play08:09

Him so today our connection with God's

play08:12

people is on a spiritual level but in

play08:14

the Old Testament it was on a

play08:17

geographical level they came together in

play08:20

that way and it is quite apparent

play08:22

through this psalm that this individual

play08:27

is going through some kind of painful

play08:28

trials that is keeping this individual

play08:31

from being connected with the rest of

play08:33

God's worshiping community and it's so

play08:36

painful that some people are even asking

play08:38

him where is your God I don't know if

play08:41

you've ever had that question posed to

play08:43

you by an unbeliever who was watching

play08:49

your suffering

play08:51

you know pain and difficulty have always

play08:55

produced a challenging environment for

play08:59

people to embrace and put their faith in

play09:01

God because pain causes us to wonder if

play09:05

God is who he says he is and he's a God

play09:09

of love who is also all-powerful why is

play09:11

there so much pain and why is there so

play09:15

much suffering in this world and so that

play09:21

sometimes causes people to challenge us

play09:24

with the question so where is your God

play09:26

in the midst of all of this and that can

play09:30

be a very difficult thing because when

play09:31

you're going through a difficult season

play09:33

and someone is challenging you about the

play09:36

presence of God related to that I mean

play09:38

you're probably already dealing with

play09:40

your own issues and temptations and

play09:42

challenges about you know where is God

play09:44

even the psalmist would cry out and say

play09:46

Lord you know why have you abandoned me

play09:49

why have you kind of let me go sort of

play09:52

and you'll kind of see that here in fact

play09:57

the psalmist repeats the same haunting

play09:59

question in verse 10 look with me again

play10:01

in your Bible he says as with a deadly

play10:05

wound in my bones my adversaries taught

play10:08

me now they're actually taunting him

play10:09

with the question where is your God well

play10:14

the psalmist knows where his God is but

play10:17

even so even though he knows where his

play10:22

God is he admits to some pretty dark

play10:25

feelings related to the things that he's

play10:27

going through look at verse 7 verse 7 is

play10:30

highly poetic but he says deep calls to

play10:34

deep at the roar of your waterfalls all

play10:37

your breakers and your waves have gone

play10:40

over me now that's an interesting sort

play10:43

of a poetic way of saying I'm in over my

play10:47

head I'm drowning in the in the sea of

play10:50

my trouble and it's like the the waves

play10:52

are just continuing to crash against my

play10:56

life and bring pain and difficulty I

play10:59

don't know if you have you played in the

play11:01

in the the waves of the ocean before

play11:03

there there

play11:04

force to be reckoned with you have to be

play11:07

very careful when you go to the ocean

play11:08

for the very first time you need to is

play11:11

only helpful if someone's there to

play11:13

school you a little bit on the power of

play11:15

the waves because the very first time

play11:17

Sue and I ever I don't know if it was

play11:19

your first time it was my first time

play11:21

seeing the ocean when we went to the

play11:22

Atlantic Ocean actually and my uncle and

play11:26

aunt we were very young we were in our

play11:28

early 20s in fact I'm not even sure you

play11:31

were even 20 yet but because we got

play11:34

married very young but I was 4 she was 2

play11:37

he's kidding but but my uncle took us

play11:42

out to the ocean and and he was telling

play11:46

us you know how to be careful and the

play11:48

very first thing we came upon was an

play11:51

ambulance out at the on the beach a girl

play11:53

had been picked up by a wave and slammed

play11:56

down on the beach and dislocated her hip

play11:58

and it was a very painful sort of a

play12:00

situation but that was good but it was

play12:02

kind of good for us I hey I'm sorry to

play12:03

you know prosper over her pain but it

play12:06

allowed us to kind of have a healthy

play12:08

fear of the water and so I learned that

play12:12

when you're out wading in those waves

play12:15

you've got to either jump up and follow

play12:18

the the breaker you know and let it kind

play12:21

of take you back or you have to dive

play12:23

under it and let it roll over you

play12:26

otherwise you get caught in it and to be

play12:29

caught in a breaker it's a very

play12:31

frightening experience because it'll

play12:34

just take you to the shore head over

play12:36

heels and drop you there and and you're

play12:40

a sandy mess you know basically after

play12:43

it's through with you and this is kind

play12:45

of what I think about I think about that

play12:46

and it happened to me a few times I I

play12:48

dove successfully under several breakers

play12:51

and then I got I didn't dive deep enough

play12:52

one time and I got caught in it and

play12:55

suddenly I just felt myself literally

play12:57

tumbling over and over lost my sense of

play12:59

up and down and and it just deposited me

play13:02

on the the shore kind of spitting and

play13:04

sputtering and and I remember thinking

play13:07

about that as as the psalmist is

play13:10

speaking here about all of your breakers

play13:14

and your waves have just rolled over me

play13:17

and I'm just

play13:17

I'm helpless I'm just helpless have you

play13:21

ever been in a situation where it feels

play13:23

like trouble comes in waves not just one

play13:28

wave but many waves like ongoing waves

play13:33

and is and you you've barely gotten

play13:37

yourself put back together from the last

play13:39

wave and you get hit with another one

play13:41

and and then you're sputtering and

play13:43

stammering and disoriented and another

play13:46

wave hits you and I'm talking about

play13:48

waves of trouble waves of difficulty

play13:51

this is what the psalmist is talking

play13:53

about deep calls to deep almost as if

play13:56

the waves are speaking to one another

play13:58

and and collaborating to come and make

play14:02

my life miserable one after the other so

play14:06

he's basically saying my troubles have

play14:10

hit me repeatedly and I'm in over my

play14:14

head and I've lost my footing I'm not

play14:18

sure which end is even up anymore he

play14:22

also admits to feeling abandoned look at

play14:24

verse 9 I say to God my rock why have

play14:31

you forgotten me and all these things

play14:35

together the relentless pursuit of

play14:37

trouble hitting time after time after

play14:40

time and the feelings of abandonment and

play14:43

being forgotten by the Lord and come

play14:46

together and cause any one and it

play14:48

certainly does this individual to fall

play14:50

into an emotional depression look at

play14:54

verse 11 why are you cast down O my soul

play14:59

and why are you in turmoil within me

play15:03

you'll remember earlier in the Psalms

play15:05

that this was the same approach that

play15:07

David took and that was speaking to his

play15:11

soul at a time of great difficulty and

play15:14

depression and you have to remember to

play15:17

the human soul is made up of your

play15:19

emotions your will and your intellect

play15:22

and now he realizes how depressed he is

play15:27

and so he challenges his soul saying why

play15:31

you downcast and then he exhorts his

play15:34

soul saying hope in God or put your

play15:37

trust in God and notice the statement of

play15:40

faith that follows that I shall again

play15:43

praise him my salvation and my god it's

play15:49

interesting isn't it how the psalmist

play15:50

encourages his own heart speaks to his

play15:54

heart why are you so bummed out

play15:57

why are you so depressed why are you so

play16:00

down you know put your hope in God put

play16:06

your hope in him and then that that word

play16:09

of faith I will yet praise the Lord

play16:13

that's difficult to do when you're in a

play16:15

deep dark depression isn't it I mean to

play16:18

speak to your soul and to have anything

play16:21

good to say you know because you know I

play16:24

don't know about you but when I'm

play16:25

feeling low and I don't struggle with

play16:27

depression but like anybody else I think

play16:29

I probably have my dips and and then

play16:32

that sort of thing but it's like when I

play16:34

when I've gotten that way it's like all

play16:37

of life is bad like you're you're

play16:40

looking at life through cloudy lenses

play16:44

and there's nothing that's good

play16:46

nothing's good and and and you might be

play16:48

looking at things that are even

play16:50

unaffected by your troubles but they're

play16:52

not good anymore nothing's good because

play16:55

of your depression and when nothing is

play16:58

good or at least you see nothing that is

play17:00

good it's very challenging to say

play17:03

anything positive let alone speak to

play17:08

your own soul trust in the Lord I will

play17:12

yet praise Him my salvation and my God

play17:18

and I and I love the fact that the

play17:21

psalmist tells his heart his soul to

play17:25

expect the Lord to bring him through

play17:28

this time what some now we should be

play17:34

saying that to each other at the very

play17:35

least right that's what you and I should

play17:39

be saying to somebody who is drowning in

play17:43

depression

play17:45

we should say listen I want you to

play17:48

expect the Lord to bring you through

play17:49

this time I want you to have an

play17:52

expectation of God's deliverance and

play17:54

goodness I know you can't see it right

play17:57

now I know that everything you look at

play18:00

right now is ugly and and grim but

play18:05

expect the Lord's goodness here's the

play18:08

question

play18:08

the psalmist is saying that to his soul

play18:11

expect the Lord's deliverance here's a

play18:14

question I have for you do you and I

play18:15

have any reason to do that I encourage

play18:18

you just now to say that to someone

play18:21

who's going through depression but do

play18:23

you have a biblical leg to stand on in

play18:26

other words is there a promise in God's

play18:29

Word on which you can stand related to

play18:32

that exhortation there is and you know

play18:34

it it's in Romans chapter eight verse 28

play18:37

let me put it on the screen for you and

play18:39

we know I love the force of that that

play18:46

for those who love God all things work

play18:50

together for good for those who are

play18:53

called according to his purpose and that

play18:55

is why you and I can have an expectation

play18:57

and then why we can encourage others to

play19:00

have an expectation of the goodness of

play19:03

the Lord because there's a promise in

play19:05

God's Word that you and I can stand on

play19:07

and we need to stand on it especially

play19:10

during those times when the breakers the

play19:14

problems the troubles are hitting us one

play19:17

after the other

play19:27

you
